Update on family, surgery for me Tuesday and Peyton Friday

Peyton has her surgery scheduled for this next friday. On the other hand I ended up in the emergency room at 10:00 last night in terrible pain. The dignosis was 2 kidney stones ( had no idea and on passed this morning the other is still there), very low potassium level which we have gotten up. My gallbladder was contracting and is still full of stones. After a night of pain and worry about the kids and Peyton's surgery, I bit the bullet and am scheduled for surgery with the gallbladder on Tuesday. With the multilple attacks and problems there is a chance that they may have to do the full open surgery, not my idea of fun after just having a c-section. Plus with the antibiotics I have had to pump and dump for the last 2 days and will have to do the same for the next 3. I am worried about drying out, I have been pumping but am not the best pumping

Let me tell you though the thought of all of you out there praying for me and thinking of me made me make it through the last 2 days. Now if I could beg for another week of thoughts that would be great. I am still feeling loopty and worried so much about my family and my surgery.

Jay, I don't know what's happening in the rest of Oklahoma, but here at our house, very light rain started falling around 3:45 a.m. when the temperature was 36 degrees. Then, as the temperature fell, the rain transitioned, first and briefly to freezing rain, then to sleet which fell for a while, and then to snow, which has been falling for about an hour-and-a-half. Within the last 5 minutes, the flakes have become huge but also have smaller ice pellets mixed in with them. Our temperatures have been hanging right around and just below freezing all morning. The thermometer on the front porch has dropped from 33 degrees, which is what it was when the snow started falling, to 30 degrees, where it has remained for the last 55 minutes. Tim drove home from work in it this morning, but the temps had stayed higher than initially expected in Dallas, so they were getting rain only and nothing frozen. Of course, the further north he drove the worse the weather became. Overall, our forecast is for slightly colder weather and a little more precip over the next couple of days than initially forecast. However, since the freezing rain was very brief, we don't seem to be in danger of having power outages, which is always my primary concern with weather like this. We are likely to lose internet service at some point. The deer are out there eating the deer corn and the wild birds are eating the seed I put out late yesterday evening. The fact that they came out to eat in the snow tells me they think it will last a while. Generally, they stay under cover and wait for the snow to end and then come to the feeding area to eat. I have coffee in the big thermos bottles and a pot of ham bean soup bubbling away on the stove, so I'm ready to feed the firefighters if we have calls today, except I still need to whip up a couple of batches of corn bread muffins to go with the soup. It is going to be a long, boring stretch of cold days, but it certainly won't be as bad as last year's winter weather that wouldn't end. And, as long as the internet and satellite TV are working, we can at least amuse ourselves with them. The snow is pretty, but after about 3 days without sunshine I start getting cabin fever. We had sunshine in great abundance yesterday, so I shouldn't start feeling sun-deprived for another couple of days. Dawn

Stacie, sorry to hear about your DH's newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes and his other GI issues. I am a nutritionist/registered dietitian and I work in an endocrine research clinic. It is indeed possible that his blood sugar can be in the 400's when undiagnosed, and his level will also be affected by infection and the stress of pain/illness. There are so many excellent oral diabetes meds these days. Lifestyle changes are the key (along with blood glucose monitoring at home and meds) to controlling diabetes. Your DH has a lot to live for and lots of motivation to make some changes. Even a 5-7% modest decrease in his body weight as he is overweight will make a big difference in improving his diabetes control. He does not need to give up sugar. He does need to start eating a much more healthy overall diet including veggies & fruits. One of the best resources for what people with diabetes should eat is the American Diabetes Association book "16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet" by Karen Chalmers. It's on Amazon.com for ~$12 plus shipping. I highly recommend this newly updated book. Your library may have it. Also, it would be good for him to attend somem diabetes management classes at a local hospital -- provided they are taught by a CDE (certified diabetes educator) who is up to date on the latest management/nutrition recommendations for people with diabetes. I think your Peyton will be fine.I've had my whole thyroid removed in 2 separate operations,by 2 different dr's and about 20 years apart,and you can't even see my scar.They made it in the crease of my neck and it doesn't show at all!! Good luck to you and Peyton both.You'll be happy when your gall bladder is gone.They did mine thru 4 little holes.(Got chemo brain now )and can't remember the name of the way they did it,but there is no scar thee either. Lated update: he is in recovery right now. Chris (dad) ended up coming back here to the hospital as things got stressful here. He now has a port and a feeding tube. They were not able to do that other procedure as there was no clear boundaries and if they would have pushed thru they ran too high of a risk hitting a major vessel per say and he would die on the table. So, with that said he will be back in surgery next week to place a permanent shunt. Keep up the prayers. He needs some major miracles. Seems like all odds are against him and oh...his vocal chords are weak and they don't know for sure if he will speak or swallow again. Only time will tell. Generally it takes 3-6 months to get that back in other cases in other grades of this tumor. They don't have statics on a grade 3. Dear God, I feel like we are writing history here. Let's just pray that everything that they are doing is right and that other kids who get this will survive like our Bradley. Thanks:) Wish i just had better news for once...hopefully at the end of this we will. I am sure there is alot of the medical terminology that neither 'mom or dad' completely understand, they are not in the medical field.....as long as the Dr. does, that is what counts.

I am taking Levaquin. The bad thing is that I am allergic t erythromycin and its family and also Cephlosporans and all in the famil.Between this and breast feeding I am limitied. Right now I am haveing a kidney stone attck and gallbladder attack at the same time. I haven't ever felt this terrible and I have had 3 c-sections.

The reason I asked about the antibiotic is because you need to be sure to dump for a few days after stopping the antibiotic so that you will be certain that all of it is out of your system. I had to take Zithromax while breastfeeding and I did the pump and dump for 6 days after I stopped taking it, and my son still grew up to be allergic to Zithromax (and probably erythromycins -- we've never tried them). The Levaquin has a much shorter half-life than the Zithromax (about 8 hours compared to about 70 hours), but you still need to dump for a few days after stopping just to be sure. It was a really frustrating seeing all of that milk go to waste, but now I regret not dumping more of it. It was even more frustrating watching my child get a horrible rash, and see his eyes and lips swell so much he could hardly breathe for several days after one dose of antibiotic that he was allergic to because I didn't dump enough milk.

Thank you so much for helping me out to understand the reasons between pumping and dumping. I am already alergic to erythromycins and Cephlosporans so have a limited number of antibiotics that I can take.

I am feeling really bummed out right now, my mom took the younger 3 home with her because Rhiannon has to stay for preschool, already got an earful bucause she has missed some days. Don't get me wrong, married to a teacher and as a format teacher I can understand, but with all the health problems and thee closest family is an hour away

Loooks like surgery for me in the morning and Peyton on Friday, I hope that I feew well enough to go and help DH with Peton in the hospital. The thought of cutting her throat open and removing part f th hyoid bone. Plus I am reall nervous because of the attacks and scar tise ssince the first looked at it there is chance they can't get it out laprascoply thn I will ge back on a 6 week recver time which all in all ends up bein 18 weeks. I can't wait to stop feeling boaty, nautious, sever upper abdominal pain and lower back pain. As fr as I am concearned about being out of commision and no lifting and DH is having to go to Bball games and wrestling as part of his job

I got home and lets just say I was a little bit out of it. I definately couldn't be an alcoholic or drug addict, I feel so out of it. Let me tell you that it is worse than a c-section, and at least that way you get to take a baby home. I am really sore all over my abdomen and it is nicely bruised. When I went in firt he said I would have no restrictions, little pain and could do what I wanted Baloney, no lifting for 3 days, 3 more days of pumping and no driving. My mom has the younger 3 and my MIL has Rhiannon and they are enjoying time with Grandma and Grandpa. Dan has been big help and watches over me to make sre I don't do so much. I could post some pics if anoyone wants to see. The incissions , I was surprised being laprascopic surgery the ammoun of holes, and the sizes and all the bruising. Other than sitting still it hurts anyway I move.

Thank you for all the thoughts, sufloers and prayers, It is going to be some time before I et to feeling better. Just srng my ptty party

Stacy, I am glad that you came through your surgery. Be sure to take care of yourself...but please do not post pictures of your incision.
Now just get your little one through her ordeal and maybe you will be able to get on with 2009.
