SuperAntiSpyware Updating

Hi,

I recently tried to update SuperAntiSpyware but the "check for updates" option didn't work. I got an error saying the firewall might be preventing it. Never happened before. I disabled the firewall temporarily and tried again and... nothing.

So, I went to the site to download manually -- core and trace definitions. When I went to extract them to the relevant folder I was told it already contained a processlist of the same name and did I want to replace it. Do I ? If not, how do I get the new def. file into the proper place without problems ?

Yes you want to replace the older file with thew newer file that contains the updated definitions. Failing that if you are concerned simply remove the program and re-install remembering to seek updates as soon as you have completed the install

owbist is absolutely correct. Sometimes a program can get corrupted or a file in it gets corrupted and in those cases it is usually best to just do an uninstall/delete from add remove of the program and then just go download and install it fresh then try to do the updates. I have been using superantispyware for quite some time now and never seen that happen. Do you have your firewall set to allow superantispyware to access the internet? I would go into the settings and make sure you have that set to allow. Mine is set to allow so it never has to ask permission for that program.

there is a difference between windows messenger and msn messenger, I would guess what you have a user name and password for is the msn messenger. Windows messenger is nothing but trouble and I always do what zep said and disable it on every pc, it has proved to be a security risk in the past. Do you by any chance use msn as your ISP or use msn browser or anything to do with msn? If so it will have that msn messenger icon down there along with the butterfly, the IM messenger part is a part of msn and unfortunately stays there even when turned off.

", I'm having a problem with the iPad, email is locked." some antivirus software makes you answer everytime you open a program this usually get less frustrating over time, since you will give it permission for each program you use. after a few days, you usually use most of them, and it stops asking. I am tinking this may be why your email is "locked" you either answered NO for it, or, for some other reason it isnt giving your email permissions to open. You may have to go into the antivirus menu/settings people always forget to do that.

thanks everybody for your input. i installed super anti-spyware, updated it, and did a whole computer scan that resulted in no malware. thus, i disabled link scanner, resident shield, automatic update manager, and the e-mail scanner in AVG 8.0 and noticed a marked difference in the speed of the computer. i tried letting resident shield be active, but that still caused my computer to run rather slowly. it seems that the new AVG is quite a bit of trouble with its functions are inferring with spybot s&d and spyware blaster. as of now, only the anti-virus; anti-spyware, and the license components of AVG are 'active' on my computer; therefore, my questions become: is it necessary to have AVG running from start-up? since i've disabled the resident shield, will having AVG running in the background provide me with some automatic, subtle protection? i currently have win patrol, zone alarm (and AVG) running in the background. should i have super anti-spyware running in the background as well? thanks for all your input.

Thanks to both for your comments. Being on dial-up, I'll just replace the files as the program requested and see if that works before I go the route of uninstalling/re-installing.

I forgot to add: I've never had a problem downloading updates before, so I don't think my firewall is the problem. From what I can see it (Kerio Personal Firewall Free edition) is not blocking SuperAntiSpyware. As it happens, though, I just found out there's a newer version of the firewall, which I'm now (sloooowwlllly) downloading. Maybe it will be more cooperative. :-)
