internet connection ?

I use satellite to get on internet and friend uses her

local dial up. She wants to bring her computer here to get all her downloads she needs. Can i or how do i get her computer on the internet here at my house?

The easiest thing, in my opinion, would be to have your friend bring a flash drive, instead of her computer, and download to your computer and put the downloads on her flash drive. Then she can take that home and transfer to her computer.

The trouble with doing what you are asking about is that a computer, unless networked to your system, would have to be "provisioned" by a certified installer to work on your satellite system. That is a no, no. If you, or she, want to spend some time and a little bit of money, purchase a router and network her computer to yours, either using ethernet cables or wirelessly. Your satellite provider probably does not support networking, but it can be easily done if you are careful and follow directions exactly.

I would try to do a Restore. If that doesn't work, does your PC have a built-in Recovery function? Or, do you have Windows CDs? You'll know for next time to never delete anything in the Programs folder. And, the date shown in the default view is the date modified (saved), not date last accessed. Assume that all main operating system files and utilities will have dates that are earlier than the date you bought the computer. Never touch 'em.

I assume that I will have to change my remote id from Comcast back to the remote that originally came with my TV. Are we talking about the remote control for the television? If so, it is the remote that's programmed to work with the TV, not the other way around. Although some "universal" remotes can be iffy with advanced features, so you may be best using the original remote control for the TV. If the TV is Internet enabled and you want to use a wireless connection, then the SSID and password (if security is enabled) must match that of the new router. Of course, you could change the SSID and password of the new router to match the old router. Also I have a second tv upstairs that I would want to also use this wireless connection. Would I just have to buy a second modem/router and use the same software that I would get from AT&T. No. One of the functions of the router is to distribute the Internet connection to computers and devices in your home via wired and/or wireless connections. Again the upstairs TV would need to be programmed to the correct SSID and password. Also I have a second computer about a mile away that I would want to hook up to this same wireless connection also. Again I assume I would just need another modem/router and use the same software once again. That would be problematic. WiFi just doesn't have that kind of range nor could you run a mile long Ethernet cable. You'd likely need a second service from AT&T. I don't know about Earthlink. Most ISP's give you a free email account (or in some cases, multiple accounts) with service. You will need to ask Earthlink what happens to your email account if you discontinue their service. They may allow you to keep the email account active for a small monthly fee. AT&T will give you a free email account with their service as well. You may wish to just migrate or use one of the free services like Gmail or Hotmail and not be tied to the ISP.

Wow $300 difference - something's not right here! I'm not saying not to go with the Blu-ray or media player route, which work work just fine, but there must be some other difference between the two television models. The cost of incorporating the internet capability, along with the added retail premium, is no where near that. There has also been a substantial push from Walmart/Sams Club for product, both television and Blu-ray, to include internet capability since Walmart acquired Vudu a year or so ago. Companies such as Vizio and Funai (licensee of the Philips and Magnavox brands in the US) have definitely been increasing internet capability in their products. This also has been bringing down the added cost. If you'd like to post the brand and model numbers, maybe we could shed some more light on the difference.

Agree there are much better ways of doing it than actually hauling the computer over and trying to hook it up to your connection. Using the flash drive or a USB hard drive or even if your pc has a cd or dvd burner on it, burn it then put them into her cd or dvd and get them off of there, depending on what exactly it is she is wanting.
for example the new sp3 for xp is available in forms that can be burned to a cd and used by many computers rather than each one connecting and downloading. SP2 is actually available from microsoft on cd which can be ordered by mail.

I like to have a good USB hard drive handy anyway to use for backup so buying one is a good investment.

Hold up before promising friends to much. I know that 2 of the major satellite providers have "fair access" policies which restrict how much can be downloaded, either in a single 24 hour period or over a 30-day rolling period. Going over this limit will get you "fapped" ie: you will be downgraded to sub-dialup speeds as punishment for actually using the service you pay dearly for. Fortunately this speed decrease usually only lasts for a day.
If what she needs isn't huge, then I agree that a jump drive is really the way to go... unless they want windows updates... and running those during the day will surely get you a slap on the wrist from your provider!

One of those 2 providers has a "fap free" period where you are allowed to download as much as you want... from 3 to 6am here on the east coast. The answer is yes, I have gotten up at 2:30 in the morning to download files I wanted that would normally have gotten my already horrible speeds reduced further.

I don't se any way to edit posts, just wanted to add a p.s.

I don't mean to give anyone the idea that I am against helping friends, or strangers for that matter. Just wanted the OP to be aware, if they aren't already, that there are strict limitations on usage with satellite internet providers.
