Problems Sending A File

I am trying to send a friend a safe exe file. It is a cribbage thing.....and the name of the file is Cribbage.exe. I have used it for years. The original website that had this cribbage platform no longer is in existance, yet you can still play cribbage with others connecting with our IP numbers.

Here is the problem.....my provider will not allow me to send an EXE file. I tried sending it by Hotmail....with the same result. They will not allow me to send an EXE file.

Here is what I tried. I take the file "Cribbage.exe" and rename it as "Cribbage.jpg". I can send it after making the change. When I send the file to myself....I save the attachment "Cribbage.jpg"....then rename it to "Cribbage.exe". I am then able to extract the file I sent to myself....and it works for me. However, when I sent it to my friend.....she gets this message after she renames the file back to an exe and then tries to extract the file: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

Several questions. Why does it work when I send the file to myself......and secondly....does anyone know a way to send an exe file?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. My only other way...would be to put the file on a CD....and mail it snail mail.

I use YouSendIt for sending any type of large file.

The service is free so long as you don't click on any of the "extras".

You can send an email from the site with the download link direct to your friend, and it also sends you an email with the link for you to pass on to others.

Thank you Colin. I just signed up....hopefully with out committing to the pay areas. I just sent the exe file....and got notification that the email was sent.

Now......it will be interesting to see if my friend can open the file. I will let you know if she was successful.

I really appreciate your help Colin. This forum is one of the gems of the internet.

That would be awesome! I'm pretty sure the problem is unique to GoDaddy (something about changes they have made for server security). At this point I think their poor customer support is either because A) they don't know, or B) they don't really want anyone except the total experts using PHP on their servers. Dealing with them has been like talking to someone that doesn't speak English and wouldn't be interested in what I had to say even if they could understand me. LOL I was going to post the file on here, but Gardenweb won't let it though (probably too long). If your friend thinks he has any ideas, I could email it to you.

You will need either RealPlayer or Real Alternative to play a .rm file. After you install the one of your choice, right-click the filename in Windows Explorer, select Properties, where it says "opens with" click the Change button, select the program you want to open the file with, click OK then Apply and that should do it. This is for XP, Vista is probably similar.

It's possible that the design is in a different version that 2.0. If it is in Ver. 7 the ver 2.0 won't read or write it.

Larry, The download is just a normal download, it isn't through email so there should be no problems. The email just provides the link to where the file is stored on YouSendIt's site.

If both parties have Skype installed you can send with that.

I have in the past renamed exe to xxx and had the recipient rename back to exe on arrival.

Thanks ravencajun. I am bookmarking all these websites that allow large transfers. I used YouSendIt to send the exe file I was trying to send. So far, I have not heard from my friend as to whether the file was sent successfully or not.

My provider will allow up to 10Meg emails......but they draw the line on any exe files....no matter how small. I will be trying these new ones....like YouSendIt or MailBigFile....to see if they allow exe files.

another alternative is to put the file on a site which will store it and then give you a location which you can share with others, file storage sites like that have free accounts with certain limits and of course you can pay for a larger storage capacity.

When you send an exe file from a personal computer to me on my home Vista, I have to do a right click / properties on the file and allow it to run before it will function. It will have a file came from another computer and might be dangerious warning in properties.
I dont often get exe's from home puters so I forget exacts.

Window should pop an allow it note, but doesnt here. It could be I checked a dont show me that message again option.
