Both brands make LP units in the factory (i.e. not a retrofit, though apparently they can do that, too) and both brands claim no power loss with LP, unlike most other brands.

Another poster (jacobsmipascha or something like that) bought a BS drop-in and had several issues that were supposedly being addressed by BS but I do not recall seeing a follow-up saying everything was taken care of.

A lot of confusion about what burners you get on the BS drop-in, I do not recall the specs du jour and at this point would not trust anything I hear other than direct correspondence with BS.

You can order BlueStar configured for LP. I have a 48" LP range sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

I've been cooking with my BS range top with LP for over two years and it is fantastic. All burners go down to a low whisper of a simmer-level flame. The 'simmer' burner just has flame coming out of the 3 1/4" diameter center ring of the star burner making it ideal for smaller pans. The 22k burner, while more powerful, is also great at lower levels for wide, even heat distribution on large pans with delicate ingredient.

A friend with an AG Wolf range using LP is equally pleased. You should be happy with either choice.

Why do so many of you use AG ranges? What about self cleaning? I have had an oven without self cleaning and felt like shooting myself every time I had to spray that awful oven cleaner on it and then stick my head inside the oven and clean. Sometimes I thought about turning on the oven while my head was inside cleaning. Ha Ha. YaThink Monogram says their burners go from l7500 to l5000 when you switch to LP. So that is good about Wolf and BS. Thanks. Keep the info coming.

AG is available in some brands with self cleaning ovens just not BS or Wolf. For me a self cleaning oven is mandatory. Every bit as important IMO as paying attention to the BTU specs. I can live with a few K less BTU's. I'd rather not spend my free time scrubbing an oven.

I agree cdave that self cleaning is number one for me. I wonder what brands using open propane have self cleaning ovens. I have seen you in other threads talk about the five star which I also like a lot and the price is a couple of thousand cheaper. The only concern I could find with five Star is the weight vs other ranges. What do you think about that?

Viking might make an open-burner range with self-cleaning oven - I think I've read that on here before. However, I don't know if they make specific LP ranges which is what you want. Wolf and Bluestar do NOT have the self-clean on their open burner AG ranges. Why give up the self-clean? For the combination of open burners and a gas infrared broiler which was vital in my kitchen. But boy, do I wish I had self-clean . . .

AFAIK FS and Viking offer self cleaning in LP. Viking is available with open burners in more configurations than FS. The weight of FS is an issue but hopefully the bonus would be a lower price. The most noteable difference is the weight of the oven door and the grates. The opposite of that is BS which is very heavy. Remember you need to get that bad boy in your kitchen and in place with out damaging your floors. Then you may need to move it for service, painting or cleaning you hood. Viking rates their burner BTU lower for LP however I think as long as you have a quality installation that the difference is nominal. Oddly enough they rate the ovens the same with either set up. I would opt for a convertable range. If you ever move you may want to take your appliances. Just another thing to consider.
The new BS cooktop specs are a puzzle to me. I just can't imagine spending the $$$ for two 22k burners with the rest of the burners the same or lower BTU than a standard consumer cooktop. BS also suggests that their 22k burners are not suitable for simmering on their web site. I can't say I see that as an issue with all of the other burners being so small in the new specs we are hearing about any how. I have no idea why they would stop using the 15k burner but it seems like a very poor move if it is true.

I'm not sure what the specs are for a new BS, but I have been cooking on a 48 inch BS Heritage cooktop (LP) since we moved in around Christmas. I couldn't be happier.
