Gina, I feel for you, but admire you for doing what was right for Sammy. I do foster care for a local shelter and know how hard it can be to move one on to another home when you love them so much. Even when you know you did the right thing it still can hurt.

Aw gee. I've had to re-home a few dogs and it's always hard to do and hard to find the perfect fit. It sounds like you've made a good choice for him. Hugs.

Gina, I really admire you for making the decision to find your friend a home where he'll be happier. I've never experienced having to find a new home for a pet. I'm imagining that it might feel a lot like the breakup of a human relationship. "It's me, not you" type of thing. :) That's always hard but usually for the best.

Oh, Gina, I know you'll miss him, but of course as others have said, you did the right thing. I've known people that had pets that didn't work out for them just take them to to the pound instead of going to the effort to re-home them.

My heart goes out to you that you made this difficult decision. The place he's living now sounds like a place I'd love to live at, and a perfect place for an active dog.

It is so very hard to move them on, but he will be happier. He will be able to do the things he was bred to do.

You are a good furmom and a wise women to realize that he needed a differant enviroment.

And it may not be the right time yet, but there is another Pry out there for you both.

Oh, Gina, I bet you're heartbroken, allright! That would be a very tough call, but I think you did the right thing for Sammy. Sounds like he'll have a wonderful life with his new family. And a girlfriend? What more could a boy-dog ask for?

I'm sorry to hear it Gina. A friend just got his third Pyr - his second girl. His first was a boy and he said he was too hard to handle. I know they are one of the most independent breeds. Do you have any others at home now? Or was Sammy the only child?

Aw, Gina, I'm so sorry . . . but I'm sure Sammy will be very happy . . . a new job AND a girlfriend to go with it! Will you get another Pyr or another breed?

Our beloved Golden was Sammy, too, and my heart still aches after more than a year. We'll be getting a GR puppy when we get settled in the new house . . . but till then, my heart is empty.

Gina, I'm so happy to know that you took the time to find Sammy a good home. So many get dumped or taken to shelters where they usually get put down. I know you are missing him even though things didn't work out. I'll bet he is doing fine....and a girlfriend to boot!

Gina, I'll bet you are tempted to visit Sammy. I know it was had to do the best for Sammy at the expense of your heart.

They are such beautiful dogs. I came across a picture of our precious Chowder Mae last weekend. It's been 15 years since she went to the Rainbow Bridge and I still tear up. I framed the picture and put it out. Probably not a good idea!

Thank you all so much for all your kind thoughts and words. We got a call from the people who have Sammy and they said he is doing really well! THat helped a lot. They said he and Molly are becoming inseperable and they are doing really well with the goats. In my heart I believe that is what he was bred to do! It doesn't make the pain any less though! Sammy was our 4th Pry. We had Cody for 10 yrs. before he went to Rainbow Bridge in 04 with cancer. We went to a very very reputable Pry breeder shortly after that and brought Jax into our home. he was a beauty, but at about 18 months he became very sick with a disease called diabetes inspipedus (?sp.) We had to put him down because the medication was no longer working and he was getting sicker and sicker. And then we brought Sammy into our family, so this is really hard! I know we will get another dog at some point, but we are taking a break for now! Alhough we are both starting to talk about it again! A friend of my husbands told him that once you've had a Great Pryennes you'll always want one....I just don't know!!!

Gina, I am glad you have heard that Sammy is doing well, and I hope this eased the pain even a little.

We had a husky mix, K.C., one time that we put at DH's dad's ranch while we were in the middle of a move. Once we brought him home, he was unhappy, you could tell. So, reluctantly, we took him back to the ranch to live.

So, my thoughts are with you.

Gina my heart goes out to you too..... I have not posted this before since it is such a difficult topic, but since you did (and since I posted about the new cat in our home), well... here goes.

A few people on the Furball thread asked how Diva is adjusting to the new cat. Thruth be known, we had to return Diva to the breeder just before Thanksgiving. She was also developing agression issues, not towards my family, but towards anyone else who came into the house. I was the only one she would listen to, and though she was very obedient with me (and with the family when we were home alone) she became untrustworthy when my kids had friends over and needed to be crated constantly when there were other kids in the house. I believe she was being protective of my kids, but I could not take the chance she would hurt one of their friends. The straw that broke the camels back was when she was in the garage with DH and a neighbors pre-schooler rode his Big Wheel down the sidewalk in front of the house. She went tearing out of the garage snarling and growling and scared the daylights out of the kid and his parents. She never touched the kid (he was "just" past our yard) and stopped short of leaving the yard to go after him, but that risk was more than we could take.

I have kept in touch with the breeder and she is VERY happy being back at home with her family - the breeder still has her mom, dad, and 2 sisters so they are all one big happy family again. However, the breeder hasn't decided if she will let her leave again to another home, it seems Diva has taken her over-protective attitudes with her and is not friendly around visiting kids there either. Anyway, she is happy being back at her original home and there is a huge weight off my mind knowing my kids friends and the neoghborhood kids are all safe when they come to visit.

Gina, I'm sorry for both you and Alexa. I know that it wasn't easy for you to give up Sammy and Alexa her Diva. Even though it breaks your heart you did the responsible thing.

Alexa I am so very sorry to hear about Diva, it's so hard isn't it? I'm glad that the breeder took her back! One of our stipulations in our contract with Sammy's breeder was that "if anything were to happen what so ever we would return him to them!" Well, we tried and tried to contact them and got absolutely no response. We tried contacting the great Pyr Rescue group and nothing. Maybe it was for the best since Sammy seems to be really happy where he is now and that's all we've wanted for him! Gina

Ohg Gina, I'm sorry. Dad had to do that with Zinger and it nearly broke his heart.

I'm sure Sammy will be fine and happy, I know Zinger is because we check on him every now and then.
