OMG An Olympian has been killed in a terrible accident

I just can't believe it. How horrible for him, his team, his family and his country.

A competitor in the Luge was killed when he lost control of his sled and hit a pole. It has been said this run was one of the fastest ever. Have we gone to far with our constant pushing of the envelope?

I'm sick about this. Mostly for this young athlete and his family but this will surely put a terrible pall over the opening ceremonies and the games.

I just read that on the internet. I am totally shocked. How very awful to lose this young man and what a heartbreak for his family.

As you said, Sharon, it will cast a pall over the games, and surely tonight's opening ceremony.

This, along with the lack of snow and the rain, is not getting these games off to a good start. The weather doesn;t matter, but I hope all the athletes remain safe.

WOW....I got back from our little trip late Tues. night and I couldn't believe all the responses and concern here. Rose lovers really are the nicest people in the world! THANK YOU everyone for your words of advise and concern. I posted my "accident" story because I thought it was kind of funny how I was more worried about my roses than myself and thought I'd share what a rose-nut I have become. I didn't expect so many people to be so concerned & caring. You guys are the BEST! So here's an update.... we went on our little trip as planned. It was very painful to walk or stand (or bend my leg) but I was determined to enjoy our well-deserved & long-awaited 4 days off. People stared at me and then at DH everywhere we went because of the bruises, scraped arms & legs, scratches, etc....I looked like a battered wife or like I had a fight with a mountain lion...LOL. My son and his wife (newlyweds) joined us so it was fun spending time with them. I am still sore and I have a massive bruise that covers the entire outer side of my thigh but I am on the mend. We did quite a lot of standing & walking on our trip which was painful but maybe that was a good thing that I kept moving. I'm a pretty tough chick. My rose-thorn puncture wounds are healing as are the scraped arms and legs. I wanted to share some pictures from our trip. As luck would have it, after weeks of dry weather it rained much of the time. But we enjoyed ourselves anyways and were glad for the rain that our roses desperately needed. We have been to Newport, Rhode Island many times before to visit the Mansions (we have a membership) but this was our first visit to the Green Animals Topiary Garden. Here are few shots from there....these were taken in the pouring rain but the garden was still lovely. Irishdancers, I'm so very sorry for the loss of your daughter-in-law. That's another one of those things that just seems so crazy. No matter how hard you try, you just can't make it make sense. You will drive yourself crazy trying to understand why it happened. After the past six weeks, and thinking about it so much, I can only tell you there is no answer. Even if we knew the answer, it wouldn't be good enough. What possible good answer could there be for children to lose their parent? As far as anger, my pastor told me when Ricky passed, that I would have doubt, fear, guilt, anger, etc. and that it's o.k. God knows your heart. He wouldn't have given us all of these emotions if we weren't supposed to have them. My husband was 45, close to your dil's age. I don't know if your son frequents the internet or not, but I've gotten a lot of solace from a site, Widownet. As a matter of fact, I've been amazed at the number of people who have lost their spouses suddenly. I mean, you know death happens all of the time, but you really can't relate until it happens to you. I remember being at the 2 wk point. I was still in shock I think that it had even happened. I had to convince myself every morning that it really did happen. I just couldn't believe that he wasn't still somewhere on this Earth, that he wouldn't come through that door at any minute. I am so sorry for your family. I know this has been the hardest thing I've ever had to go through and I will be praying for you all to have a peace about things. Stargazer: OMG, what an experience. i'm so glad it wasn't your leg. we can be thankful for some things even in the face of disasters, can't we? i know we have to be careful of doctors; they're not all the brightest stars in the sky. i have a friend who had a melanoma removed from his back two years ago. after having it checked every two months for two years he got a clean bill of health on nov. 4 and was told, "you're doing fine." two weeks later his son saw him without his shirt on, and took him straight to another doctor, who told him he had terminal cancer. he now has only days left. so be careful, but do try to be optimistic. your attitude can help you change things one way or another, I think. please let us know what the x-rays say. Lucy: "one block from the ocean and beach, plus being dead centre of a tiny town on an island attached by a causeway!" areyou kidding me? this sounds great! i happen to LOVE old houses. after i became single i bought an old house (1929) in the nicest part of town. six years later i sold it the first day and made $160,000 profit. that let me pay cash for the next one and i made $$75,00 on it. the older houses are, by far, better built IMO. but the best part is that they have so much more character. I love the furniture you've picked out. It will look bright and cheery and just the feeling of the inspiration pics you've posted in your other threads...once you paint! Paint the darn room already! :) My last house had muddy mauve and no natural light (houses on three sides and a big porch on the other). As soon as I painted, it changed everything. Even my mood was better. And if you have a front porch, I suggest you paint the porch ceiling blue. It made a big difference looking out my window and seeing Martha Stewart's Porch Ceiling Blue. Almost as good as being able to see the sky. :) Let your room evolve. Don't feel like it has to be "done" right away. Take your time finding art and accessories that you love. You're doing great and you're going to have a lovely space to enjoy.

Oh no what a terrible tragedy! How very sad for his family and the games.

I was so happy to find live TV coverage in Spanish on Eurosport and have been watching the qualifying ski jumps but that accident has not yet been mentioned.

So sorry to hear the bad news.

Just saw a press conference and John Furlong is beside himself, he was so emotional. I can't imagine how he will manage his opening speech tonight. He is so totally devastated with what has happened.

Then again I know the Canadian spirit and I know the spirit of these amazing athletes and they will manage through it. Maybe even stronger in the end.

How tragic this is on so many levels.

This is so sad. The article said
"It has led to quite a few athletes crashing during practice runs, and that include the gold-medal favorite from Italy (Armin Zoeggeler). "

I'm wondering if this is a fairly new track that has not yet stood the test of time, or if it is just that these athletes are taken unawares by the speed. I'm sure we'll be hearing the details of this over the next few days.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I love the Olympics and hope that the rest of the games continue without further incident.

Nathan is in Vancouver now and is supposed to see luge and biathalon tomorrow.

I saw it too, how sad for his family, his team, his country and the Olympic in general.

I too wonder if we are pushing the envelope too hard, there were other crashes on that course and the speed was incredible.

I'm not particularly interested in the Olympics but something like this gets everyone's attention, not just those who watch the sports.

This is really sad and shocking news. I'm just hearing it on our local news. My heart goes out to his family and to everyone who had ties to him.

I read the headline earlier, but was at work, so didn't have time to read the story. Saw it on the news tonight, tho...how tragic and unnecessary.

Yes, I wonder if we are sacrificing too much in the quest for the gold, or silver or bronze. Or perfection.

My heart aches for this young man's family.

I heard it on the radio on my way home from work. Horible and tragic for the family, games, and all the athletes.

I watched a show on the History Channel last night that featured all the prep and contruction for the games. I think the track in a couple of years old and hosted the World Cup. It is known for being a very fast track for sure. Great show if you can catch a rerun.

One thing you would not catch me on is that new gondola they built. The tallest and longest in the world. Amazing contruction but I'll pass on that ride.

I have to add that I was SHOCKED that they showed film of the accident on the evening news tonight. Just made me sick and cofirms my not so good opinion of the news media.... I really feel for the family and their country.

I too was offended that they showed the film on the news. COmpletely unnecessary IMO. And yes, my heart goes out to the poor guys family.....

It's a terrible blow to the start of the olympics, this young man's life taken because of a quest for speed, I hope it enables changes in the future; I managed to avoid seeing the news coverage , I also hope they stop running the footage, it's disrespectful to his family, imo.

I agree. It was a horrifying sight. However, since it had already been telecast, I am sure it was bound to show up all over the internet. Nevertheless, people could choose whether or not to look at it. Our newscasters warned people that it would be difficult to watch, but I still think it should not have been shown.

Between this accident and the malfunctions in the opening ceremony, these Olympics are getting off to a bad start. I sincerely hope the rest of the games go smoothly and it is successful.

Write and complain! Media is a cutthroat business, especially now. It was surely a calculated decision for ratings at the lowest common denominator. I don't have TV for just this reason. Well, actutually I do have TV but only get the infomercial channel, a religious channel and PBS. I get my news via the Internet.
