Is Veoh TV file sharing?

I was snooping around on my fourteen y/o sons computer the other day and noticed he has Veoh TV installed.

Since I have never heard of it I was wondering if it is some sort of file sharing network? From what I could tell its not but I want to be sure its not because I don't want him using anything like that. I also found limewire and feel as though this limewire program should also be removed so the temptation to download pirated media is'nt present.

Also, is there a way to block my son's attempts at downloading and installing these file sharing networks?

I have asked and hounded him to stop but he thinks that he won't get caught downloading music, all his peers use it he says. Ha! My research shows that people do get caught and the fines are more than I want to deal with. Plus its just not right to steal media. This is what I'm trying to instill into him, just because its there does not mean its O.K. to take.

Veoh is legit. More of a youTube type thing.

Take your son to a lawyer for some $200 piracy advise.

IF he has limewire on his pc I would be willing to bet he is using it.

I would also be willing to bet his pc is full of spyware and other nasties that come with all the "free" stuff... you get what you pay for when you are dealing with those kinds of sharing sites, not just the music is shared.

Tell him to go to www.garageband.com he can get free legit music there that the bands themselves provide in an effort to get more public recognition.

If you download OpenOffice using a torrent seed from their site, I doubt you'd run into problems. They should have an md5 checksum so that you can check if it's been tampered with. (And btw, you might want to use LibreOffice, a fork of Open Office, which is under much more active development. The last stable release of OO was four years ago, whereas LibreOffice's was 10 days ago.) But a lot of free software now tries to sneak in extra baloney as, how else are they going to make any money. But If you don't choose "skip", whatever, you end up getting it, so to speak. Just last night I updated FileMenuTools - which is a really great set of utilities available via right click, but I'll be damned if I didn't have to say No to six different attempts to install "extra" software. Here is the obnoxious TV in my husband's home theater room. He's actually selling it to make room for an even more obnoxious one. Men! The drapes in there are light-blocking, so we don't _normally_ stare back at ourselves... just during photo ops I guess. :P Sorry for the miss, I'm in the middle of redecorating in there and obviously not done! I don't have pics handy of the other TVs, but the TV in the great room is on a wooden corner stand. TV in the home office is a wall-mounted flat screen above a lateral filing cabinet. TV in the master bedroom is sitting on top of an armoire (used to be in, but we needed the space). The others are in our storage room because DH is reticent to part with them, even though they're unused...

I'm sorry jstogner, but you obviously don't know what you're talking about. And your not in the industry. First, TVs have become a commodity in our industry and there is very little money to be made on ANY brand (literally 5%-10% in with a very rare exception on the pro models and ultra large 85" and over displays)... in fact, I would make bit more if I chose to deal with Sony. The fact is, we only provide displays as part of a larger system, and that is mainly as a courtesy to our clients, so we can provide top notch service and keep the entire project within our control. As well as providing warranty support. Many AV Companies have stopped dealing with TV's altogether and just let the customer source their own, but that's not our business model. I stopped dealing with Sony for the above mentioned reasons. Very poor customer service and product lacking reliability. (BTW.. if you want to see something funny, go to youtube and search "Sony POS" for a video by the Onion. Hilarious and true) Also, Sony has a large presence here in San Diego with many of their offices within miles of mine. Many of my clients have friends in the upper management there. Needless to say the word got up to them that I wouldn't install Sony and they reached out to me. I told them point blank my reasons. They were aware and said they've tried to fix it. That was several years ago. Then recently (about 9 months ago) I met the VP of sales(one of them anyway) and that's when I was told that they are pulling out of consumer electronics for the most part and going for a more high end product and commercial... and that literally with the downturn in the economy a while back, the playstation was the only thing that kept them going... Thank you Elmer. The most frustration I had with Comcast was when they had a help desk and would not, could not help me....didn’t know anything about port numbers and shared nothing with Microsoft and visa versa. Hung up in the middle of working with me. They had no skills to help me. They were so bad with computer stuff that I wrote to the New York Times and they ran the letter for 3 days so everyone could vent. A person high up intervened and called me and said I would never have to take the abuse again. He assigned me to the Regional Manager who sent someone out right away. Before that, I was given recording boxes three or four a week that broke down within an hour and had the previous users recordings still on it. That was how our local Comcast manager operated. Honestly a homeless person delivered the box off the back of a truck and swapped out one he had just picked up from another home. I would have to take off work etc. The article in the NYT got me help. Comcast, back before you started with them, saved lots of money and outsourcing to different countries helped. Some of those folks in India were far better educated than in America and stuck with the problem.. Now I can say that this television that lasted 4 1/2 years never had one blip no matter what kind of hurricane we had here and perhaps that has some thing to do with Comcast. There are people who live other places 7 min away in a different county not too far away who hate Comcast and have a chance to get another service and will because their service is out all the time. In my building we have a 2nd generator if that means anything. Life goes on - it was very good to talk to everyone. There is so much to keep in mind I learned a lot Thank you

Ravencajun, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check that out.

One of the main reasons I log on to his computer is to "clean" the system up and make sure he knows I use it every so often.

As for the limewire, I know he has used it. I'm trying to discourage him in a nice way before I have to force it away.
You see its hard for him to give it up when all his friends are using it without any supervision. Because I won't I'm the badguy. I actually intervene the best I can and like to know what he's up to on the net.
I don't have a problem with kids online I just think they need to be aware of all the garbage on it. And all these so called "free" software packages could really get some unknowing kid in some real trouble. Does limewire know how much money is involved in a piracy case? I'm sure the caught individual had know idea that they were being watched.

I despise limewire because of all the trash on it as well as legit torrent etc. I opened it up myself and and searched songs and in the mix is porn and other stuff I don't want my kids seeing.

I feel for you Neal, I have 2 grandsons older than your boy and some of the stuff they think is 'normal' frightens the bejabbers out of me LOL.

Forcing him to remove Limewire might just make him visit friends more often, taking his blank CDs with him. You don't really want that, you seem to have a dialogue with him which is great. At least you are honest with him and let him know you visit his machine for regular maintenance, hopefully he does not object to that.

Regarding technology it can generally be assumed that most teens are smarter than their parents. Anything they do not know they can soon learn from the 'knowledge base' at school whereas the lone parent/s has/ve no such support. You could always suggest that perhaps bringing his computer into the living room might be a wise move. Removing Limewire would sure beat that kind of penalty.

Thats a good article but not what I want to show my son. I want to scare him into thinking he could be next. I realize though that these companys could be infringing on peoples right to privacy.

I just don't understand why limewire even exist? Is anything on lime/frostwire legal then? Is file sharing gone too far?

Limewire/Frostwire exist because people use it...simple as that.
Limewire/Frostwire are not music storage sites..they are conduits to computers containig files..the illegality, in some countries, is in the sharing.
There are many countries that don't consider file sharing illegal...meaning the artists have no legal recourse.
