GW ads are getting tiresome

I think I'm finally getting fed up with gardenweb ads on here after the Olay one and now the Special K one, not to mention the constant "survey" thing popping up. I didn't mind them when they were sort of out of the way at the top or side but now they're dancing across the screen. Much more and I'm outta here for good.

PK- Are you registered? If I'm logged in, I never see them! I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser and they're always blocked. Give both options a try.

I also have a Macbook Pro with Safari and this was not a pop up ad, it was a banner ad from the top that moved down to cover the links at the top and turned the entire page blue and would produce a new tab with a cookie ad in it, if you tried to navigate the page clicking on any part of the page to scroll or open a thread. I have not seen a problem today at all. I think there was something wrong with the ad itself. I already have my settings set for 'no pop up ads' which I don't have a problem with. And any 'moving' ads are usually 'disabled by disabling plug ins' in my browser preferences, but doing that didn't help in this case. I don't use Firefox. I can see stationary banner ads along the top and the right side of the screen, on GW but I ignore those.

The top of the forum page under the title says, "This is the spot to share experiences with remodeling, decorating and maintaining kitchens..." Not everyone shares the same kitchen-related concerns, interests, or areas of expertise, so it's great all can be covered by this large community. Any truly 'unnecessary posts' will die a natural death, since if people aren't interested, there will be no follow-up posts and it will fall away, not using much volume. We are free to read or not read, post or not post. I agree that 'pay to play' would kill the forum. No one new would join in, because you can't know the value of this place until you participate...and those of us who hang around for fun and to help, or with just an occasional need or question, probably just wouldn't.

No ads here. I use Firefox, but there are other browsers to choose from. Granlan, are you sure you don't have the system requirements? I don't know what is required, but this site might help you to check on what the requirements are. I don't understand why so many have the ads problem. I don't think it is all the fault of iVillage. I believe each browser has some kind of ad blocker. Ravencajun posted recently with several suggestions in regard to the ads.. Here's one: for those with Firefox you can add the ad block plus add on , and then you need to add the easy list subscriptions to block all of the various ads.(you do not want plain ad block you want ad block plus) Adblock Plus 1.2.2 install that add on to firefox then shut down firefox and re open it, then go to this site: EasyList go to where it says Add easylist to ad block plus, and click there to install it to ABP. I would also go ahead and get the one below that called Easy Privacy, just add both of those to your Ad Block Plus and it should take care of all of those ads. Again shut down Firefox and restart it so that all is in effect About IE: There are settings in the browser where you can turn on and off a pop up blocker. It may help a little. Even if I'm on a Mac and using Safari, as long as I'm logged on, they're nonexistent.

Oh I think I solved it...I remember now I had a google toolbar thing before and somewhere/somehow it was changed. I reinstalled the Google toolbar and now no more pop up disturbances,, I hope LOL

Compumom, there is a Mac version of Firefox. I prefer it to Safari -- for one thing the forums seem to look better--, and DH says it has better security.

Thanks CC, good to know. Actually, I don't have a Mac, I just use one sometimes at work. Shhh, don't tell anyone I check the CF from work! ;-)

Microsoft is releasing their IE 8 "RC1" upgrade today. It's supposed to have a lot of enhanced features. I'm going to wait until they've got the bugs worked out before downloading. You can "take a tour" here...

Hmm, I have a Mac, and prefer Safari to Firefox. Maybe it's because my Mac is about 10 or more years old, but Firefox is way slower than Safari, and my computer keeps dumping it. I'll go to log into Firefox, and it won't come up. I'll have to download it again. Got tired of doing that, especially since it's so much slower. I really need a new Mac, but they're soooooo expensive.

Tricia, that's interesting news. Windows on all of my computers (home & work)went through a big update last week. I hope that this time (unlike Vista) they get the compatibility right and all the bugs OUT! What a fiasco that was!

I use Firefox at home and at work the pop-up blocker takes care of the annoying ads. Funny, I don't notice any difference if I'm logged in or not. Maybe I'm just not paying attention.

I was so glad to learn about Firefox. I love it.
