I have/read Windows xp For Dummies, by Andy Rathbone

I still have questions.

1.Does Media Player 11 differ greatly than 10?

2. In the book, for adding a song to the your sync list- there is no mention of 'dragging' at all- it seems you add a song/albumn by right clicking in the left hand column- the 'library' side. Have any of you synced this way?I still have the problem of losing my '+' sign to '-' when I drag a song to the sync column.

3. I want to look at 'online music stores'. When I click on the online stores, a messege comes up 'that I am working offline'- but I'm not- I am connected. I checked by clicking File- and 'work offline' is not checked. Plus, I am online in another screen.

What does this mean?

4. How many songs/albums can I burn to a new CD? Can they only hold 1 albumn, or can they hold more? If they do hold more- does the computer know 'where to start' when you try to add another albumn?

Also- do you recommend another book to learn about the computer/winxp? This book helped- but not as much as I had hoped- it is 'Windows xp For Dummies'.

Question #1 - Here is an article expounding the features of WMP11 you might find interesting.

#3 - You obviously have, or had at that time, connection problems between yourself and your ISP. When this happens again you can either reboot and start over or -
click Start
click Run
type ipconfig /release
click OK

A small black window will appear for a very short time, now

click Start
click Run
type ipconfig /renew
click OK and hopefully things will have improved for you.

#4 - A CD holds 80 minutes of music, there is no way to define how many songs due to varying lengths. For example I have a CD here with 21 tracks over 74 minutes but they vary from a mere 58 seconds to almost 4 minutes in play time.

On the books issue I believe you can get better and more up to date info using your friendly Google. Any time you need an answer try Googling, if the first attempt does not answer your need then rephrase the query. As you bring up a list try looking through for those written in a style you are comfortable with. Any of these can be added to your Favourites or Bookmarks for future reference.

Another thing regarding the + and - signs. When a listing is expanded, the plus sign (meaning that the folder is closed) will turn into a minus sign (meaning that the folder is open). I'm sure that this is by design and indicates that you are working inside that folder. Does this action prevent you from dropping the file into the folder? I don't particularly understand syncing as it pertains to Windows Media Player (maybe you have an MP3 player?) but I completely understand file and folder structure.

I sometimes speak up concerning others' suggestions that seem like Chicken Little-type fear mongering. I also think too many people have too many unsupported fears of unlikely risks on the internet and from PC use in general. I'm generally in agreement with Kudzu's comments, but let's be realistic - no one knows what the evil doers will do. Using an XP PC on a network that's unconnected to the internet - I'd say zero risk. Use it in full confidence until the hardware dies. Using an XP PC on the internet? Time will tell. Having capable firewalls, updated security software, etc., is a must for all PCs with all operating systems anyway. I have an XP PC that I use very occasionally that has all the protection reasonably available. I'll be sure to remove any personal info and will use it carefully. If I see any hint of odd activity, I'll just replace it. For most PCs old enough to have XP, spending good money to put a newer Windows on old hardware seems a poor choice to me.

When evaluating software or hardware, it makes sense to ignore the popular press, especially the tech blogs and to an extent, consumer opinion. Change is difficult for us humans and the early reviews of XP bear it out. Below is a snapshot of cnet's Windows XP review back in 2001. I got to this page using the web archive. Note that cnet bemoans the fact that a user can only load XP on one computer. Really cnet? And note user opinions: 48% disliked XP after its first several months. Microsoft was roundly criticized for not having an OS that would work across all platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone. Now Win 8 is negatively reviewed for not having a start button. Anyone remember when the criticism was that Windows had a start button? I use Win7 home premium on this computer and Win7 Pro on my daytrading rig. The next computer I buy will have Windows 8. amysrq- Oh, P&L tile, that stuff is so beautifully made and seems durable and sturdy (from the samples I was able to fondle at a showroom). I agree with punamytsike, depending on the level of variation between the tiles, it may be worth considering dropping the ones that have the highest contrast in randomly instead of grouping them. But, that depends on both the level of variation and your tolerance for tileative dissonance. Our upstairs bath is tiled in 4" white marble, all different kinds. Of course it was such a steal that I had to buy it, and I carefully culled out ones I wanted to use under the towel racks, where the towels would cover them. Our old school tile guy just as carefully put them in randomly, he explained that the best way to hide variation is in plain sight. After seeing the end result, I agreed. This is a highly personal decision, and one that only you can make after some contemplation, my real advice is to keep your mind open and play with tile placement often till you find what pleases your eye. you can disconnect an old machine from the web .... and not worry about security issues ... so use your old machine... disconnected ... with all its old programs ... and peripherals .... and just get a new machine .... for WWW work .... you would probably be amazed what you can get ... machine.. and memory-wise.. for a half or a quarter of what you invested in the old machine .... it really is mind bending ... then.. all you have to figure out.. is how to get info from one to the other ... and a memory stick.. or some such... will usually get around that ... you guys seem to be trapped in the one machine for everything issue ... if i liked to tour the woods in a 4 wheel truck .. i would have an old beat up one for two tracking and ditch driving... and a nicer newer one.. for the roads ... and work ... personally ... for the cost of W10 ... and the hours it will take an old 7 person to install and learn it... [not to mention the mind bending stress .. lol] ..... for about 300 bucks.. you can have a new machine and be enjoying both... inside a half day ... when its all said and done.. i would probably wait until 10 came out ... if you can wait that long ... right now.. an investment of a stand alone memory.. and full backup for the old machine on that.. MIGHT save you ... from future disaster.. if you rely on an unsupported .. wired to the WWW ... operating system ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: and you could get it for about half... if you coule figure out how to share the old moniter ....
