Vista info.

I am now using a borrowed Vista machine while deciding what to do with my old X-P box. I am unable to determine how to close the computer. The last few days I have been unplugging it. I am certain there is a better way, I just don't know what it is.
Thanks for any and all help.

Press the round button on the taskbar.. then look at this pic..

Or you can click the desktop and hold down ALT key and press F4 ... might need to do that twice - and you should get a popup to select how to shutdown / restart / sleep...

Wanda, your tureen is different from the OP's tureen. Your's is the more common style, bringing about $300 to possibly $400 if everything is there....the OP's tureen is the round one with the dolphin handles.....very rare....worth well more than $1,000 is in perfect condition.

Junita, Please comnsider easing into this. By your description, your new system is extremely powerful and has an abundance of available rsources. Could it be that your haste and concern in paring all your targets is a byproduct of your previous system? I personally tended to act that way when I purchased the new one. I haven't read any reports of great concern with the Vista firewall. It is bi-directional and apparently works adequately. I left my Windows Defender enabled and update it regularly. Again from what I read it performs more than adequately. With a new quad core system resources and power are more than plentiful to run it in the background. I took Norton off the first day. win7 64bit not reading Vista CD

I did try a music CD as well and nothing happened. Couldn't see a directory or play it. Today I put a clean CD in; a format menu box popped up; did that. Then dragged some folders to it (using Windows Explorer option). They copied. Popped out the CD and put in the old "unreadable" one and the burn menu showed again but this time with additional option to view contents, lo, there were all the folders. Why windows explorer couldn't read it before? Now the problem is trying to open a .jpg to view. When I click on one (I use IrfanView) all the filenames turn pale and the CD spins, and spins, and spins. The cursor remains as an hourglass. When I try to close the explorer window a message saying program not responding shows up and I choose end process to get the explorer window to close. I'm wondering if the old Roxio program I used to burn the CDs is the problem. Don't have Roxio on this computer.

Open your 'My Documents' folder and also open the 'My Documents' folder in the win.old folder. Right click on the task bar and select 'show windows side by side'. It should then be easy to drag your files from the old folder into the new.

For future consideration:

I haven't thought about it to check in W7 and W8, but in all the prior versions that I can recall a C-A-D will provide a portal to shut down either by a selection or by doing the C-A-D twice.

Just checked on my W7 here at work and it too provides a portal to shutdown.

Steve... you might also want to try this. Right click on the Start button. Click on Properties... Click button for Classic Start menu... Click Apply. Left click on the Start button and you should see shutdown at the bottom of the menu box and go from there.
