Sources for Subway Tile for Bathroom Redo + Some Questions

Im looking redo the tile in my shower with a somewhat irregular white subway tile. I really liked this Ken Manson Tile, but at 19.75 a sq ft, its way too expensive.

What else is out there?

Also, Does anyone know of any replacement toilet or sink which would work?

Should I move the toilet plumbing so it is in the middle of that wall?

The current tile seems to be placed right over the plaster walls, so that will need to be fixed, but everything in the bathroom with the exception of the tub is getting replaced.

It looks gorgeous!

I really wanted irregular subway tile, but was unable to find anything that looked like what you posted for anything other than the prices you mention. I serched high and low, went to every tile shop in the N NJ area, called NYC shops... hence it took me 3 years to settle on a tile.

I opted for a 5" square tile with that same kink of look, but only I think about $6 sqft. If you end up finding it for less, don't tell me, I don't want to know.

Ultimately I love love the tile and the shape, I mounted it in a subway pattern, and am very happy. $20 sq ft was just not the budget, I had other things I was spending on. Your pics are definitley one of the groupings that I considered- love that glass, I know what it looks like in person, I think I have a small board of the same somewhere in a pile in the basement.

For our first main bath reno, I used the tile I link below- much cheaper, not exactly like the pic you posted, but had a feel that was similar to me. I think I paid around $6 for this one.

Is there enough room to sit with the toilet close to the door? If not, then that would be the only reason I can think of to go to lengths to move it. I know code sometimes mandates area around toilets, per Mongo's mention but I am not sure.

Look at Emser Tile's Classica line. Hand-molded-looking subways and an extensive line of trims for around $4.00/SF -- only white or cream though. But IMO, a very nice tile that looks much more expensive than it is.

You've left nothing out that I need to know. I was referring to what you'd posted in your other thread, about the tile detaching from the mud bed. As for tearing it out, it depends on what you want to do. If you're going to replace the tile, cover the tub (so you don't chip it with falling tile) and take a pry bar, and get behind the tile and pop it. I would imagine once you pop one, the rest of the wall will fall. However, if you want to try and save the tile to reuse it, you might think about doing as lazygardens suggested, and cut the grout joints and remove the tiles carefully. The easiest way to do this would be with a Dremel tool, and their little 1 inch diamond wheel. It does a much better job than their grout kit. No matter which way you go, though, anything detached from the mud bed must be removed. I have a feeling once you get started, you'll quickly realize you don't have a choice in that matter.

I like them. Though I do agree with you, that if you were Samantha and could twitch your nose to do a redo, I'd match the grout colour to the tiles. But, I would definitely not do it over now! Linelle is right, and as others have pointed out, once the niches are jam-packed you won't give it another thought! You have no idea how much work and how much I fussed over the mosaic limestone back to my niche. Can barely even see it. In fact my sister just saw it for the first time, and as she has JUST finished re-tiling her BR by herself, she was totally closely inspecting ours. I don't think she even noticed the limestone in the niche.

Removing tub and making larger shower is not an option. They are across the room from each other. Making shower larger would require moving toilet and that's definitely not in the budget. I do not use if often, but when I want to use it, I love that I have it. I don't have a lot of time for it, but I do love taking a bath now and then. Even if money were no object removing tub is not something I would do. I would be willing to replace it with a soaking tub. I don't really care about the jacuzzi part. I don't even turn it on because I like bubbles. So, I could look at a soaking tub, but I'm pretty sure that's just not going to be in the budget. Unfortunately, there isn't much room in the budget at all. I'm not crazy about the reglazing option. I don't think I'd be happy with that (and I know DH wouldn't). I think I'd rather leave it as is and work around it. I can look into cost of a soaking tub, but I think I'm going to have to make this work. Hopefully, my tile choice can make it not stand out so badly. What if I buy extra tile for the tub decking (which is not very big). Then if I could change it out later, I would have the tile to redo the surround. Or maybe when I could change it out I could use a slab of something that matches tile on floor? Or try to find another granite slab that would go with counter?
