From Vist to XP Question

I have a friend whose XP computer crashed and she got a new computer with Vista. She sends out a weekly newsletter and I got it this morning (I have XP). Her newsletters are cute and informative and have lots of clipart in them. The one I got this morning came through with the boxes with red x's in them. Is she doing something wrong....am "I" doing something wrong...or is it a from Vista to XP problem. I do have one other friend with Vista and I get gifs from her, but she has never sent me any clipart.

I can't think what she could be doing wrong for this to happen..she's been sending these letters just fine for a long time...could it be my computer? I'm at a loss here...

It may depend on what program she is using to make the newsletter and inserting the clipart.
I know that if Microsoft Office Word 2007 is used and NOT saved as a Word 97-2003 document, it will not open for people, unless they have 2007.

I have found Office 2007 saves docs as .docx so if those with Office 2000 and 2003 want to be able to access those they need to download a free patch from Microsoft. As far as I know there is no patch for Office 97, could be wrong on that point.

Of course if those with Office 2007 do as Randy suggests and save in the older format that will not be an issue.

You're currently under the 2006 International Code. I don't believe this is on-line anywhere. Try your local reference library. However, Building Science Corp.s recommendations are usually made with reference to existing Codes. Specifically, here's what they say about foam insulation in basements. A new neighbor says I need to leave space between the XPS and framing (and perhaps should have left space between the XPS and drywall) OR should have plastic in between. Unless your new neighbour has a Ph.d in building science, I'll stick with Dr. Joe's recommendations! Because everyone lives in a house, everyone thinks they're an expert. However, you are right that the local inspector might insist on a 6mil barrier to the warm side of the fg. I've been required to do that on two installations--XPS on the foundation, fg between the studs. Building Science says it's unnecessary but is of no harmful effect. If some inspector says you have to tear off the drywall to put in the unnecessary barrier, you can still appeal to a supervisor in a pleasant manner, using Building Science materials. Remember, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I see you're a sociable guy. But sometimes it's best to leave the chats to on-line! Good luck.

Make life easier?? - forget it! As far as the new Word, I hate it. I've used Word for years and the new format takes me forever to remember where the common tools are. My office computer has Word 03 which I have no problem with. My home machine is 07 and I get so upset each time I have to use it. I still haven't found 'insert'. Nothing is where it was. What is annoying is trying to type up a letter quickly on 07, and spending more time trying to find the tools than it took to type the letter. Working with both versions each day drives me crazy. I use Notepad and when I go to save, it always saves as a txt. I do as Minnie and paste it to a Word document if I need to send it. I rarely do. I just use Notepad for a quick paste of something from the internet like a recipe. Jane

Perhaps if you had an extremely ridiculous amount of icons on the Desktop it would effect your startup. However, in general they are of little concern. The main negative would be the active applications they could represent. These applications are the ones being initialized during startup and are all-too-often not needed as they can easily be accessed on-demand through the Start Menu. It seems today every time you install an application it wants to install a Desktop icon, a Quick Launch icon and a Start menu entry. This for the average user is over kill. Personally I have only four on my Desktop and two are pointed to the Recycle Bin and one I created for Windows Explorer. On my Quick Launch I have Windows Mail, Firefox and IE8. Everything else I can readily access from the Start Menu, and I like looking at my grandchildren a lot better than DT clutter. DA

There are a lot of unknowns for third party software as far as running on Vista is concerned. If the Newsletter was created using a third party program, it may have problems with some functions, e.g., clip art. I don't know this is the specific problem, but offer as something to check.

I have a 6 month old Dell desk top that was sold as upgradeable to Vista, and I got my free upgrade ($10 S&H) to Vista. The package from Dell includes a CD (DVD) called Upgrade assistant, and the paperwork warns of many pitfalls, just like the "funny" skit we see on television where two guys, one a PC one a MAC talk about all the complexities of running MS Software...while produced to sell MAC, it isn't far off the mark, I think.
