Breakfast in Denver

I've waited to post this until I knew Karen and Charles were home.

Last Friday while Karen (RiverRat) and her husband Charles were visiting their daughter for the weekend in Denver, they met Dlynn and Max and me for a late breakfast.

I'm lucky enough to have met RR and Dlynn before (and briefly met Charles too). But this was the first time that RR and Dlynn had met. Of course, just like every other CF meetup I have ever been a part of, everyone was acting like lifelong friends within 5 seconds. Conversation ranged from food to football and was all wonderful. The men talked, the women talked, we all talked together, nonstop. All too quickly we noticed it was after 12:00 and RR and Charles had to meet their daughter for some sightseeing.

Dlynn came with bags filled with Camembert and wonderful large crackers both made where she lives and a neat CD of a local pianist and keyboard musician who composed and recorded the CD with backup musicians. It's a really pleasant jazz CD that I've played several times and just put on iPod - nice background music.

RR brought each of us a wonderful cookbook published by the Women's Commission of Southwest Louisiana and of course she contributed a number of recipes to the book. The Commission does a number of things to support and enhance the lives of women in their area and of course this started a lengthy conversation at the table.

I came with Wild Porcini Sauce that I had delivered while I was in San Francisco from Sciabica, and Italian pasta and Greek Olive Oil.

Dlynn and I parted with plans to make a Penzeys run to one of the Denver burbs in the next few weeks and I'm really thrilled that Karen and Charles's daughter is in Denver because that means they will visit again.

The restaurant, in a major hotel, which had many good reviews on various sites, was a new one for me, selected to be fairly convenient for Karen and Charles since I knew their time was limited. RR and I had eggs Benedict, Dlynn a breakfast burrito in a homemade/fried tortilla and Charles and Max had huevos rancheros We might have done better in Boulder but the timing would not have worked out. It's easy to find great weekend breakfasts out, not so easy on a weekday. The service was good, the food OK, but the company was superb! And that is what is really important!

What, no pics? : ) Sounds like a great breakfast with good friends everyone. I'm sure my ears were burning while you talking football. LOL I'm guessing Karen and Dlynn are getting ready for tonights game. I'll be watching too. Thanks for sharing Lee!

Sounds like so much fun. I wish my first outing with a CF'er would've been more enjoyable. It was most certainly NOT the company of doucanoe however! She was charming. I had a gall stone that was lodged in the opening of my GB and I had to cut the outing short because the pain was overwhelming. I hope there are more outings in the future! At the time I felt so guilty for leaving, but once hospitalized realized it could not be helped. :-)

By the way, the last few km and the final velodrome sprint are here, complete with a surchauffe commentary by the Belgian announcers. Many bike races are not broadcast in the US, so cycling fans huddle over keyboards, watching grainy videofeeds like this one from a European broadcaster. Since you may not speak French, or at least not surexcited, half-screamed Belgian French, I will narrate. Starting at 2:40 - Cancellara and Vanmarche enter the velodrome together for the final 1 1/2 laps. They pedal slowly, calculating. Vanmarche, the young rider with no contract for next year, has delivered the ride of his life and is seconds from an incredible, career-making victory. A win at P-R will assure his employment for years. And he knows he is the better sprinter. Cancellara, the veteran and nine years' senior, has overcome almost the entire peleton today but desperately wanted to shake the young rider and arrive in the velodrome alone. He's lost P-R in sprint finishes before. They slow to a walk, climb high on the banking, each trying to maneuver the other into the lead. Vanmarche takes it. Confidence, or inexperience? They proceed around the velodrome, Vanmarche checking over his shoulder, listening for Cancellara to jump, Cancellara waiting for Vanmarche to jump and poised to follow. They move high on the banking, then Vanmarche dives down the steep slope, sprinting as hard as 250 km of racing in his legs will allow. Just 100 meters, oh Dieu, just 80 meters more! I don't know what language Cancellara prays in - being Swiss, he is polyglot - but something gives him wings. Cancellara matches the younger man's acceleration, gets tight in Vanmarche's slipstream, builds momentum, and swings out. Vanmarche is the faster sprinter, but he went too early, gave Cancellara too much time, now his legs are cramping, muscles unable to obey his screams, through his tears he sees Cancellara rise up in victory. Cancellara steers his bike to the infield and falls off, chest heaving, immobile but weightless. All the pressure is gone. With every team attacking him for six hours, bruised from two crashes in the prior week, his own teammates long gone, he hurt himself like never before and won his third P-R. (Don't feel too badly for Sep Vanmarche. I'm quite sure he will have a tidy contract with a solid team for 2014.) Lars, I'd love to see you and Kevin again. As you can see from my post it took a ridiculously long time to drive to Denver and in fact I got off the expressway and drove 15 miles on city streets to SAVE time. It's all in the timing - if you drive between the cities in the middle of the day or after the evening rush, it's not bad at all. Chase, we'd love to meet you and Clive. I think it's great that you are planning another long car trip. And you would love Dlynn. I do think that meeting other CF members is on of the most fun things about the forum - I'd love to meet many more of you. Lisa you are right, that was an oops on my part. For so many years I have thought about how we don't have an Ikea or a TJs, and I was thinking that you have TJs, but no, you have an Ikea in the SLC area. We have an Ikea under construction, scheduled to open about a year from now. I think you need to visit your sister and the CFers here. Lee

Heirloom Tomato Farms sale this weekend in Denver

lol - I can't go to Vancouver to buy plants, either - I think Steve linked Tatiana's site for us because of the information about tomatoes available on it. And, of course, you can always order seeds from Vancouver... I went to the Heirloom Tomato Farms sale on Saturday; a rather chilly, gloomy day but I came home with some new babies so that made it all good. I purchased these plants: Silvery Fir Tree, Amana Orange, Kelloggs Breakfast - maybe I will get more than one tomato from it??? - Napa Giant, Hillbilly and an Amethyst Cream Cherry. I did ask about the Dr. Wyche's lack of production here in Colorado. I didn't have a chance to go into detail with him about it but the man I spoke with said he grew the plant and got about 8-9 tomatoes from it. Better than one, certainly, but I decided that if other more knowledgeable growers didn't have luck with it, I wasn't going to give it a try. Let's see how I do with the Kelloggs Breakfast cultivar! Unless I have terrible luck with their plants, I will be back next year. I am on the Irish Farms email list and plan to check out their sale next spring as well I had already purchased Black Krim, Celebrity and Super Fantastic from Paulino Gardins a couple of weeks ago so I now have 9 tomato plant. Not very many in comparison to lots of gardeners here, but more than the 3 or 4 that I usually plant, and I still hope to get one or two at the Spring Swap. Except for the Black Krim and Celebrity, these are all new varieties for me; I am very much looking forward to getting my tomato fix! Holly

Gurley, since you are still in the planning stages, note that the space off the kitchen is not 14x14 as shown, but more like 14x7. The walkway between the living room and mudroom cuts it in two. And by the way, it gives a great view of the mudroom and laundry room from the living room. Anyway, don't worry about it becoming more used than the living room because there isn't room for it to be. How do you plan to use the living room? There isn't much space for a tv, I suppose. It will go above the fireplace? But it is also a walkway from all the bedrooms to the kitchen and garage, and probably the laundry because it is a straighter shot than winding through the warren that is the front-left portion of the house. In Bedroom 2, consider flipping the closet so that the door is closer to the bedroom door, or somewhere along its wall. That gives the bedroom another usable corner, making furniture placement much easier. In the master bath, do you need a knee-hole vanity space? I'd go with one straight vanity with two sinks, it will be easier to move around. If you think you will use the room labeled Dining Room as a dining room, consider changing the kitchen around so that the two are better connected. In fact, the front-left corner is a bit of a rabbit warren as I said, do you plan to use it as labeled or would you like something a bit more efficient?

Well of this group I have had the pleasure to meet/spend a week with Karen! Would love to meet you, Lee and Dlynn some day!

Sounds like you all had a superb breakfast and I am so glad you were all able to hook up!

Um...and yes....SOMEONE had to take pictures, right?

I remember many, many years ago (in the 70's??) having breakfast at the original Brown Palace Hotel--white cotton tablecloths and real silver service, SOS served out of a silver bowl. Oh my, what memories!! Hope your breakfast was as memorable.

Then, of course, on the other side of the tracks. Breakfast at Lakewood Bar and Grill--SOS there too, and scrambled eggs with homemade green chili sauce. Chili rellenos with that same sauce at lunch. I burp remembering it!

Jessica, I'll stand with you and sniff. Darn, no pictures....

It sounds like a perfect meal to me, though, the company is always more important to me than the location. I did see that Boulder was voted #1 "foodie town" by Bon Appetit, after making it as a runner up last year.

Elery would have loved the huevos rancheros, I'm sure, although I can't even imagine anything with chilies in it for breakfast!

Karen has the pictures, but I'm sure she's still too busy to post them. It was a marvelous morning finally getting to meet Karen and Charles. And yes, football did come up a time or two. I just wish we could have had more time to spend together.... we were having so much fun. It has been way too long since I spent time with Lee and Max, so I'm glad I got to see them too.

I loved the burrito that I ordered. It was huge and I was only able to eat about half of it. Karen has pictures of it, so you'll be able to see it. The restaurant was really lovely, and in a great part of town. But, I have to agree with Lee --- Boulder has great restaurants, so maybe next time we can go there.

I've had a bit of a chance to look through my new cookbook and can't wait to try some new things in it. I spend lots of time sitting in the car waiting on my kids at lessons, so I'm going to bring it with me in the next few weeks and start bookmarking the stuff I'd like to try. I was planning to try Lee's Wild Porcini Sauce for dinner tomorrow, but I seem to be catching a cold today. If I am, I'll wait until my taste buds are fully functional before I try it.... I'd hate to waste it on a day when I can't taste things.

Hopefully, Karen will be back to visit her daughter more often so we can see more of her. She says she doesn't want to come in the winter, but maybe we can convince her that our weather isn't that bad. I'd hate to have to wait until next summer to see her again.

Oh what a whirlwind trip! So much to do and not enough time to do it!

I will post the pictures tonight! We had so much fun meeting up with ya'll (or is that all ya'll)! LOL!

Dylynn, you are a wonderful new friend! After we left, from breakfast, I told Charles how much we had in common...busy women that we are! Thank you for coming all the way down to meet with us. I now have 4 Colorado friends that will probably get tired of me calling them and telling ya'll that I'm coming in to Colorado for a visit! LOL! Sooo much fun!

Lee and Max, I want to thank you for setting the perfect scene to enjoy each other. You my friends are excellent host and I'm so proud to call you my friends.

We had such a short time together but I felt like I've known Dona for a long time. Max is so charming and it was good to see Lee again. BTW, Lee looks great! She has had some health issues but seems to be in top notch health!

Karen, don't confuse me with those food pictures! I saw "Breakfast Burrito" underneath the picture of Charles and Max's breakfast and I thought that was a picture of what I had ordered. I kept staring at it thinking "I don't remember it looking like that.... Maybe I should have worn my glasses while I ate!" Then I realized that it wasn't a picture of my plate, so I wasn't as crazy (or blind) as I thought.

"I just love these people!" And we love all of you. As soon as we got in the car to head back to Boulder, Max started talking about how nice you all are. Of course he's met Dlynn before and this breakfast just reinforced his opinion from the first time he met her.

Sharon, we want to be on your list, we really do. I felt so bad when we missed you by days last year in New Mexico.

Cathy, I had hoped we'd see you this year in CO, but next year would be fine too. And we can add your Raymond to the list of great guys. I've been lucky enough to meet other really nice CF guys too, but then you just expect that from friends on the forum.

Annie, thanks, I'm so much better, but after my time at sea level and then coming back to the smoke, I can tell you I'm really huffing and puffing back at cardiac rehab - went once last week, and will go twice this week and then three and four times the following weeks. It's slow to gain and so quick to lose if you don't keep up.

Karen and Charles, thanks for making time to see us. Come back soon please. And thanks for posting the pictures.
