Dealing with an Estate

My uncle passed away yesterday afternoon after a long series of health issues (kidney failure, dialysis, transplant etc). My dad and his siblings have been taking care of my uncle for the past decade and everyone is emotionally and physically exhausted. They started boxing up all of his things today and are already running out of steam. I'd like to step in and help with dealing with his stuff, but I'm at a loss.

He's got literally thousands of books, dozens of boxes of photographs (he was an amazing photographer), goodness knows how many woodworking tools and of course all the other stuff associated with running a house. The thing is, I don't think he had a detailed will to disposition everything, so we have no idea what he wanted done with his things.

How do I manage this? How do I minimize hurt feelings among family members? Any tips for selling/donating all the stuff no one in the family claims?

I'm in way over my head, but because he lived 600 miles from me and I didn't have to deal with the day to day care like everyone else, I feel like I need to step up and help out however I can. Help? TIA.
