Pasting Rich Text

Hello,

I've begun relying more on webmail for doing my email, instead of an email client like OE. But, since I'm on dial-up, I tend to compose longer emails offline in Wordpad or (a new one I'm trying) Jarte. I compose the document/email as rich text (bold, italics, etc.) hoping to copy-and-paste it in the compose window of my webmail client (Fastmail, EuMX or whatever). But I always lose the rich text formatting when pasting, and I end up having to do all of that over again in the webmail client ! >:-(

I vaguely remember successfully pasting a rich text email in some webmail compose window a while back without loss of formatting, but I can't remember which email account it was or how I did it.

So my question: is there a way to paste (not merely attach) a rich text message in a webmail client's compose window w/o loss of formatting (bold, underlining, etc.) ?

Oh, I should mention that I'm using Windows XP SP2, and I *do* make sure that on my webmail I'm composing in html (not plain text).

fwiw. using Vista

I just tested Wordpad with some plain and optional fonts along with mixed color text, italics, bold and probably something called gibberish - and Hotmail/mail.live.com copy/pastes to as matching rich text or html.

Thank you for the reply. Things have not improved and I've been doing research to find out why. It's only me, one guy, so maybe it's my problem. I think it has to do with a format issue, that's all I know and want to know. At first I thought it was a clip board problem. More: on Paste Special. If you have ever tried copying and pasting to another document or application in which the formatting is different, you may have found yourself with mismatched text. You can use paste special to make the task of pasting text go more smoothly by choosing which formatting you want to keep (source or destination) or stripping the text of any formatting at all. http://www.ehow.com/how_2190263_paste-special-microsoft-word.html Google "paste special" too! Thanks for your questions and suggestions mikie. I have Windows 7, generally use chrome (Version 36.0.1985.125 m) although sometimes switch to IE for the occasional site that isn't optimized for Chrome. Did try to create an email using IE and it made no difference. Not sure what you're asking about online hotmail - my addy is @hotmail.com but it's accessed through Outlook. I do use Adblock+ and have tried turning that off with no change. Also have been using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes anti malware (the free version) for quite a while and I'm ashamed to say I don't know how to temporarily disable either one. I know how to remove the programs but can't find a way to temporarily disable - I'm having a duh moment - what am I missing?

A lot of good, albeit, divergent points, have been made here. I agree with Cmarlin that one can be as smug about being frugal as one can be arrogant about being well-to-do. Either way, the person is forming their self-concept & identity around their spending habits or/and net worth. Billl's point that home sizes have exploded is noteworthy. As someone who was house hunting in 2006 (& purchased when the market was sky high) I was looking around like crazy for a small house in a decent neighborhood. Such a configuration is nearly impossible to find! I bought a house with a little under 2600 sq. ft. Would I have preferred 1700? Yes. I bought a house with a big front lawn. Would I have preferred a smaller lawn? Absolutely. It just didn't work out that way. Billl also notes the "massive home improvement" industry. Yes, & I "need" to update my kitchen & baths to the tune of oh so much money it makes me sick...IF...I ever am to sell this house. Why? Because expectations have been greatly influenced by this reno trend. I was just "out of it" enough not to even realize when I bought the house, that my rooms were dated! (Our seller was really lucky!) I can make peace with my dated rooms, but will suffer at selling time if I don't "keep up with the Joneses!" I have little if any need to impress others, but I need to survive in this world! There are lots of reasons why people do what they do. Many of us are just trying to deal with the unanticipated changes, I guess, brought about by the economic downturn. We feel the need to protect this fragile investment called a "home." It can be scary & depressing, but we've got to hang in there, & have faith & hope that things will "bounce back."

Thanks for the response.

I decided to try my "Live" account again. But it still didn't work. It lost all formatting and came out looking like plain text. Grrrr....

FWIW, I'm using the Classic interface (because of my slower, dial-up connection). Perhaps this is something Live allows/does in the "full version" ? I'll see if I can try it.

I use the cheap version of @hotmail... to me its old school - hate change... and faster too.

Save as... temp.rtf before doing the copy/paste ?
..so it knows the text is .rtf and not txt, unicode doc or some other format.

I use Juno email. It's free. You can compose off-line directly in the email program. You don't even have to an ISP (other than free Juno). When you hit send, it will automatically dial up, get and receive mail, then automatically close the connection to the internet.

Reading and writing is so much simpler and faster, and with a larger work screen too.

Hi ! Thanks for the additional responses !

@mikie: My "live" address is free, so if that's what you mean by "cheap".... I don't like paying for email. ;-)

Also, the files/messages are being saved as .rtf fiiles. But I think I found the real problem (thanks to someone's observation elsewhere): the webmail compose screens are set to compose html emails, true. But rich text (a la Wordpad) is not quite the same. Apparently, I need to compose a message in an HTML editor (like Word or Kompozer) in order for a copy-and-paste maneuver to work with a webmail compose page. Fortunately, I use Seamonkey as my browser, which has a built in composer I learned I can use for the purpose ! :-) So, my situation is basically resolved.

@leftwood: Actually, I'm trying to avoid using an offline email client just to avoid some steps. Since I like using webmail interfaces in my various accounts, I like the simplicity of just opening a program for writing a document, rather than opening a whole email program and then going into "compose."

But, yes, I had Juno once -- seems like ages ago. I started with it, in fact. I liked it. I had the pay service ("free" was too slow). And I liked the built in email client -- based on Outlook Express. But the pic you show above.... isn't that from an eariler version of Juno long since discontinued ? I thought they eliminated the whole browser-email client combo half a dozen years ago (with version 7.0 or something), even thought they (temporarily ?) supported those using the earlier, fuller software versions (like 5.33). Did they bring it back ?

I also use a different ISP than Juno for the web. In fact I haven't tried getting on the web via Juno for several years. As to version, all I can tell you is that I am pretty sure version 5.0 it is the most current one I can use with WinMe.
