W7 File Sharing

Need a tip, tired of reading and trial-and-error.

I got my W7 (starter) Netbook on the home network via the associated wireless router. This went well, albeit I always wonder why MS changes simple user function when a new OS is released.

I have not been able to share files on the Netbook. With XP all one has to do to open sharing is to open windows explorer, right click the subject folder for sharing and then click on sharing, making the proper choices: read only or whatever. What are the first couple of "clicks" on W7 to get to a tool that allows marking individual folders for sharing? In XP another nice thing is the display of the "hand" on folders/devices that are marked for sharing. Is there something like that in W7?

Thanks, looks easy... still why all the changes form XP? Rhetorical, of course.

I'm doing this on a new Netbook and it is making me feel better about the need to replace my main machine, a notebook. The new machine will have W7 Home Professional I believe, 64 bit. Not sure I remember the W7 levels correctly, the Netbook has the Starter version, but I assume most of the usual user stuff looks the same.

It is fairly simple...once you understand it all! It used to be that you had to type in DOS commands and couldn't click on anything on the screen: that was simple, but not very much fun. It sounds like you are trying to teach yourself to do things by clicking and guessing, and by assuming it will be the same as previous. You can do that, but in my experience you never know what you don't know, and you waste a lot of time. For example, how much time have you spent on this one issue? My suggestion is -- and don't be insulted -- that you need to buy yourself the book "Windows 7 for Dummies." The Dummies series are very helpful books (I've used them myself) that walk you step-by-step through how to make things work. Ravencajun, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check that out. One of the main reasons I log on to his computer is to "clean" the system up and make sure he knows I use it every so often. As for the limewire, I know he has used it. I'm trying to discourage him in a nice way before I have to force it away. You see its hard for him to give it up when all his friends are using it without any supervision. Because I won't I'm the badguy. I actually intervene the best I can and like to know what he's up to on the net. I don't have a problem with kids online I just think they need to be aware of all the garbage on it. And all these so called "free" software packages could really get some unknowing kid in some real trouble. Does limewire know how much money is involved in a piracy case? I'm sure the caught individual had know idea that they were being watched. I despise limewire because of all the trash on it as well as legit torrent etc. I opened it up myself and and searched songs and in the mix is porn and other stuff I don't want my kids seeing. Neal

go to this windows 7 forum thread and follow the directions given by Jimbo45, it has made the difference for me and many others I shared it with.
Windows 7 - XP to 7 Printer sharing

the names MUST be the same on all workgroups and printers. Same applies for using the file sharing.

as to why the changes well that you would have to ask the folks at MS.
