Trying to download AVG Free......

Wow, with my dial-up connection I'm told 12 hrs.. Problem is my server automatically disconnects after three hours. Is there a 'smaller' anti-virus that I could use for two weeks. My daughter thinks she can download the AVG onto a disc and mail it to me, but I'd feel better if there were anything I could use for right now! Any info will be appreciated.

They are all pretty large files these days Sheila. Don't you have a neighbour or friend with high speed who would download it onto a thumb drive or CD for you?

Avira's Antivir is only 21 megs or Avast is 22.5

Another option is to start your download early in the morning when many of your time zone have not got to the computer yet. That helped me when I was on dialup. Also if you get disconnected and start over I think you will find the program will continue downloading from where you got cut off as long as it is pointed to the same folder.

You should have plenty of time for her to mail it to you. Here's a link from a thread on the AVG website. Notice the last response is from one of their moderators, dated today, saying AVG 7.5 will be supported till Dec. 31, 2008. Sandy

I would never buy a program that told me I had nasties on the computer but they could remove them for a price. Plenty of good freeware out there: Spywareblaster Spybot Search & Destroy AdAware AVG anti spyware - NOT the same as their anti virus Ewido All except Spywareblaster need to be run occasionally. All need to be updated manually every few days. These are only as good as the last update a person installed. Out of date software is useless but it takes just a few minutes to keep these programs current. Then there are free online scans Trendmicro Symantec BitDefender and others

Try it from the link below , choose save when the window opens and save the file to the desktop, then double click it to install Cleaner. That error you're getting is an Internet explorer error, you would need to change the security settings in the browser to medium. Lets see if this works first. I know on the tech forums there are a lot of reports of false positives with AVG lately, not saying that is the case but could be. I would go run some of the online scans and see what turns up. I have really bad vision and can not read that info on there but does it say lavasoft adaware? if so then it likely is a false positive of adaware that it is detecting. Once started, the rogue itself, like all other rogues, will scan your computer and state that there are numerous infections on it. If you attempt to use the program to remove any of these infections, though, it will state that you need to purchase the program first. In reality, though, the infections that the rogues states are on your computer are all legitimate files that if deleted could cause Windows to not operate correctly. Therefore, please do not trust anything it states are infections. You will need to remove this. The computer guy will probably reformat / return to factory settings.

Thx guys. I guess I do have time to wait, but I'm operating without any anti-virus program right now. I do have Spybot S&D and Adaware. But I'm still concerned and am using the 'puter very little. I'm going to try the Avira tonight and see if I can get it downloaded thru the night.

you can supplement during this time by doing online scans from some of the sites that have free online scanning, that will take time also but at least you can feel safer since you are getting to do scans.

There are many people that exist with out Antivirus on their pc and only use the online scanners but you do have to be very careful what you open and where you surf.

Granniek, Is your server shutting down after three hours or
is it the computer? If unsure , go to control panel > Power
options. Mine is set to Never, Never, Never on the options.
There are some download accellerators here and there that
MAYBE you could use. Grady

Thx Ravencajun, I'll use this scan. I am always very careful with surfing, ditto on email! Grady it is the server. They flash anote and give you 60 sec notice. And I do supposedly have accelerated download...Hah!

Very frustrating night, last. I downloaded the Avira only to have it finish and tell me there was an error and to download it again. Then decided to try AVG, downloaded just fine, but wouldn't install. Told me the installation files were corrupt and to download a fresh copy! grrrrrrr.

I guess I'll try downloading it again tonight! In the meantime on to the on-line scan.
