When is it okay to re-install toilet after tile floor is laid

I'm finally having the yucky Berber carpeting removed from both bathrooms and replacing with porcelain tile. Installer will remove the commodes but I'm told I'll have to call a plumber to re-install them. How long after the tile is laid must I wait? Do I have to go to a motel overnight just to have bathroom facilities? I was told that for the smaller bath, they would use quickset so that bathroom will be useable, but I'm concerned about the toilet being re-installed too soon.

You DIY'ers have my respect. You sure do save a lot of $$ when you don't have to call a pro for everything. The plumber has been at my house 4 times the last month, with two more visits next week to reinstall the commodes. Today I told him I think my sixth visit should be free or heavily discounted. He just laughed.

I lurk on these forums every time I have something that needs doing on the house. Thanks to all of you for the valuable information you share.

Installing a toilet is about the simplest bath project there is. Really. Put a wax ring down, put the toilet over the two screws poking up, screw the bolts onto the screws, attach the water line, open the valve.

Watch the tile installer remove it and you'll just have to reverse his steps. Actually it'll be easier, because he has to drain the tank first (shut off valve, flush toilet)and then try to get the last of the water out so it doesn't drain all over the floor when he moves it. You'll be putting a dry toilet back on.

If it makes you feel better, just install the one toilet and have the plumber come back and check everything and install the second one.

My tile was laid last Friday and they grouted on Saturday. I think the plumber could've put the toilet back on Saturday too...but he doesn't work on Saturday! He put it back on Monday. It's soooooooooooooooo wonderful to be rid of the carpet!!!

We just finished re-doing our guest bath (and are about to start on our master bath). We tiled up to the ceiling, around a tub, with a decorative strip of smaller tiles all the way around the walls. My GC -- who we're using because he did such a great job when we expanded and re-did our kitchen a few years ago -- did the tiling. He's not a full-time tile guy, let alone a tile master craftsman the likes of Bill and Mongo who post here. But he knows what he's doing, he takes pride in his work, he wants to please me as the customer, and he doesn't take shortcuts to save time. I know he went a couple of days over his estimate on this job because some days there was a lot of tile cutting, but he never complained nor raced ahead just to get done. One morning I mentioned how a few of the small tiles in the listello section weren't spaced quite evenly, and in one place the variation in the tile colors didn't seem as random as elsewhere. His reply: "Yeah, I noticed that, too; I moved a few tiles around as I set them yesterday to even out the spacing, but I was going to pop a few more off and reset them this morning." These weren't problems he created; it's just the way the tiles came on the sheet -- yet he agreed that it would look better to adjust, and was going to do so on his own (and at no additional cost for his time). THAT is what I value in a good contractor! I'm sorry, sherwhy, that your contractor doesn't have similar values; we consider ourselves fortunate to have found this guy -- which is why he's slowly getting job after job to re-do most of our house! -- Eric

Although it is a common "Jury rig" fix, Code does not permit the use of two wax rings. In fact, the double thick wax rings we commonly find in hardware and home supply stores are not code approved. Per Code, the underside of the closet flange is to be in firm contact with the finished floor, which then leaves the top of the flange extended about 3/8" above the finished floor (The thickness of the flange itself.) The concern here is that if the wax seal is too thick, if it becomes necessary to plunge the watercloset there would be a very high risk of the plunging action blowing out the wax seal.In instances such as when additional subfloor material or ceramic tile is built up on the existing floor, leaving the flange flush with or recessed below the finished floor level, the proper solution is to: 1.Reposition the closet flange 2.Add a "Build up flange" to extend the top surface of the flange up to the prescribed level.

This is a great thread. We're not remodeling but building a new house, and man, can I relate to a lot of these. ...you know every lighting fixture, faucet, sink, appliance by memory because you have endlessly researched each one. you freak out your own GC because you can discuss minute details about your house/kitchen from memory down to the 1/8". you have more e-mails from your GC/subs than you do from your friends. you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat about some critical detail and then go downstairs to e-mail your GC about it right at the moment before you forget.

kitchenkelly (and everyone else) should I have them maybe cut that tapered trim (I don't know what it's called) maybe in half and then do it picture frame style? I sorta need to make up my mind by tomorrow morning when they come to finish things off. I like the tapered edge, not so fat as the quarterround, so maybe that's the way to go.

No he couldn't. You need to wait atleast a day before working on top of fresh grout. Even then you want to lay down cardboard or something to prevent shoes or tolls from digging into the grout.

I just noticed something in the OP-- that is UNLESS they use quickset AND hydraulic grout. Then the toilet can be reset 3-4 hours later.

Thanks for your replies. I think I'll err on the side of caution with the larger bathroom and wait a couple days. And I'll double-check that they indeed use quickset and hydraulic grout in the smaller one.
