Please Tell Me About The FiveStar 48' Range
Comments (7)Okay, not apples to apples, but I'll share what I saw at a local "closeout/scratch and dent/over-run store" on a 30" range. I've no experience actually using the unit, so take what I say with the proper grain of salt. The unit I saw was open burners@ 15,000 btu, no convection, 120v. Remember, this is a closeout store. Knobs were not secure, loose, plastic, ready to fall off. Backguard attached with sheetmetal screws, evident, 3/4 of the screw facing front. Bottom drawer a bit finicky. Have to pull up just right to close easily. No drip pan. Dis-assembly of the top fairly simple, but lots of nooks and cranies that would be a pain to access. On the other hand, lack of electronics means if I can't fix it, a buddy of mine that does appliance repair can. For 900.00 it's attractive. I really can't afford the close to 4,000.00 my ideal Bluestar would cost. I could see it as a work in progress. I could adapt knobs, re-do the backguard, re-engineer the latch of the bottom drawer. Can not add a drip pan under the top burners. Could minimize cleaning with creative tinfoil application. My opinion, worth exactly what you payed for it, is a question. How much are you willing to compromise? At least that's the question I ask. Other companies make products that are more tactily rewarding, better engineered, user friendly, ergonomic, etc. Will they cook food any better? I'm guessing that's still up to the cook. Sorry, no answers here. Mark...See MoreWolf 36' AG vs FiveStar 36' AG
Comments (2)I too was impressed with the value of the Five Star. One thing that convinced me not to buy it was that it required the layout of four burners and a reversible griddle/grill in the center. I would rather have six burners. I am also not sure if the griddle/ grill has enough btu's to get the job done. Lastly, I have heard concerns that reversible griddle/ grills can be a bear to keep clean (although I think an additional reversible plate can be purchased for $275 and then one can be used for a grill, one for a griddle. One really nice thing about the Five Star 48" range is that one oven is gas and the other is electric....See MoreNew 48 inch range - DCS vs. American Range vs. Five Star
Comments (3)In general: I have had open and closed burner gas tops and closed are 100% easier to clean, I would never never get open unless I had daily cleaning help. The BTU rating on the highest burner is important, as well as a very small BTU simmer burner. I also need continuous grate to slide a pot over, and prefer mechanical knobs to electronic keypads. There are some cooktops where the grates are too high off the burners and there are complaints of a feeling of under-powered burners despite the BTU rating. I think this whole open burner for the home thing is nothing short of ridiculous, it is more of a high volume restaurant issue, but his is gardenweb... I do not like the performance of gas ovens. I like electric and I love the functionality of convection. I would never buy an oven without convection. So I would vote for closed burner gas cooking and electric ovens....See MoreAny long-term experiences with Five Star?
Comments (6)Five Star has a tiny market share and has not done much marketing since the 1990s except for hiring Rick Bayless for endorsement. I think the problem is that the Five Star brand is a very small sideline for the Tennessee-based Brown Stove Works. The Brown company mainly manufactures very basic appliances that are mostly are sold to rebranders (e.g., Summit) and to large-project landlords such as public housing agencies. Not much to these units, so not a lot to go wrong apart from physical damage. Pretty much the same story with the Five Star line except that the stove top burners are bigger. The market share is so small that even when the subject of a forum thread is Five Star, many, if not most, most of the comments will be about other brands. Have you seen this older thread?: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2309192/five-star-48-range Or this one chowhound? http://www.chowhound.com/post/48-gas-dual-fuel-range-wolf-fivestar-thermador-viking-dacor-472289 Pretty much the same story at ChefTalk: http://www.cheftalk.com/t/18236/5-star-range-question One suggestion for finding opinions: Brown was a contractor for Viking back when Viking was getting started. I think that relationship continued through the 1980s and maybe into the early 90s. Researching older Viking stoves might get you some info on use and repairability. I looked at a 30-inch Five Star when I was stove-shopping three years ago but could not get past the tiny ovens. Sorry I can't bemore help....See Morejacobsmishpacha
