Two part questions re: Windows XP.

I have Windows XP on my computer. For the past several weeks the icons on my desktop occasionally change although I have done nothing to choose new icons. What causes this?

Also, I understand having many shortcuts on the desktop slows the computer's functioning. How much does each shortcut drain from the computer's efficiency? Does it apply only to the lenght of time it takes to boot up?

I think the many shortcuts on the desktop would only affect the bootup time.

But having the icons change on their own is not normal. What programs do you run for antivirus and other antimalware? I would run a scan using Malwarebytes and have it remove anything it finds. You can also run SuperAntiSpyware and do the same. Run the complete scan, not the quick scan. Be sure that both programs are updated before scanning. Both are free for use.

You might try right clicking on the desktop...going to properties...selecting appearance.... changing size of Icons to large.

It would be to your advantage to keep on the desktop only those icons that are frequently used. Put the others in a separate folder on the desktop so you'll have easy access to them when needed. Just right-click the desktop--create a new folder--give it a name--and drag the seldom used icons into it.

Too soon, too late! I have never found the perfect time to clear my beds of blown in clutter. I sometimes end up damaging some of the eyes of early hosta while others nothing happens to them when I rake the beds. My neighbor and I share a huge hosta bed on the lot line and last year we left all the clutter on the bed and we found no difference in slug damage. The bed is made up of mostly older types of hostas so that might make some difference. I just looked out the window at the bed and probably all we will do is pull the scapes that are still standing this spring. This will be the second year of doing this so there might be a great difference and we will again have to completely clear the bed. Only time will tell but if we see a huge difference in the slug population we'll spray the ammonia/water solution on the bed. We hope things stay the same as last year as it sure saves us time and energy. Connie

Just a few comments. Fireblocking See Diagram below from Fairfax County Virginia based on the 2009 International Residential Code. Keep the fibrous insulation out of that narrow gap between the outermost joist. Just use fireblocking to cover the space up once you've got in the insulation. Shiplap joints really don't need any more sealants. If you want, though, one is enough. Tyvek tape is fine. I always mention Tuck brand as it's the predominant brand in my area. Concrete screws and fender washers Leave them in place. Some municipalities require a mechanical attachment. Instead of using several screws per board, you might be able to run a couple of long 1x2s across a whole wall to press the XPS tight to the concrete. Baseplates I like the XPS under the baseplates for two reasons: 1) it keeps the wood away from any minor floods you might have; 2) it acts as a thermal break between the cold concrete floor and the framing. How close around electrical panels can I install the XPS? I usually frame around the panels and put a door on the resulting box. Then you can bring the insulation tight against the wood.

Linda, ALL auctions that I attend are open to ALL buyers. There is no such thing (at least in the eastern states)as a distinct "collector's sale", nor are there "trade only" sales. Taking this from the auctioneer's perspective-the goal is to maximise the hammer price of each lot that crosses the block. This benefits both auction and consignor. Therefore, closing sales to the public (collectors) contraindicates that goal. Perhaps there may be a few places local to you that require a dealer to have a tax ID or license of some sort in order to attend but that is not the practice here. Is the Harris auction a dealer only auction? I didn't see any restrictions in a quick perusal of the site. In this area, if trade attends sales, trade does so in order to buy specific items for specific clients, or hopes that something 'slips through the cracks' so that it may be purchased for later retail sale. Unfortunately most things are greedily grabbed by clients with very deep pockets! It's no secret that many in the gallery and most of the telephone bids are trade bidding on behalf of these clients. I looked up the Gene Harris-got Tom Harris, presumably that's the son who took over? I used to go to sales like this but never, ever found one single thing that I would retail; although there have been two or three objects within my specialty, these were so tatty that I couldn't be bothered. I rarely buy 'projects'. I have one object sitting in my house that needs only a re-gluing and re-set of its tripod base (minor repair and not considered attrition). I have had this object since the end of March and haven't got the job done yet. All it takes is a telephone call. Just so you know why I can't buy projects! We often fall into inventory just by word of mouth, mostly through our networks. I really prefer buying from and selling to trade, although margins are slimmer it's enormously fun. But oh my I do love the axcitement of an auction. Hehe, now I sortakinda know where you are! You must come east, ma'am, and let me take you round with me. You'd have a blast and would probably be the 'belle of the ball'. But then, in return, you'd have to haul me around all the good places in your region.

Support has been, or will be dropped for all versions of XP except for service pack 3. However, XP remains my favorite windows version. My wife moved to Vista on her laptop and hated it. She now has Windows 7 and says it is an improvement over Vista. Some day, I plan to move to Windows 7 and skip Vista. This requires a complete clean out of the system - reformat of the disk. I dread that move, and expect some applications and hardware will no longer be compatible. If certain applications become incompatible, I'll resist the move as long as I can. These would be applications that are too expensive for me as a retiree to replace. I have an old finite element analysis program that is no longer compatible. To buy a new version is $16,000 the last time I priced it, so that will not be done unless I land a consulting job that needs it and can pay for it - not likely in my remaining life. If you are having difficulty in finding your pictures, use the "Find" command to search your hard drive. If your disk has been subdivided into logical drives, you may have to search each logical drive. The find comamnd does not need the entire name of the file to find it, just part of the name will do. It will, of course, list all files matching the same fragment. For example, if you searched for all occurences of *.jpg, you'll get every file having extension " jpg", not necessarily an efficent thing to do. Suppose you have the followiong files: 1998 Joey 1.tif 1998 Joey 2.jpg 2000 Joey 1.doc You could locate all these files by searching on "joey" and very likely would not get many extraenous hits. File names that contined the string, joey, would also appear such as jumpjoey.tif . Recommendation: In the future, create folders with meaningful names in which to store your images. That way, you'll know where they are. Folder names such as: Vacation Jun 2000 Year 2001 pic Year 2002 pic 110Canon 111Canon are examples. Tip: Its a good idea when you set up a new computer to set aside a data drive for documnets and images. If you have one hard drive, a logical drive could be created on it. You would have 2 logical drives: one for the system files and the other for your personal files. I have 2 physical hard drives in my computer which becomes a natural thing to do. This separates your data from the system and application disk, and makes for more efficient use fo the "Find" command. On first pass, you need to search only the data drive, and if not found there, search the other drives. System and application files are humungous these days and requires much needless search time.

I do not allow any icons on my desktop, I removed the check mark to clear them and this creates a pop up near the clock similar to the Quick Launch bar beside the Start button. Then it is a simple task to click the chevrons near the clock then click the needed program in the pop up.

No advantage of course other than keeping the desktop looking better and allowing the selected photo so show clearly.

Grandms--I have Norton 360 and it says I am fine. If I download Malwaerbytes will it conflict with Norton?

Mine do that but not often and they move on me. Often it is after a download. The last time I had a change my games were all reset to no saved games. I just assumed "that's a computer for you". I have protection that is recommended on this site and I keep it all updated and run it every couple of weeks. Everything comes up clean so far.

Perhaps if you had an extremely ridiculous amount of icons on the Desktop it would effect your startup. However, in general they are of little concern. The main negative would be the active applications they could represent. These applications are the ones being initialized during startup and are all-too-often not needed as they can easily be accessed on-demand through the Start Menu.

It seems today every time you install an application it wants to install a Desktop icon, a Quick Launch icon and a Start menu entry. This for the average user is over kill.

Personally I have only four on my Desktop and two are pointed to the Recycle Bin and one I created for Windows Explorer. On my Quick Launch I have Windows Mail, Firefox and IE8. Everything else I can readily access from the Start Menu, and I like looking at my grandchildren a lot better than DT clutter.

I also like the clean look. I only have 3 icons, documents, computer and recycle. I have changed those to small flowers.

Duh? Should have read, "Personally I have only four on my Desktop with one of them pointed to the Recycle Bin, and another I created for Windows Explorer." That's what happens when you try to eat, think, and post at the same time.

malwarebytes is fine to run along with your current norton, it is a stand alone scanner so only works when you activate it, it is an excellent product and will catch many things your norton will miss.
