Ashley's new puppy

No, I did not cave in and get a dog. I've been very clear that since I lost the WonderWeiner I have not wanted another dog. I still don't.

However, Ashley did want a dog, and so her current boyfriend bought her one and agreed to keep it at his house. He's a 7 week old Sheltie, meet Cooper:

he's not as calm as he looks, and Ashley/Adam are having a hard time housebreaking him, LOL, he's stubborn as heck. She told me how smart he was, then told me he falls off the bed three or four times a night. She also told me he was doing well on his housebreaking, but she sneaked him into my office and he promptly wet on the floor.

He's having lots of fun keeping Elery's feet safe from his socks, and he chews everything in sight and terrorizes poor old Pancho:

In other words, he's a typical puppy, which is why I didn't want another one. (grin) If I ever get another dog, I'll adopt a fully grown one, already housebroken!

Oh my goodness, is he ever cute! What a face! And Ashley is as beautiful as ever! He's really young, he'll catch on to the housebreaking.

(I don't want a puppy, either, Annie, for all the same reasons. I understand completely!)

Thought of the new plant thing, but none of the nurseries close to home are open any more and with no vehicle it is a little difficult to get to the ones that are still selling them. I have another garden 3'x3' full- I mean full of Victoria white Salvia, Salvia Evolution, and Bonfire Salvia - would it do much damage to transplant some of them to the new empty space? Any suggestions on some perrenials I could add next year to this garden? ( the larger one)? Would like to keep some of the annuals but add a few new perrenials. Thanks so much again

From what I have read on canine development, puppies who bite too hard often have been taken away from their mother and siblings too young. As others have said, a puppy's siblings will yelp if the bite is too hard and will refuse to play. That is intolerable to a pup, so it learns to moderate its bite and to play nicely with others. This lesson is used throughout the dog's life and is known as "bite inhibition." It keeps a puppy from biting its family too hard, a young dog from biting playmates too hard, a grown dog from biting the had that is giving a treat, and a family dog from chomping down on the hand of a toddler who has put it where the dog does not want the toddler to touch, as the dog tries to move the hand away! Yelping immediately when teeth touch you, turning away and stopping the interaction with the puppy, gives it the message that teeth on skin means all good things stop. Whether this is a good dog for you or not, I don't know. I would get the advice of a behaviorist. You might try to find a puppy play group where Molly can spend a few hours at a time, too, if you keep her. This would have to be with an experienced dog facility. I have found doggy day care to be the best thing for improving behavior at home. "A tired dog is a good dog." I believe that the standard is that no puppy should leave its litter mates and mom before 8 weeks of age. Some breeds may have an even older recommended adoption age. But always ask how old the pup was when it was surrendered. Look elsewhere if it was less than 8 weeks old. I wish you and Molly and your family the best!

you received some great advice on your other thread. i will add my thoughts. feed the older dog first., basically do everything for & with the older dog first, greeting, putting leash on, attention etc... don't "rescue" the puppy, unless of course its in danger. they have to figure it out and they will. when we adopted a puppy and had a 7 year old dog, it literally took about 6 months to have consistent normal days. it takes time!!!! it was rough and i was home with them 24/7., almost thought i had to re-home the puppy. but they became best friends and my older dog began to depend on the younger one to hear what she "should" bark at. i will say when the old one passed, my younger one was depressed for about 6 months, it was so sad. she was always waiting for her to come back. we couldn't even say her name b/c young one would perk up and look around...

Sounds like a special pup. Are you sure you want to add in hours of cooking, calculating and general brain power when you have a new baby in the house? Even my adult rescues do a great job scrambling my brain waves...... See dogaware.com for a lot of information on feeding a dog fresh food. Good reading, books to refer to and so on. I've been feeding fresh food since 2007, that melamine scandal right when I had an elderly dog come up with kidney disease did it for me. I've fed cooked and I've fed raw. Raw is so much easier and you waste less - bone. I haven't fed a pup, understand you feed the same amount as you will the adult dog but divide the meals up so pup can physically take it in and digest it. I check the diet against the NRC numbers using a nutrition database and the calculator from Monica Segal's book 'Optimal Nutrition' and adding a bit of this or that to be sure it meets the goals. I did have success cooking a basic raw diet by cooking a whole chicken, removing skin and meat and cooking the bones in a slow cooker until the bones were soft enough to puree in a blender. Then I took double the weight of the raw chicken in liver, beef and pork cooked and blended/chopped that then mixed all the meats and the bone puree together. Any cooking liquid is part of the meal, keep it all. My raw fed dogs get a multi vitamin/mineral supplement, vitamin E and fish oil according to size as well. To feed I calculated 2% of the dog's ideal weight, conveniently was 10 ounces. If the raw ingredients weighed 300 ounces and the cooked 260 then I'd feed that dog 260/30 a day. You can imagine the mess doing all this but the elderly dog no longer tolerated a raw diet. Dogs need a lot of meat. You can add in 25% mushy rice or pureed veggies to the basic diet if you like. That dog that needed 10 ounces of raw? He needed nearly the same minerals and vitamins as an adult human but packed into 600 calories a day. Any recipe that doesn't have calcium added or isn't mostly meat isn't going to work for a pup. Or make up a tasty topper of meat/fish/egg/liver and substitute that for anything less than 25% of the total calories pup needs. No need to be so precise about how much bone and all that is in there if you do that but you still need to figure out the calories per ounce or cup or whatever the topper has.

Awwwwwww, what a cute puppy. He'll figure out where it's OK to pee soon. I remember those first couple of weeks with Roxie, I slept in sweats so I could take her out quick during the night.

geeze he's beautiful,you know I'm a sucker for collies of any sort. I'm still working on Pip and his penchant for peeing on the carpet in the livingroom, one of the only areas of the house carpeted. I guess the tile floors aren't good enough anymore. Here he is now at 17 weeks with his first vacuum, a Hoover wet/dry dustbuster and boy has it come in handy!!!! You ought to get your AShley one of them. And some Folex carpet stain remover

What everybody else said, LOLOLOL. Same eyes, beautiful as ever, sweetest/cutest puppy, pee pee, Gold Toe socks, we would also adopt an older dog not a puppy, and so on! But I sure would like to snuggle with him for a minute or two!

Cooper is gorgeous. Just tell Elery you need a Spotbot and you'll love him to. The Spotbot is the perfect size for a "pee spot". Add the water, soap solution, and push the button. It does all of the work on the little spot. I got mine at BB&B with a 20% off coupon.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Shelties. I got my first Sheltie when I was 18 and he was a sable just like Cooper. He is adorable.

Although Shelties are the smartest dogs ever, even they aren't housebroke at 7 weeks. LOL!

Toooo cute! And yea, I mean both of them! Puppies - ALL puppies - are adorable and no you cant expect him to be housebroken at 7 weeks. Good luck with him, I'm sure he will have you won over in no time.

I love puppy breath too...at someone elses house. LOL! No, I haven't wanted another dog since Captain left us. That's 5 years now.

I bet Elery has another pair of socks in his drawer that are exactly the same as those.

I wish I could have a puppy. I could if we could bring them to work, but so far hospitals don't allow that, although we do have visiting dogs that go around to see the patients.

Oh, Cooper is sooooooo cute! And of course, Ashley is a beauty, too!

I am one that would love to have a puppy. All the work is worth every minute of cuddling! And they grow up way too fast!

LOLOLOL I never noticed Elery's socks. They're just all "black" to me, I probably even washed and matched those!

Judy, I keep the grandkids, even when they are naughty. I let Cooper visit, he even spends the night sometimes, but with no one here in the day so it's not a good place for a puppy. I work all day and Ashley is in college, so there is no one to be with a puppy, whether he's good or whether he's naughty. I used to walk home every day at lunch to let the WonderWeiner out, play with him, have lunch with him. I just don't want to do that anymore, so someone else will have to spend time with Cooper.

I noticed they both had blue eyes, but I didn't notice that Cooper was smiling. Probably because he'd just annoyed Pancho. Again. Poor Pancho, he's Elery's dog, a 12 year old chihuahua. I let him visit too, he comes and goes back and forth with Elery. He is NOT amused by Cooper, who feels the need to jump on top of him or try to herd him.

I will admit that it's more than slightly entertaining when Cooper tries to herd the cat, LOL, the Cat from He!! loves to play with dogs and she and Cooper tear through the house. I keep telling Cooper that it's sick and wrong to let a cat chase him, but he knows she has claws and he's fast.

Chase, if/when Ashley moves on to another boyfriend, there's going to be a serious issue over this dog!

Cute!... and so is the puppy. I like EJ's idea. Dolly has yet to be fully housebroken. She barks to go outside but then sneaks behind the furniture to leave a spot when I let her back in. I have a cheapo carpet cleaner machine that has saved the day countless times.

Oh Annie they are both beautiful!

Ashley could certainly be a photo model with her beautiful smile and perfect teeth. I'm sure the boys must be vying for her attention.

And Cooper is just lovely. Seeing him really makes me want to have a dog again.

I adopted my little terrier Goldie from the animal refuge here years ago so she was already house trained and lived to a good age here in our garden.

But now I'm reminded about those spots on the carpet which I'd forgotten about, so if I ever get another dog I think it will be from the doggie home again. :-)

I hope you don't have too many of those spots! Good idea that he's not left there alone during the day.

Annie, Cooper is just adorable, and I am very partial to shelties. If I had not gotten Dexter (my Maltese) I would have gotten a Sheltie. They really are smart dogs. (OK, so even smart people fall out of bed sometimes).

Shelties are one of many great breeds out there and Cooper is a cutie for sure. Another fan of puppy breath and puppies in general. Enjoy your new pal Ashley!!

Peter, Pip is gorgeous, and what a smart dog, he can already use a vacumn! (grin) I couldn't see your picture until I got home, the county's computer blocks some pictures, not others. Go figure. Anyway, he's just a beautiful dog.

Lyra, the WW wasn't housebroken at 7 weeks either, but he was by the time he was 4 or 5 months old. Unless he got mad at me, in which case he only chewed MY stuff and peed on MY bed!

OMG, I want a puppy. Ok, urge passed. :)

Both are too cute, but you knew that. I love that the pup is being chased by a cat. Now we know who runs the house. Just have fun with the little one, they do grow so fast and before you know it they are grey in the muzzle.

Snuggle that soft coat for me and had Cooper a treat too.

Darling pooch! I had a sheltie growing up and I still have such wonderful memories of her, she was such a great dog. Keep posting photos! My sister and her fiance bought a puppy together - yep, they broke it off and had visitation with the dog, which lasted until she started dating again and then things got ugly and complicated -- she did end up with the dog in the long run, but it wasn't pretty for a while. Hopefully things will go smoother for Ashley!

Cooper is so cute. If we were ever to get a larger dog, it would be a sheltie. My DH also has another matching pair of socks for Elery.

I just saw Pooper....um....I mean Cooper today. I gave him his first taste of peanut butter, now he loves me. So much that he wants to chew my fingers, LOL, he REALLY liked the peanut butter.

I'm not telling Ashley she's beautiful, she already knows it. (grin) Her head would be too big to get in the door.

She starts school again next week, so I'm not sure how little Cooper is going to do on the house breaking, I told Ashley I'd buy some "puppy pads" if I were her. That's how I housebroke the WonderWeiner, it was December when I got him and he only weighed 3 pounds. He was so tiny that he got lost outside in the snow so I paper trained him. When spring came I moved the paper closer and closer to the door until it was outside on the porch. He spent his whole life "double trained", he'd much rather go outside but he'd use a paper if I were gone 12 or 14 hours or overnight.

On a good note, he DID not pee on my office floor today, LOL.

Pip still peeing on the carpet occasionally if he thinks no one is looking or out of sight and he still does the "excited" to see you pee upon greeting a stranger. He's just around 17 weeks now so hopefully it won't go on much longer.. he can hold it when he's in his crate and he hasn't #2'd in the house for weeks and weeks now. Still it's exasperating.

Peter, this is Ashley's first experience at housebreaking, she had puppies before but I always trained them, so she thought it was easy, LOL.

Ann, he's growing so fast, I'm waiting for him to get that luxurious coat that Stetson had. Then Ashley can learn about grooming. (grin)
