I need TV remote help....any techies out there?

I'm kind of getting at my wit's end here: my tv remote broke while I was watching a DVD and now I can't get back to the tv connection to try to program a new Universal remote. Is there anyone here who can talk me through getting my tv back on? I know it sounds stupid, but I don't know what else to do and at the moment I don't have anyone around who is able to help.

Your TV "should" have a button somewhere on it that says TV/Video, as should your DVD player. If you push that it should get you back to your TV. It may take a couple of tries, since most TV's now allow AUX, DVD, VCR, TV.

See if that works

...or more likely I think these days an "input" button. Look right on your TV for this and push it until something comes on. Make sure your cable or satellite box is on.

Don't know what buttons you'd want to keep and which to dispense with. In any event, I doubt you'll find exactly what you want anywhere. Something I've had some luck with at our house with elderly mom with macular degeneration and some dementia. Have a big TV universal remote purchased at Radio Shack. Using card stock and tape, I've blocked out all of the buttons except the ones she knows how to use. For us, that's on/off, volume up/down, and mute. Takes a little skill in construction of the cover because you have to put solid spacers under the surface of the cardboard to prevent pressure from unintentionally triggering a button beneath the cardboard's surface. Otherwise all materials are cheap and principals simple as can be.

It would be a cool device. You've had me thinking on it since I read your post. It's actually quite doable if the broadcaster would feel building the query database would be profitable. That's the kind of forward thinking that makes people rich!!!The possibilities are endless if it were implemented. One of my digital to analog converters has a pause on it when even on a live broadcast, you could pause the picture. If the tv is connected to the internet then you could use your pointer, type in "persons name" or "mountain name" or point to a food dish and query "recipe". I know a lot of folks have the newer tv's that wirelessly log onto the internet. Mine has a small keyboard that slides out from under the remote. It comes in handy when doing searches on netflix or, looking at ebay, facebook, etc. real quick right from the tv. It could surely work off that same principle and evolve over time into something even more powerful....good thinking on your part!!!

We figured it out via service web page. Thanks! I'm not sure if this is the optimal place to ask this question, but here goes. I want to set up a TV to work with a pay service so that Ican use the cable or pay services remote (in addition to the TV remote) to change the volume. I know this can be done, even though some people still rely on their TV's remote to alter the volume. The TV's user guide only partially instructs on this -- telling me that I can use my pay service remote buy just "entering" the code. Lovely; but it does not explain where this 4-digit code is to be entered. I have tried a few combinations and menus without success. I'll include photos of the TV user guide and remote. BTW, the pay-TV remote works fine for HDMI channel changes, etc., but I need to figure out how to use its VOLUME control. I know it's simple. The installation tech did this for one of our TVs. WiFi outlets are pretty handy, and at a good price point. I think you are even smarter, though, for thinking of alternating your side of the bed. As a creature of habit, that would never occur to me. Smart irrigation timers are great. Our yard is on an incline. In order to water the top long enough, the irrigation has to run so long that water runs down the street on the bottom side of the incline. The smart timer is smart enough to know that it needs to run for, say, 5 minutes, then stop for 2 minutes to let the water absorb, then run for 5 more minutes. No more run-off. I really like it.

'Fraid not to both your suggestions. I tried the Universal remote setup again both on TV and VCR and it did not work. So now I have ordered a new remote specific to this 2000 model TV - for $34 cheaper than a brand new TV. I have cable with no box and no satellite. This older TV works just great, but not when the remote is broken.

Sorry our advice didn't work but why spend $34 less on a remote than on a brand new TV? I don't want to spend your money for you, but, many new "budget" HDTVs will give you a heck of lot better picture than what you're likely accustomed to with your 10-year-old TV, not to mention be compatible with what's becoming standard def programming, and coupled with the fact that your 10-year-old TV is well into its life expectancy anyway.

Truth be told, aside from size my amateur eyes don't see a whole lot of difference in quality between my highly rated $1900 50 inch and my "best value" $300 30 inch.

I'd cancel that order. JMHO.

I agree with you FOAS, it's just not the time for me to buy a newer model TV. Maybe next year. I've already done some research on a new LG 32" LCD tv. If for some reason the new remote doesn't work, I'll be back to researching new TVs again.

Don't know if this will work for you or not...

I have a new $900, HDTV LCD TV and 6 times out of 10 hubby hits something on his Universal remote that messes up the TV and both remotes... The first time it happened it took me all night to get the TV back... I ended up unplugging everything from the electrical outlet, disconnecting the DVD player and VCR, took the batteries out of his remote then just plugged in the TV... It worked fine with my remote, the one that came with the TV... I reconnected the DVD player and that worked fine with my remote... I then reprogram his remote for the TV only and everything worked fine... A few weeks later he pressed the wrong thing again, his remote was blinking and wasn't working and the only thing on mine that worked was the On/Off button...

To shorten an even longer story... When it happens now I shut off the TV using the button on the TV, press the TV button on his remote then turn the TV on with either remote... Things work fine until he does it again... lol

You may also want to clean the... um... ?. electronic eye ?. the little red thingy that blinks when you press buttons on the remote and the one on the TV... Hubby's niece has to do that a few times a day because of all the animals and kids she has, always a few hairs or sticky stuff on one or both of the red thingies... lol

Truth be told I'd much rather have my old 100 pound Sony, that I got used, over 25 years ago to the new 15 pound, $900 Toshiba...

Thanks for your suggestions, Rita. I think it is the eye thingy on the remote that is broken and the remote batteries are rattling around in there and not making the connection to the eye. This 10 yr. old TV works fine for what I want a TV to do otherwise. But I tried a number of things last night to get it out of video mode so I could program the Universal remote. But none of them worked and that's when I decided to see if I could get a new remote.

I'd love a new HDTV LCD model, but I don't necessarily want to pay cable for HDTV and I don't want a huge TV sitting a mere 9 feet from my sofa. My son doesn't understand this and thinks I should get a 40/42" model when I get one. I don't want to hook up a play station and I don't want to use the TV in conjunction with my computer. I like to keep things simple so I can correct stuff when it happens w/o calling in someone to help. Sons are a big help, but they are over an hour's drive away.

I'll go get some more DVDs at the library and wait on the new remote.
