Which externally-vented OTR has the best venting?
Comments (3)I think there are a few brands like Viking and Dacor maybe that have 450 CFMs. You'll have to hunt around and check the specs. A problem with OTRs besides the CFMs though is that the capture area generally is not as good as a real vent hood....See MoreOTR Microwave with the best vent
Comments (7)Like you in my Mom's kitchen the best and most convenient location for the microwave was over her smoothtop stove. Hers has 420cfm and is vented to the outside and is much better than her old hood despite the more restricted capture area (it is also quieter). She uses hers quite a bit so this model probably does more than you would need. Item: Genius Prestige Inverter Over-the-Range Stainless Steel Microwave (NNSD297S) Supplier: Brault & Martineau Manufacturer: Panasonic Manufacturing Region: China Specs: 2.0 cu. ft. microwave up to 420 cfm 2 speed fan combines steam, convection and microwave features keep warm menu sensor reheat and cook capabilities 2 hood light settings Cost: $549.99 - Sears Canada Price: $699.99 - suggested US retail price: NA Warranty: 2 Year Limited Notes: - delivery included In situ: Her old countertop model was a Panasonic and was still going 10 years in and she had a freind with this exact model who was particularly happy with the fan....See MoreOTR Microwave Flex Vent
Comments (20)Grrr. So, nobody's happy right now. The rigid elbows & straight piece they bought to replace the flex won't fit in the tight corner that was allowed. GC is not here, but his son & one other worker are. Other worker was working on the rigid and said "no way. It's not going to work, not gonna fit." I've tried really hard to not bring stuff up w/ GC in the presence of the others, or to criticize GC to the others in any way, but this time, I said "the flex is not to code" (which I did find out) "due to a potential fire hazard." I don't know what they're going to do. Worker is (I think) on the phone w/ GC right now - out of earshot....See MoreOTR Microwave Flex Vent (cross post from Kitchens)
Comments (5)I can't see what is inside this flex vent, but asserting lack of elbows as an advantage when the duct is obviously elbowed shows a misunderstanding of causes of turbulence generation and resultant pressure loss. (Think of it as friction.) And smooth elbow pressure losses due to turbulence are unlikely to be as bad as the pressure losses due to turbulence generated by all those accordion folds. All that said, we don't know how wimpy the blower is in the microwave oven. If the flow rate (CFM) capability is very low even when dumped into open air, the exhaust duct irregularities will only have a modest effect. The space there looks a little tight from this perspective; perhaps the hole in the wall should have been higher to allow a standard duct shape elbow to work. kas...See Moreaprince
