My little Tristin is having surgery today

My sweet, precious, cuddly angel, Tristin, 18 months and my only grandson, is finally having hernia surgery today. I know it is commonplace. I know it is not that big a deal. But...the worrier in me keeps thinking of all the things that could go wrong.

Please give a thought to him, and pray that my precious little angel will not suffer a difficult recovery.

(((Springer Mom and Baby))) Good advice from Laurie, as always! When going thru similar situations, I've always marveled at how our furbabies seem to handle these things better than we could. Our cat Nikita came home after a week-long stay in the hospital (she burst her bladder after slipping and falling from the top of the wardrobe, and it was sewn together and some ugly stitches lined her tummy) - I was going crazy with worry, and the first thing she did when we reached home, was to coolly walk over to her PinkPanther, snatch him up in her mouth and hide with him in the bathroom. The vet did tell us to keep her confined to a small area for a couple of days, and then to allow her to just 'be a cat' later. She was zipping around the house at full speed in no time. You'd never know she had been thru major surgery (it was terribly 'major' for me!) I know waiting for results is really hard. Hope everything works out well. It's all over (for now). They gave me iv sedation, stuck a catheter in my arm and went to work. Found a narrowing around my shoulder, got it fixed to 9 centimeters but found a clot so they stopped, patched me up and sent me home. They'll go back in next Thursday, get out the clot, and restretch the opening to 12 cm. Well, I'm comfortable and it's all okay to resume regular dialysis tomorrow. Yes, it's very similar to angioplasty, which my husband had on his heart afew years ago. Thanks everyone for your good wishes and prayers! I love everyone on Kitchen Table. You all are the greatest!

As you know, we've had four Westies (one at a time) throughout our marriage (50 years). Charlie died of tongue cancer at nine -- I'm certain from a lesion that happened when he saved my diamond ring from going down the drain during a bath -- and urrped up two weeks later. The resulting lesion was only discovered when I took him in for dental work years later. Rosie came to us too old to take to training. She was an escape artist and was eventually killed on a highway between our house and a shopping mall as we chased after her. Pip was the prize winner in conformation, and as loving as Charlie. We spent a fortune on his skin troubles, but he finally grew out of them at about ten and lived well (deaf and blind) until just before his 17th birthday. Eliot was from Westie Rescue, not entirely Westie as he *shed*. He had an acid stomach, requiring special canned food for the last five years or so. He developed bleeding warts; was deaf and going blind. We coped until he seemed to become senile and incontinent. He was a loving companion until we had to put him down this spring at 15. His constant 'chewie' was a chip from our bluestone-chip driveway. Any stone I accidentally sucked up into the central vac was immediately replaced by him on the next walk. He'd crunch on this and toss it around in his mouth. An acquired 'taste', eh? I think we are done now, but it's kind of you to 'share' Oski. Westies are cute...and tough! Cataract surgery, Just had my first eye done today

My lenses were over and above what my insurance would pay, too, in order to correct for severe astigmatism as well as my very serious myopia. My doctor was genius.....he corrected one eye just a wee bit less than perfect, which allows me to see near and far; I can read all but the tiniest print without readers and even apply my makeup! There is no way that I could be happier with the results. Even after two years, I still find myself groping for my glasses when I wake up in the morning, lol. The surgery was such a blessing for me. One thing that I had to deal with, especially for the first several months, was uncomfortable dryness. I was encouraged to use a gloppy gel at night, and a couple of different kinds of drops during the day. I still use lubricating drops a couple of times a day.

Everything will be fine & I also am sending positive vibes & prayers. Little tykes don't have the established sense of pain as us older wimps. Seriously, they don't. We sometimes teach our kids to be freaky about pain, inadvertently, every time we run to them saying, "Oh, you've got a boo-boo! Here, let me make it all better!"

As a teenager, I volunteered for a time as a candy-stripper. It was amazing how the little kids handled being sick & having surgeries. I learned a lot from those toddlers.

Hope everything's over & little Tristin is back in his Mom's arms.

He is fine. He is home now, and has been sleeping in his Mommy's arms for the last 5 hours. He has had a very, very rough life so far, and hopefully he is now on the mend and things will go better for him. He is just the most beautiful, sweet, cuddly little man imaginable.
Can you tell I kind of like him??

Oh he is doing well. He won't climb onto the couch cause it hurts his little tummy, and he is not moving as fast, but he is sweet, and happy and cheerful. I am going to go look for a recent picture. Hope I have one. (I am not a big picture taker, but his Mommy sometimes downloads pix onto my computer).

I love happy news! I'm glad to hear he is bouncing back in a hurry.

My son came back from the OR standing in the hospital crib after testicular torsion surgery at 18 months. Sturdy little rascals!

I am so glad to read that he is home and doing ok. Kids are a little miracle, how they bounce back. Just wait until Tuesday, he will be into everything again.

Hi Sherry,

I hope little Tristan is still continuing to improve as quickly as possible. Of course you are a wonderful grandma, and he and his parents are very lucky to have you. Extra hugs for you and your DH, because I'm sure you both were very worried. Glad it's going so well! Would love to see some updated pics:-)

Susan! I haven't heard from you in ages! Thank you everybody. He had kind of a rough day yesterday, and he was pretty crabby and whiny. I guess that is to be expected though. He is probably still a little ouchy. We kept his older sister for that last 4 days. I think I have convinced her that she has to play gently with him and cannot get rough. (She is kind of hyper and gets carried away). I am sure he will be fine and am glad to finally have that business over with.
Now good luck to all the others here who have medical issues. I will be thinking of all of you.

Tristin has cried all day and is running a fever. Please God don't let it be the doctors screwed something up. I hope it is just a cold or something. I will let you all know as soon as I find anything out.

Oh, no! I missed this. I am glad he had the surgery but worried now! How is he feeling? Sending hugs, Sherry! It is stressful seeing a little guy go through that. Everyone tells me they don't remember...if that is any help! I am hoping the pain is behind him.

I have tried to call my son, and I don't get an answer at the house, so I have no idea what is going on. He doesn't have my work number, so he probably called the house, and if Roger is out fishing, I won't know about him until I get home from work. this is killing me. I hope he does not have an infection in his surgery area.

Well, I finally got through to my DIL last night. She said that they called the doctor about the fever and he said to wait and see if it continued and then call him back if it did. She said that it gets high, they give tylenol, then it goes down, then repeats the cycle. I told her if it keeps coming back there is an infection somewhere, and it could be because of the operation or just a cold or something. She said that Tristin was pretty quiet and lethargic yesterday after spending the day before that just crying. I told her to monitor that temp and not to be shy about calling the doctor back. If it continues today, to CALL HIM BACK. We will see how it goes today.

I'm so sorry to hear he's not feeling chipper. I agree with you that he should be seen. Just as an aside, DD gives Jayden alternating doses of tylenol and motrin every 3 hours for fevers as per her pediatrician's instructions. It seems to keep his fever under control.

Sherry, I was hoping that Tristin was feeling better. I hope the fever is down today and that Tristin is a little more himself. If not I'd be taking him to the doctor just to be on the safe side.

Sorry. Guess he just has a bad cold with lots of nasty runny nose stuff. Son says, "Mom, quit freaking. I am a nurse. I am monitoring this.
