cable connection keeps going to dialup

I've called twice and they had me change internet options. We deleted all MSN connections, unchecked all dialup instructions and set up LAN connection. But MSN default and dial checks keep coming back. Plus keep getting mssg. I can't access things because I'm working offline. When I click connect it dials my dialup connection.

Time Warner Road Runner (cable co.) said if this continues I should contact Microsoft because its an IE problem. MS is closed tonight but thought I'd get better help here anyway instead of just an answer to get me off the phone.

Any ideas whats going on? I'm paying for broadband and typing this on a really slow connection. TIA, Sandy

download Firefox it is a better browers

install it --then click on the icon to get online

then i will tell u how to stop the other connection

Have you gone into Control Panel, Network Connections and deleted the dial up connection? The browser you use may be MSN branded, which could be defaulting you to dial up. Have you uninstalled your old dial up connection software?

Yep - FiOS is fiber optic. We switched both our computer and the TV over to Verizon a few months ago and it has been fantastic. IT is cheaper than cable for better service and even more TV options. My only complaint with Verizon is they dug up a few of my mailbox hostas a couple of years ago (in Feb) and buried them about a foot underground when they were laying the fiber optic line. Fortunately, I got over it and just replaced (except for the one I found growing upside down, trying to find "up" a foot deep in dirt) which I replanted. Dahlia - I use satellite internet (WildBlue - through Dish Network) and it is OK. It was my only option other than dialup. Kids needed a faster connection due to online classes, so I upgraded to the mid level WildBlue package. Be prepared for a large up front fee (I went with WildBlue because it didn't have that large fee and free activation at the time - I am not sure about now) All satellite internet providers have a usage cap. It is called FAP or Fair Access Policy. It limits how much data you can upload or download. Hughes has a daily cap. WildBlue has a rolling 30 day cap. Once you hit your cap, the speed gets throttled back to basically dialup speed or lower. If it is just you and you are not a heavy user - you will never notice. You will NOT be able to stream video (Netflix, etc.) and you will not be able to do a lot of YouTube watching, etc. - but some. It is noticeably better than dialup - but it is 3X the cost for me. You will probably have to commit to a 2 year contract also. Make sure you know up front what you are getting.

I have no opinion on McAfee having never used it. Read plenty of downside comments of course. Regarding anti virus I use AntiVir and Avast, one on each of my 2 main machines. I had been an AVG fan for years till version 8 appeared, it is still on one computer and running with no problems but removed from the other 2. On the firewall Zonealarm has been around forever providing a good free service. Recently I moved away as I had conflicts that I felt were induced by Zonealarm and now use PC Tools Firewall Plus, a free program. Anti malware, I use the 3 you mention plus Threatfire on one machine as it was offered bundled with the PC Tools firewall. I use one or 2 of these these every couple of weeks being sure to update the definitions before I run a scan. I have no particular preference. Spywareblaster runs in the background of course and only needs updating.

Katy, Sure hope you enjoy that new Wireless Keyboard/Mouse. What Brand did you buy? I've always liked the Logitech Line the best. I started with the original Logitech 3 Button Wireless Mouse (still have it). My first Wireless Keyboard (not sure of the brand name) was Infrared and it was horrible, had to have it pointing towards the receiver at all times. I have the MX5500 Combo hooked up to my Desktop Computer right now, best Logitech has ever made (it's Bluetooth and has a great range)(very pricey, think it cost me around $170)! Once you've tried Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Combos you'll never go back! BTW, Windows 10 Updates are nothing to worry about. They've been coming for many, many years and will continue to come. I've had a couple minor problems, but really nothing to get excited about. I have Windows 10 on 5 Laptops, 1 Desktop and 1 Tablet, all running great! It's good that Microsoft is staying on top of any problems! When there are just so many different varieties of computers out there with so many different components, you really just have to wonder how they don't have more problems then they do? You've really got to give them credit! Since you're going to Buy a New All-In-One Desktop, I'd just go ahead and get it with Windows 10 Preinstalled! I'm sure there won't be any problems with a New Computer w/Windows 10. Most of the problems are with Older Computers that are being Upgraded to Windows 10 and the older software that's already installed.

See if you have any dial-up definitions
Uncheck the "Always dial my default connection".

I might look at add/remove and in windows components add/remove, untick 'MSN'

Then I might look at IE tools/internet options and click the 'connections tab, and tick never dial a connection - then in the same window, press the Network button, and untick all of those boxes.

So far, the only two suggestions I haven't already done (twice!) is remove MSN from add remove and uninstalled old dialup software.

Will give add/remove a try. Still using free MSN hotmail, though. Will that still work?

If that doesn't work I'll need more info on how to uninstall old dialup software. Thanks, Sandy

I have msn hotmail & msn messenger and dont use the MSN Explorer. Don't have it installed. Tried it once just to see what it was.

Thanks, Mikie. It worked! After reading your reply I was confident enough to remove all traces of MSN, MSN messenger, and MSN search. (I was afraid of losing a lot of stored email folders in html.)
