I am going to reinstall windows XP

Its a long story and need to reinstall my Windows XP.

I have everything backed up to my Maxtor external drive. All files, images etc the whole C drive.

I do not know how to put all my images documents files back onto my computer from the Maxtor.

How do I accomplish this task? What is the simplist way to do this.

I have all my software programs disk so this part will be easy.

How are you backing up to the Maxtor? With some specialized software that creates images, or is it copying the files and folders?

If it's copying files and folders so you can view the files on the Maxtor just as you do on your C: drive, you should be able to restore everything with windows explorer.

If you're using software that came with the drive and it's backing up in some proprietary format, you'll need to use that software to restore.

Depending on the software in question, it may be easier to use it to restore, anyway. Some backup software that ships with external drives has a simple one button backup/restore function.

You say you have backed up to the maxtor.
What program did you use to 'back up' with ?

You most likely do not want restore your C drive on an new install !

If you just copied C: to the maxtor, maybe just 'Explore' the drive and copy the contents of myDocuments to the computers myDocuments. Same with any other non-program, non-system file you might want.

When you speak of upgrading "my Dell computer", you're not speaking of installing an upgrade over top of XP are you? If so, I misunderstand, so disregard the rest of my post. :) So I'm assuming you intend to purchase a retail version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. In the first line of your post you mention 512 MB of RAM, a date, and then 2.00 GB of RAM. Does that mean it now has 2.00 GB of RAM or maybe 2 1/2 GB of RAM? Either way, I'm no expert but I'd think 512 MB is less than enough, but either 2 or 2 1/2 GB would be fine. I don't know much about Office, but wasn't Office 2003 was the last version that had the old style menu, before the newfangled ribbon came along. According to this, your Office 2002 would not be compatible but according to this, Office 2003 would be. Would your 2002 macros work in 2003? I don't know. Would it be worth the expense of buying a retail version of Windows 7, as well as Office 2003(or at least Word)? To me, probably not, to you, only you can decide. Personally, since it works, I'd probably just continue using it. Continue running a good real-time AV, occasionally scanning with a couple on-demand malware tools(Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware come to mind), use Firefox or Chrome(lie detected), using the WOT add-on(trusting it somewhat less than fully), and being careful what I open(email) and what I install. Question #1 - Here is an article expounding the features of WMP11 you might find interesting. #3 - You obviously have, or had at that time, connection problems between yourself and your ISP. When this happens again you can either reboot and start over or - click Start click Run type ipconfig /release click OK A small black window will appear for a very short time, now click Start click Run type ipconfig /renew click OK and hopefully things will have improved for you. #4 - A CD holds 80 minutes of music, there is no way to define how many songs due to varying lengths. For example I have a CD here with 21 tracks over 74 minutes but they vary from a mere 58 seconds to almost 4 minutes in play time. On the books issue I believe you can get better and more up to date info using your friendly Google. Any time you need an answer try Googling, if the first attempt does not answer your need then rephrase the query. As you bring up a list try looking through for those written in a style you are comfortable with. Any of these can be added to your Favourites or Bookmarks for future reference.

Hidden taskbar at bottom of screen, disappears when not using, when paused over, when in IE, it shows itself copied on top of itself 5 times. Spybot S&D run last week. I run all my checks at least once a month. Are we way off point here? I just wanted to know if I need to change anything or take any special precautions before re-installing XP on this beast. I have run in safe mode, no changes in problems. Am thinking install was corrupted or done wrong at shop, and it's closed. I need this thing to work right, I have to apply for jobs on it, usually I can't complete an application for it not accepting my input or not changing to next page of application. Problems are numerous, and I have not been able to fix them myself. 6 Oct '09 was date of shop install, I've probably spent 2 or 3 hundred hours attempting fixes. Last time I tried re-install, before new hard drive, it took 12 hours. That included install of high speed internet connect, 4 in 1 printer,(succesful) Avira, Spybot, Money, Works, Keyboard and mouse, camera program, all drivers, SP3, etc. I was careful to shut down between all installs, as directed. I could not get to this site, which I had read and occasionally used for years. Many problems with IE8. I'm so grateful you have all taken your time to try to help me. I'm so frustrated after all this "investigating" and most of what you've all asked me to check, I'd already done. Thanks so much for your help.

The other laptop is a 9300 and it appears completely incompatable with mine so it is essentially out of the picture. I was looking at the 9300 manual and see that I would need the driver and windows reinstall disks if I were going in that direction.

Maxtor has options and I clicked back up C drive. From my computer Icon I can click on Maxtor F drive. Maxtor is an external drive.(which is called one touch)
I can open up the external drive and see all the folders and if I click on one of the folers you can see images, documents that are in each of the folders.

That sounds like it just automated a file copy. You can restore using windows explorer.

How do I restore using windows explorer? I don't know too much about computers. If you are talking about restore points to an earlier date I do not want to do this. I need to install my windows XP.

To restore using windows explorer, start two copies of it. In one, point to the external drive and then find the files you want to restore. Highlight them and select edit/copy from the menu. In the other explorer window, go to the directory where you want to restore and choose edit/paste.

You can copy entire directories this way by selecting the directory and copy in the one and paste in the other.

I will give the windows explorer way a try. I procrasted too long and now will have to wait until I get home in June so I don't mess things up on the computer otherwise my husband will not have a clue how to use the computer if I change things or don't get them back exact.
