Internet Connected TV

We are thinking of getting a new TV soon. We watch a lot of TV.
We have subscriptions to Hulu+ and Netflix. We have a Roku box.
Not all TV shows are available on Hulu+ on the Roku box.
Some shows are web only thru Hulu+ or web only directly from the website.
Could we watch these web only programs on an internet connected TV?

We watch Dateline and 48 hours on the internet and think of this as fairly routine. [We've a laptop hooked up p a TV screen and all our internet is usually done this way so clicking on a bookmark for Dateline is a little bit easier than OTA. This way one can pause to go to the bathroom, a convenience not offered by OTA.]

There are many, many TV shows on the internet of dubious legality. I amused myself with them until I got a nasty bug and gave it up. Some syndicated shows and MSNBC were fairly reliable but the quality was poor.

ESPN3 and the C-spans seems safe and reliable. Public radio has some good audio only broadcasts.

I do have a cap on my ISP plan, so I will definitely have to monitor it. I talked to a rep about the next higher plan and she said I would probably go over the cap even with changing to it unless I monitored it. I will only be watching TV shows though so it won't be as bad as watching whole movies, but I am able to check the usage daily. I live in a very rural part of the state with not many options. I have a question though about running a line from my router to my TV? I don't run a line from the PC to the TV, but from the router? When I replace my 5 yr old TV with the new wi fi cabable TV, I'm going to move that TV into the room where my PC is. It does have a plug in for PC. So I run a line to the router? I'm going to check on one of those hocky puck Roku things. Many years ago I had a Zenith product that enabled me to watch the same program as a TV in another room. We had Dish or Dirct at the time and it saved us having to get an additional receiver. Sounds like this might do the same thing?

Apple TV is a digital media player, or receiver, for internet streaming of video and audio media, as well as local area network playback. Basically the same as Roku, or several other of the media players now built into most Blu-Ray DVD players and internet connected televisions. Quite frankly, it has never been known as one of Apple's more successful products. Media players require two prerequisites to be successful: ability to provide high quality display of various files and streaming formats, and access to content and service providers of program material that people really want to watch.

If the picture is scrambled you probably have a trap on your line that blocks the TV signal. I've had Comcast internet in several locations and they have done this to me once. Sometimes the installer puts it on, sometimes they don't. Short of removing the trap if you have access to the outside box, which is very risky there isn't anything you can do. Even an illegal box as someone mentioned won't help as that whole frequency range is filtered out. The best way around this is to subscribe to their basic cable. Internet is $10 more a month if you don't subscibe to cable TV as well and the basic cable is $10 so its a wash. This will give you locals and a few more, but thats it because they can also put a trap on the line for this that will filter the expanded basic channels. In my case they didn't put the trap on so I get channels 2-99 and from what I hear its a well known secret that they rarely do.

Last year the then-Oceanic/Time/Warner cable box could be controlled for volume by its remote. Before we arrived this month, new owner Spectrum (Charter) rewired with "digital" cable. They provided a new box and matching remote for the BR box, but left the old box and its remote in the LR. When we couldn't get that remote to control for volume, Spectrum provided a new remote, but not a new cable box. Nope. Still couldn't change volume. Today we will unhook the LR HD-DVR cable box and take it and the new-style remote into the Spectrum office. We are dropping the DVR service. We will get a non-DVR cable box -- and, I hope, a remote that will control volume. (Yeah, sure.) I foresee that we will have to re-do ALL of this if/when we replace the current TV. (sigh) artemis and Bob -- Most of our guests are like you. They are here to enjoy the island, not sit and watch "Days of Our Lives" (or whatever soaps exist today). We rent both via VRBO and an agency. (We can bump their bookings.) I see other people's ads that stress the GIANT TV setups; evidently a larger daily requirement than I'd have thought. You can see our condo and our competition -- 1BR 2Bath Ocean View at Maui Kamaole in South Kihei. I want to get the TV situation settled before calling a photographer for new photos of the condo. (We are the "Many Happy Returns" ad.) raee -- We are getting programming as part of the deal. At one time we had to pay extra for HD; not now. chloecat -- What is an Amazon Prime Box, please? I think we need cable just to get reception here; no OTA signal, and we are prohibited from installing a dish.

What I'm asking is, when I go on Hulu+ some of the shows are not available for streaming to my Roku box, but are available to watch "internet only" as in on a computer or laptop (and hopefully an internet connected TV). And some shows aren't available on Hulu+ But they are available on the network's website. I can watch them on my computer or laptop no problem. But can I watch them on an internet connected TV?

Although each TV has access to the internet, be aware that each one can access a varying number of websites. The best smart TVs come with Wi-Fi already set up. The applications a TV offers can also be a deal breaker, since not all TVs offer the same apps. Each TV comes with different apps that the manufacturer has already installed. If you want to use Netflix and Facebook, you obviously won't want to consider TVs that don't offer those apps. The best app options include manufacturer-installed apps and an app store that will allow you to purchase additional apps. Several of the TVs we reviewed have access to app stores, but others did not.
