Trip to Denver in May, hope to see Lee

My brother and I are planning a trip to Denver (which I've never visited, except to change planes in the airport), and so I sent an email to Lee and never got a response. I sent another email to Ann_T and never got a response from her either, and so I'm wondering if anyone has gotten an email from Lee recently. We're also planning to see our cousin, whom I have not seen in over 40 years. She is one of only three or four first cousins that I have left - two died in the last couple of years. She and her family own a chain of Italian delis in the Denver area, and one of her sons has a spot on one of the Denver TV news shows each week.

My cousin now wants us to go with her to NE New Mexico to visit our aunt (whom I've not seen in as many years), but if we do this, I won't be able to go to Boulder. I need to hear from Lee so that I can finalize my plans. My aunt is 89 and is a nursing home and has been told that her family has abandoned her. We found out recently that her husband has been stealing her mail and withholding it from her, and so she never received the get well cards we sent her or the money that DF has been sending her. DF keeps in contact with her via phone, and so I don't see how she can think she has been abandoned. The story is so long and convoluted that my cousin spent three and a half hours talking to me last Tuesday evening.

I'd like to see Lee, but I can't do both, as we will only be going for a long week-end Friday through Monday. Any news updates on Lee?

Lar's I'm here and I would love to see you. Are you sure you can't extend your trip by a day and also go to see your Aunt?

I'm sorry I haven't written back yet. I did get the email you sent on Sunday, but I tend to look at emails at night and by then I am just too tired to write back. The last weekend in May is perfect and I'll send you an email today.

I tried growing both varieties. The first time I received 2 to 3 year old trees on the rootstock with the interstem for earlier fruiting. They did fruit, but canker got both before ripening. They made about 90 days before dying. The second try I received younger trees without the interstem. They made about 6 months before dying of canker. I am stubborn, so tried one last time and had this set growing on the southwest part of town. They were younger trees and made about 18 months before dying of canker. They will fruit here if you are in a part of town without disease pressure. When I lived in the Bear Creek (northwest) area, I did not have to spray for bugs or disease....no fungus, bacteria, or PC. The area I now live in Kingwood (northeast) is high in disease and bugs. I doubt that you could keep them alive in the Houston area. If anyplace here has a chance, It would be Bear Creek or west side. Believe it or not, I still have 2 cherry trees. A royal ranier and a lapins. My lapins is @6 to 7 years old and flowered and fruited for the first time this year. It only produced a few blooms and fruit, so I did not net it for birds. The birds ate the few that it made. The lapins is on GM61 and doesn't seem to be as susceptable to canker. Waiting to see what happens next year.

Oh Jim...I loved EVERY bit of his apartment! All the special touches everywhere, done so tastefully, are just so inspirational. This was like a 'Trip Down Memory Lane' for me. I was raised in NY, and as a teenager, my mother and I would visit her cousin's Apt in the East Village. He was a textile designer and his partner was an artist. Whenever we went during Christmas, their place was so spectacular to visit. Just like this apartment...everywhere you looked there was some creative touch. Every Christmas, we enjoyed receiving the most amazing Christmas Cards they would design. My mother kept all of them, and displayed them every year. Thanks Jim...I enjoyed seeing this designer and his apartment, for many reasons. jane

Ellen, It was a potluck! I prepared the orzo pasta salad that Jojoco posted and a 3 cheese platter with crackers. That salad it to die for! We have left overs for dinner tonight. The other dishes were Sam's Club fried chicken, 2 green bean casseroles, sausage jambalaya, Chocolate cake, cherry turnovers with vanilla ice cream and lots of wine ;-) AH HA! I'm happy to know that Cathy, Lee and Charlotte all had a hand in choosing my items. It makes the package more special just knowing 3 friends helped. Boo, that is such a nice compliment. You may not say that after spending a couple of days with me though ;-) Lee, thanks again. My package is perfect!

"I just love these people!" And we love all of you. As soon as we got in the car to head back to Boulder, Max started talking about how nice you all are. Of course he's met Dlynn before and this breakfast just reinforced his opinion from the first time he met her. Sharon, we want to be on your list, we really do. I felt so bad when we missed you by days last year in New Mexico. Cathy, I had hoped we'd see you this year in CO, but next year would be fine too. And we can add your Raymond to the list of great guys. I've been lucky enough to meet other really nice CF guys too, but then you just expect that from friends on the forum. Annie, thanks, I'm so much better, but after my time at sea level and then coming back to the smoke, I can tell you I'm really huffing and puffing back at cardiac rehab - went once last week, and will go twice this week and then three and four times the following weeks. It's slow to gain and so quick to lose if you don't keep up. Karen and Charles, thanks for making time to see us. Come back soon please. And thanks for posting the pictures. Lee

Lee, Kevin was able to extend his vacation by one day, and so we will be able to go to both Boulder and NM. We'll be arriving in Denver the last Thursday in May (but we don't have our tickets yet), and then Sunday we will go to NM with Nancy to see Aunt Gerry, spend the night in NM and Nancy will be able to take us to the Denver airport on Monday. Nancy is retired, and so she should have available time. This way we can check out of our hotel on Sunday morning, return the rental car, and save an extra day of hotel and rental car that we would not be using. I think it would be wasteful to do it any other way. I'm glad that the dates work for you. I think it should be beautiful at that time of year, but with my luck, it will rain.

Nancy said that we could stay with her if she had room, but she sold her house and moved into a retirement villa, which is only one bedroom. I was fine with staying in a hotel, but I didn't want to pay for a hotel in Denver if I would be spending the night in NM. Rental cars are not cheap either, and the money I save can be used on a return trip, if necessary.

Ann, thanks for the phone call today - it was nice to hear your voice again. I feel a bit strange that I had to go through the forum to contact people, but at least it works! Unfortunately, I'm not extremely busy at work right now, and so I can have a fairly long phone conversation. I have plenty of projects that I'm working on, but I don't have deadlines at the moment. A fair portion of my time is spent dreaming up new designs, and so it might not look like I'm busy when I'm thinking about what I'm going to do next. For now, I am designing more furniture than they are able to make, and so I spend a bit of time helping production with certain technical issues, particularly with technical writing and documenting warehouse procedures for assemblies or construction.
