Trying to download AVG Free......

Wow, with my dial-up connection I'm told 12 hrs.. Problem is my server automatically disconnects after three hours. Is there a 'smaller' anti-virus that I could use for two weeks. My daughter thinks she can download the AVG onto a disc and mail it to me, but I'd feel better if there were anything I could use for right now! Any info will be appreciated.

They are all pretty large files these days Sheila. Don't you have a neighbour or friend with high speed who would download it onto a thumb drive or CD for you?

Avira's Antivir is only 21 megs or Avast is 22.5

Another option is to start your download early in the morning when many of your time zone have not got to the computer yet. That helped me when I was on dialup. Also if you get disconnected and start over I think you will find the program will continue downloading from where you got cut off as long as it is pointed to the same folder.

You should have plenty of time for her to mail it to you. Here's a link from a thread on the AVG website. Notice the last response is from one of their moderators, dated today, saying AVG 7.5 will be supported till Dec. 31, 2008. Sandy

I had the restart problem with AVG 7.5 and was able to fix it by right clicking on the AVG tray icon,going to launch AVG free control center,single left click on update manager to highlight it,go into properties at the bottom,selected update immediately and require confirmation from the user,clicked ok then exited AVG.Maybe this will solve the problem.

It means they are basically loaning you the program for 30 days to see if you like it. After that you will be expected to buy or remove it. You probably would not be allowed to update for too many days past the 30 day period. If you use my link just pay attention and stay with the free version. usually what has been said is that you can shut everything but explorer and systray. The reason many times it tells you to install in safe mode is because in safe mode all those "running Processes" are not yet running like they are in normal start up mode so therefore you do not have to do all the shut down of the running stuff. I generally just make sure there are no obvious programs running, I shut my browsers, close all email applications, if it says to shut down specific programs I do that, if it says disconnect from internet I do that. The rest I leave alone. I would guess everyone has their own method.

Thanks bob, I did it sucessfully!!!!! I am a happy camper now! Wouldn't you just know it, I got knocked off on the last step while it was getting me the latest updates but I managed to get them when I got online again. I was on pins and needles hoping I wouldn't get knocked off during the DL, whew! One thing that happened right off the bat was, it said AVG detected I had an outdated version of Roxio CD creator that needed updating first, etc. etc. which I don't even have on my computer. Now, I have to see if I can get Norton off my computer without it taking something I need, with it? Hope it is a program all by itself. Urlee

Thx guys. I guess I do have time to wait, but I'm operating without any anti-virus program right now. I do have Spybot S&D and Adaware. But I'm still concerned and am using the 'puter very little. I'm going to try the Avira tonight and see if I can get it downloaded thru the night.

you can supplement during this time by doing online scans from some of the sites that have free online scanning, that will take time also but at least you can feel safer since you are getting to do scans.

There are many people that exist with out Antivirus on their pc and only use the online scanners but you do have to be very careful what you open and where you surf.

Granniek, Is your server shutting down after three hours or
is it the computer? If unsure , go to control panel > Power
options. Mine is set to Never, Never, Never on the options.
There are some download accellerators here and there that
MAYBE you could use. Grady

Thx Ravencajun, I'll use this scan. I am always very careful with surfing, ditto on email! Grady it is the server. They flash anote and give you 60 sec notice. And I do supposedly have accelerated download...Hah!

Very frustrating night, last. I downloaded the Avira only to have it finish and tell me there was an error and to download it again. Then decided to try AVG, downloaded just fine, but wouldn't install. Told me the installation files were corrupt and to download a fresh copy! grrrrrrr.

I guess I'll try downloading it again tonight! In the meantime on to the on-line scan.
