I haven't had a range in 23 years. Help me pick one

This house was built in 1n 1987 and my DH had and induction cook top installed (from Sears) After 20 years of cleaning ranges in military housing each time we moved I was sick of them. I have LOVED it (so easy to clean and cook) but we are finally getting the kitchen gutted on July 12 and all new cabinets, appliances,granite counter top and flooring put in. My old laminate counter top has two hunks missing on the edge. Everyone says the induction cook top probably won't last much longer and I should replace it.

DH wanes to keep it. (he NEVER cooks) My DD, who lives with us, wants a range with an oven. I always used a microwave/convention oven but that gave out Christmas Eve and we replaced it with a smaller one.

I have no idea what range to buy. Our kitchen is just a galley kitchen. Any suggestions? It has to be electric and easy to clean. Stainless steel plus a hood to match (I know that is harder to keep clean but the other appliances are SS. I'm 69 and not going to start heavy cleaning now.

If it were me, and I will be 68 on the 14th, I would either keep that cooktop or buy a new induction cooktop.

We have a speed oven that is at eye level and I sure don't miss bending down to put things in the old oven we had that was part of a range. We did buy a 30" below the counter Elux Icon oven/convection oven The big viewing window in it and the fully gliding out shelves make it easy to use even thou it is below the counter but were we doing the kitchen now, I would probably find a wall space for it-----just in case "Giezerhood is not good to us!!!

At any rate , if you must have a range, I would certainly go with an induction range, there is no way the wife or I would go back to a conventional electric cooktop or range, and for the reasons you mentioned, Ease of cleaning, the controllabilty of the cooking---not to mention the speed or the energy savings over a conventional electric cooktop.

I've only had gas ranges for the past 30 years so I can't help you pick out an electric or induction. I just wanted to say that we now have SS appliances and I'm not having trouble keeping them clean. I use the original pledge in the brown can every once in a while when some neanderthal makes finger prints and it cleans them right up without leaving any dreaded smudges. Nice fridge!! I have the armoire style with two freezer drawers also, made by GE. Good luck in your search.

Hi Frank, I must have overlooked this thread and I'm surprise nobody has responded yet. It does seem peculiar that after saturating it three weeks ago with a little top watering two weeks ago and you still have a damp pot. I would definitely not do any watering until it completely dries out. When a pot does not dry out one starts to suspect that the root system is not pulling any water out of the pot. I guess I'd like to ask you a few questions about the plant. Is that a very recent picture? That is was it taken in the last couple of days? If it is just a few days old the plant looks very good so far. The leaves are nice and shiny. If you could check the leaves and see if they are limp or crisp and tell me, that would help a lot also. Although I see quite a bit of perlite in the potting medium I'm still wondering if the soil is too dense. I would recommend about 1/3 perlite, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 potting soil. And maybe even a little bit more perlite. I'm also having a little trouble of seeing whether there is a clear plastic saucer underneath the pot. Is there any chance that the water in the reservoir is touching the bottom of the pot and thus keeping the soil wet? Forgive me if this is an obvious simplistic question. I only ask this because I can't see very well and want to make sure that there is not a simple answer to this problem. Anyway if you can answer a few of those questions that would be great. In the meantime do not water the plant anymore until the soil is completely dried out. That is basically how one should treat an African violet anyway. Little maintenance watering from the top is never a good idea. The violet should be watered well and then allowed to dry out before the next watering. I hope this helps, Larry

deanie I did the exact same thing and had similar experiences. You have to put yourself in their shoes - how can they possibly give you an exact number without knowing the specifications for the house and what your quality requirements are for the finishing materials? I used the square footage ball parks for rough budgetary planning. The contract price won't be known until you have a plan (so they can do a take off) and you have made selections on the finishing materials. The end cost won't be known until the house is finished. Note that many posters on the GW have had a large (10 to 20%) difference between the contract price and the finished cost. I would use the ballpark numbers to get an idea of the range of house you might possibly afford. If you can barely afford a certain square footage now at the planning stage - then beware - becuase the house will likely cost much more than your ball park estimate. The residential builders have volume on their side to keep costs down. They do have higher overhead, but don't assume that custom means lower cost. Custom building is at least the same cost (but usually higher) than large residential builders for the equivalent square footage. But a custom builder customizes the product to your requiremments and should provide much better quality (assuming you pick a good builder). Residential is a production line, with a limited set of menu options,and quality that can range from crap to decent. The ball parks you have sound reasonable for Tenn. Just add 20% to the highest number you have received and that should be good enough to determine if what you want to build is possibly achievable. If you can't make the the budget close with this - then you might either pick a smaller house plan or think about trades on materials (like siding vs brick/stone). Also - keep in mind that there may be more costs that are not included with the builder square footage numbers. They may be quoting you costs for the structure only. Ask them if the ballpark figures include everything including site development (lot clearing, septic, driveways, etc). I found that most of the builders quoted me square footage numbers that did not include these items - and they can be significant depending on your lot and utility situation.

It is tremendously fun, joyful, to read the messages on the board from my professional perspective--and I don't mean in a snickering, "aren't they dumb" way. I learn a lot about what people "hear" and how the language works, etc. it helps me do my job; and it interests me greatly. One lesson is that communication happens even WITH misspellings, using the wrong homonym, mangled metaphors or idioms. Oddly enough, I'm even considering writing a book about it--about what sorts of richness is in the language of misspellings. My favorite is the woman at another organizing board who titled her post "Moving Whoas" I expected to find an account of all the things that were slowing down or interuptting her move--but no, what she meant was that moving was hard, difficult--"moving WOES" But "moving whoas" is MUCH more interesting; much more proactive. What a great attitude--to greet difficulties not by sayin "woe is me," but by saying, "whoa, look at that!" It is fun. I try never to correct anyone (though I've occasionally told someone to trust themselves more bcs they *did* spell a word right; or if they've indicated they'd be willing to know the answer, I might tell it to them) I figure, who wants to have someone "grading their English paper"online!

Only advice is go see a gynecologist. Insist on a thyroid panel. I too started about the 4th grade. One year about 13-14 I started having continuous flow. The doctor put me on birth control pills and thyroid. Your mention of Japan made the connection because of the use of seaweed and fish in the Japanese diet. Do not be shocked if the doctor suggests that you have a D&C. You may have a build up of tissue and/or a partial blockage of your cervix. Many doctors will tell you it is just stress. Which it could be but for your own health have it checked out.

If you want a free standing range, the Kenmore unit is quite good or the GE. An Electrolux free standing is also supposed to show up later this year or you can get a panel kit(?) to use with their present slide in. Since you are an induction pioneer, there is no way you would want anything else!

From what I've learned on GW, induction is the ONLY way to go if you're going electric. You want ease of cleaning--there's no cooktop easier to clean than induction. There have been posters on this forum and under Kitchens who have been very happy with their Kenmore induction ranges. Good luck!

Thank you everyone! I have been looking and looking and searching the internet. We went back to Best Buy today and I got this Frigidaire range ~ $1,529.99 Sale price. That's cheaper than all the other induction tops I saw. It has two induction burners on the right and 2 electric elements on the left. It has a ceramic top so I'll have to be more careful keeping it clean but I hope that won't be a problem. It has a convention mode, also, plus lots of other stuff. In alternate view 1 you can see the whole range with all the doors open. You can check out the link if you're interested. There are different views at this site. We don't really have a lot of options on an island so I felt this was the best choice. I'll have to wait until the 26th to have everything delivered.

Well, congratulations Dorothy.....I have followed this topic because I, too, have not bought a range in a long, long time. Forty years, to be exact and ironically, this range FPEF3081KF is the one I choose. (Just slightly different features.) It was delivered yesterday so I have no pros or cons right now but the front of this one, like yours, is beautiul.(Professional Series) Hope your delivery is on time and that you enjoy your selection.
