IE 8 and Opera won't connect - Firefox will

This just suddenly happened. Have tried several things -

Rebooted computer, reboot modem, reboot both

Malware and virus scans are clean

Used crapcleaner, a registry cleaner, ATF cleaner

Deleted history, cookies, etc., started IE up without addons

Restored advanced settings, reset internet explorer settings

Tried different connection settings

Uninstalled and re-installed IE

tried Chrome - won't install

Shut off firewall and antivirus - still no connections

Cleared the DNS cache - whatever that is

Microsoft Fixit doesn't work - needs service pack 3 (which choked with I tried to install)

Running XP, service pack 2

I've done a lot of internet searching and haven't solved the problem yet. Suggestions appreciated.

I honestly believe your problems relate to your not having SP3 installed on your XP computer. Just what do you mean when you say it "choked" when you tried to install?

should not make any difference the service pack. Many computers simply could not install sp3 but if you have done all windows updates you pretty much have the biggest part of sp3 from those regular updates.

I would try to power down and power up in sequence to see if that helps. power off to everything, computers, modem, router, everything connected. Let sit 5 mins, then power up in this order modem first let it get fully lit up, power up router let it get fully lit up, power up computers let them fully load till all activity has stopped then try it.

Do you have a firewall on it? if so it could be something in the firewall settings, but if the power sequence does not work I would just try a quick system restore to the date when it was all working fine that may reset what ever got changed.

Here is the listing from whocrashed. I see that it refers to avast antivirus. When I initially tried to install my new IE* I believe that I had disabled Avast for 10 minutes. But I admit that I have forgotten to disingage it in all of my other actions. I will send this and perhaps I will have time to use your routine above to try uninstalling ie8 again with avast disabled and get back again. If I had any sense, I would have tried system restore. I haven't really done that much with this computer and it likely would have done the trick in the first place. zep et. al.: Sorry I didn't get back sooner but with my limited experience, I was a little leary of doing the uninstall of network adapter. However I finally realized that at worst it would only mess up the laptop and not the other devices that are connected and working on the secured network. So: I just uninstalled and rebooted. The adapter did reinstall but I am still not getting a proper connection although things have slightly changed. The secured network got connected, but did not even ask for the security password and simply went to 'validating identity' and simply hung. It didn't even time out. I checked firefox to see if it was expecting a password there, as was the initial case to get connected to the Guest Network (where I am again now), but it couldn't find the server. You may recall, that previously the issue was that the secured net would ask for the password, but find it unacceptable and give 'limited or no connectivity. Is there a way to force the network to ask for the password?? Any other ideas? Eventually, I will probably find a way to get a knowledgeable person out to my house where they could diagnose this. FYI, I am creating another post about security updates that may tangentially be connected to this thread. I apparently successfully installed sp3 but 'security update' keeps wanting to install it AGAIN! I was worried I might not be able to shut down to reload the adapter, but I was able to cancel the update.

Something simple you might consider trying first... Put IE9 in compatibility mode by clicking the little icon beside the address bar(see below). That will make your IE9 appear to be and supposedly render pages as if it were IE7. It may or may not help but it's easy to try. I can't connect to Photobucket with firefox 3.0 You can't go to the site and Log In? Can you Log in using IE? and still it won't let me upload pic's to my albums. So you are getting logged in, and the pics just won't upload? What does it do? Does it look like it is loading but never finishes or what? I'm confused...sorry. Sue

I'm using the Microsoft firewall and tried turning it off. Have all the updates for SP2. When tried to install SP3, about 2/3 way through it gave some error message and rolled back any changes.

The bad this is I tried a system restore to sometime last month. It wouldn't work either. Just said it couldn't do it. I've had this computer for several years. Probably needs to be wiped clean and everything reloaded. But I have a lot of stuff to save somewhere. Might be a good excuse to get a second hard drive as backup storage.

I believe I've tried that power up and down sequence, but will try again to be sure.
