My twin sister has Spyware Blaster and she removed it to download the newest version 4.3. When she went into Add/Remove programs she saw some things with the word Java and she is wondering if she can remove these without having any problems? She also wants to know if these have anything to do with Spywareblaster?

She has Windows XPSP3.

I will give you the info below that is in Add/Remove Programs.

thanks zep! there you go, yes indeed you always want to remove any of the old java in add remove and only have the newest one because having the old ones still on your pc does make it vulnerable to the infections that get in through those old versions of java.

and no the java did not come from spywareblaster it is something else entirely.

as Javacool states for spywareblaster you can put the new version right over the old one or you can remove the old one first then add the new one. Both methods should work fine, if you encounter problems then remove and start clean.
remember to hit update and get any updates and then apply them to get the green shield.

I went in to my add/remove programs and I see a J2SE Runtime environment 5.0 Update 9 and on the left of it it looks like there is a little cup of coffee. The cup is blue. Is this a Java Program that needs updating, how does it get updated?

I do not have the Java (TM) 6 Update 19!

Here you go, this is the Java update site. Note just under the 'Update' link there is another link to verify your version

Java is used by websites to help them render properly, with out java enabled some sites you visit would not work as they should, you can actually disable java in your browser and view some sites and you can see exactly what I mean. Java is a platform that of late has been used by the bad guys to try to sneak in some of the "drive by" type infections. This is why it is very important to make sure you have the latest version of java and have removed all the old versions.
On your pc you can just go to your control panel then to the coffee cup icon which is java double click it and select update which will connect and update your java to the latest version, once you have the latest version and have removed all of the old versions you should not have to remove any more because the newest versions of java now take care of that, the old ones did not they required a manual removal. One thing to note is that you only want the java update you do NOT want any thing they may try to get you to take with it like toolbars etc so be careful when updating and pay attention so you uncheck any of those type items.

Java makes little applets you may have seen on webpages function as they should, say for example a weather map, or doppler map, some little games, certain speed tests you may run to see if you are getting the proper speed from your internet provider, those are all things that require you to have java enabled to see them function.

for example if you go to the link below which is a app for checking your speed online you will see it says if you do not have java enabled it will not run.

Thank you for the link. I downloaded the Java 6 update 20, which is the newest version. I checked it out like you said and it shows that it is working. I really appreciate the help. BTW can I remove the J2SE Runtime environment 5.0 Update 9 one now?

My ISP has its own speedtest site, that may be why it failed. But I do know that I have the newest Java version.

I tried that test today after you mentioned that and got the same thing so it must just be the site that is having a problem. The point was just to show what some of the apps that use java are all about anyway so no problem.

I know that the ones that I had listed for my sister was ok to remove except the 19 one, and I am assuming that I can also delete the J2SE Runtime environment 5.0 Update 9 from my computer, but I wanted to double check before I do that, only because it was the only one listed in my add/remove programs before I updated this new one. I don't know what the difference is between the Runtime environment one and the one that I just updated. Hope I am making sense here. I asked owbist but so far he has not gotten back to me.

Did I say or do something wrong? I am a bit surprised that I did not get an answer to my question. I went back to see which ones my sister had and she didn't have the update 9 one there and that is why I asked. I have no idea why it is there.

If I offended anyone please know I did not do it on purpose. I have been in a hurry to do what I need to do because I am going to be down for a day or two. We are having carpet installed and all of the furniture and the computer etc has to be out of this room. This is a desktop computer, and that is why it will take a little longer to get everything hooked back up. I will return as soon as I can to see if I get a response.

I guess I totally just missed you asking that, got busy answering the other part. Any of the old ones that are not the latest can be removed, so yes if you went and got the latest java you can remove that. I usually like to make a restore point before I do my deleting that way should I find I did need something I can revert back to the restore point so anytime you think you have a question about one just do that, always better safe than sorry and it only takes a second to do a restore point.

As you can tell I am back, computer is running, I'm online and all is well. "Smiles" I still have a lot to do with going through stuff and getting rid of things that I no longer need. I think that is going to take me longer to do than moving the furniture. "LOL"

I came on to ask what spyware program will work in harmony with AVG 9. Is this a good one to use?

I ask because yesterday I was using my laptop and went away from the computer for a minute, and when I came back there was a pop-up saying that in order to update I had to restart the computer. I hate to say that I restarted, thinking it was a request from Windows, but now I'm not so sure.

What operating system is this? Vista and Windows 7 already have Windows Defender running. Spwareblaster would be fine for you to install and I would recommend it, you will need to up-date manually once a week or so.

That may have been a windows up date, but not sure.

spywareblaster is not a scanner type program it sits in the background and helps to keep you protected from malicious sites, I use it on all my windows computers and highly recommend it, you just install the free version, then click on updates, then click on the enable all protection so that the shield is green as long as the shield is green and you have all the updates you are good. I manually check for updates about once a week.

for a good program that you can have on the pc no problems with any antivirus programs is malwarebytes. i would get the free version update it and run full scan with it once a week or so. Here are the directions, but I personally always do a full scan instead of the quick one.

I would do that scan now since you think you may have something on it now, let us know if it finds anything.

Zep, I have Windows Vista. And actually, I had to turn off Windows Defender a few months ago because it was interfering with AVG. I think it was AVG that it was clashing with, my memory isn't the best. Whether or not turning it off was a good idea, I don't know - but I haven't had any problems.

And you know, today on the desktop computer, I got the same 'restart' message, and it was actually an AVG update. So, I'm pretty sure it was the same one on my laptop.

Raven, seeing that I'm pretty sure it was either an AVG or Windows update, I don't think I'll have any problems. But, if I run into something, I'll let you know.

At the link posted for new version of spywareblaster, I clicked to download and see they are offering Free auto update. Is that a good thing, or not?

the auto update only comes with the pay version. the free version is manual update only.

when you click the link to download it will take you to another page and you have to choose continue download which is the one you want you want to continue with the free one, (not go to the right and select that one which is the pay one), then it will redirect you to the links where you can download it from I usually pick the majorgeeks link and there when you click on the download button it will open the screen with your actual download.

Thanks for confirming that - I was pretty sure it was AVG 9 conflicting with Windows Defender.

Just wanted to say that I downloaded the Malwarebytes, and ran a scan, and no threats were detected. Pretty cool since I've only ever had Norton and then AVG on my laptop. Knock on wood. Thanks for the link.
