Service Pack 3 for xp on cd question

We're on dial-up, so I'm ordering the SP3 on a cd

Does anyeone know if I have to buy a cd for each PC I want to use it on (we have two), or will I be able to re-use the one I've ordered?

Once you have the CD with SP3 on it is good for any computer with a valid version of XP on. The CD will run a short test to confirm the validity of the current XP version then proceed with the install.

It took 19 days before I received my Service Pk 3 CD
after I placed my order.

ccleaner and ATF are both very good legit programs however you can over do things, and with ccleaner there is the possibility to mess with the registry which I never ever advise. As stated if you use it in the default setting and only use the cleaner feature you are ok but daily use is over kill for sure. ATF is not as big a risk since it does not have the registry cleaner feature so it is the one I more often suggest using. In the old versions of windows defrag and clean up were pretty important in the new versions much of that is automated and extra work is not nearly as essential. what I would suggest one spend more time on is making sure all the essentials are updated because these days so many infections are coming in through holes in some of these apps. So use the secuina tool every few weeks or so and make sure you stay fully updated. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) and running a malwarebytes scan every few weeks (update it first) is a definite. Plus if you do not have spywareblaster in my book it is a must have, no scans to do just update it once a week then hit enable all protection so the shield is green and it sits there protecting you. Ouch, I'm still running SP3 on a Gateway Notebook and a Dell desk top (2007 model) and have no problems. I'm thinking of also updating an HP Notebook, but wait as I continue to read about SP3 problems. My Gateway, most used by me, has AVG 7.5, the AVG AntiSpy, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and SuperAntiSpy.. and I haven't detected any problems, albeit when I run the anti spyware programs they usually find some bad guys....which I delete and go on my way. I'll take a read of the link provided above when I get some time.

Jane no doubt it will be an Apple commercial if it is not already! I saw one last night that could have been about this reboot over and over situation, have to admit those commercials are funny. IF you have your computers fully updated with all the windows updates and you do not want to tackle this now you do not have to (totally up to you), this is not a super critical update like sp2 was, it is rated moderate. There are some additional changes it makes to the system itself which microsoft would like people to install. But I know a lot of people have decided to at least wait some time to see if there might be some hotfixes that come out to handle some of the issues that are cropping up and there has been discussion in the microsoft forums that this time they may actually put out a hotfix for some of the problems prior to pushing out sp3 in auto update. So waiting is not a bad idea at this point. I would suggest though that you uninstall your IE 7 through add remove before you do install sp3, because if you do not you will not be able to do so at any time in the future and it also affects the ability to try to do fixes on IE7 should they be needed. You can just take it out, put in sp3 when you decide to, then put IE7 back. Or just stay as you are and continue getting your other regular critical windows updates. It is your choice. At this point in time they will not stop you from getting your windows updates just because you do not have sp3, so don't be concerned about that.

I have dial-up service and because of this, SP3 came into my computer during several sessions of being on-line. My copy of SP3 greatly fouled my computer. The installer stopped when near the end of the install and left a MESS. I tried to uninstall, but that did not work. I tried to use the 'file repair' option on my original Windows XP disc. It refused to do this - said that I was trying to load files from an older version to a newer one. LOL. Parts of my system barely worked. Much of it was trashed. A session with a MicroSoft IT person did not work (although he was very accomodating). I recovered by going to my favorite computer service & store and purchased an OEM disc of XP with SP3. This installed ok. (This fix cost me the purchase price of XP, but that was better than loosing all my old email files containing genealogical data.) After my computer was up and running with XP with SP3, I found that all the installed aoftware was no longer registered. All my applications had to be re-installed. I had to reinstall ThunderBird and all of its settings were lost. These had to be re-entered to get it working again. All the modem/internet connection settings had been lost. These had to be set up again. I was not happy, in fact, I was very preturbed before it was all over. Fortunatley, I did get back all my emails because I had a backup copy on an enternal hard drive. I have no idea what went wrong - I suppose the interrupted downloaded file had errors, or its installer was bad. Supposedly, this download was supposed to support interruptions.

Thanks, all. Glad to know I don't have to order two. And I'm in no hurry to get the blasted thing. Once it gets here I've gotta attempt to install it, and that makes me so crazy I just wish computers were never invented!!!!

microsoft has finally put out several hotfixes for some of those problems that cropped up with sp3 so be absolutely sure you go to the actual windows update page let it scan your pc select custom so you only get the critical updates, install all the updates (except sp3 of course). One is the hotfix for the AMD processors issue, one is the hotfix for the conflict with some antivirus programs, etc, they say in the description they are to be installed prior to sp3. Do all the critical updates it gives you for your system prior to the sp3 install and you will have fewer problems.
