Mouse works automatically

I've got a Sony laptop (runs on XP) that is driving me mad simply because the mouse is somehow set on auto. If the mouse stops over anything even for a very short period it automatically opens up that link/tab without being clicked. That maybe something useful to some people but for me even if I pause to think about whatever I'm reading it opens up another page or link that I don't want. I don't know how to change the settings to stop it being auto - can anyone help please?

Go to start, control panel, click on printers and other hardware, then click on mouse and the mouse settings screen comes up.

Thanks for your help. I went into the mouse icon but wasn't too sure which settings to change. Under Device Settings I made the palm check a bit higher and also the touch sensitivity a bit higher so now I think the mouse will be less sensitive. I'll know better when I've used it a bit more.

Jazzy, I said what I said. I've never seen a case where a working mouse went south. Shoot, anything's possible. My comment wasn't based on a Google search, that's information everyone has and should be anyone's first stop when there's a problem. That info was there for you, not for me. Stopping Windows updates and cementing use of a obsolete version so that a $10 mouse can function is a very unwise approach. I'll stick to my first recommendation, buy a new mouse and keep your Windows installation current with all updates.

I have an older under-sink sump-pump in the basement of a rental property. It is used to drain the laundry tub. It used to go on/off automatically when there was water in the sink, but now you have to turn it on/off manually, which is a major pain for doing laundry! Are there any common causes/solutions for this? In case it helps, its on/off switch is on a cord - when it is plugged in, it goes on regardless of whether the switch is on or off... Thanks!

Mouse not working on Toshiba laptop

Well, it is not the toggling fn+f5, it has nothing to do with a wireless mouse. I have run my AV, checked to see if there was a conflict with any other program, there is not. Wen I start up regularly my mouse will not work, I can move the mouse around on the screen, but as far as clicking on anything, I can't. My laptop is a Toshiba L655D, I have not downloaded anything new prior to the mouse not working. I did d/l a driver for the touchpad from Toshiba's support site. The keyboard mouse/touchpad only works in SAFE MODE. And, I had a wireless mouse, I had changed the battery, checked for drivers, etc. In an act of frustration I threw the wireless mouse against the wall, that was the end of the wireless mouse. Oh my gosh, Pal, how unbelievable that they would chew through that concrete! It makes me shudder just thinking about it. And those being rats, not mice. Thank goodness you knew what to do. Busy: Yellowjackets are scary, as they can be so aggressive. Oakley, I would have done the exact same thing! Mdln: that can is what we used. I bought it at Home Depot for $8.95, which is expensive. I was glad to get something engineered to work for rodents, though, so I wasn't' arguing the price that day (LOL). But, this stuff is injected into holes via a long, plastic tube. It hardens fairly quickly, which is good for the hole, but makes the tube unusable soon after. So, have a game plan before you start and fill everything quickly. Wet paper towels, a sturdy paper plate and a metal spatula to smooth out the foam worked best for us. I had to use Goof Off to get it off of the spatula, though. Tibbie: I'm kind of concerned, as I pick up our new furkid on Wednesday afternoon, which is just 2 days from now. I need to make sure nothing harmful such as mousetraps, etc. (we don't use poisons) are around for him to get into. P.S. I'll try to post pics of my new boy on Thursday.

Being old and resistant to change I never could master that mouse thing on a laptop I have, SO , I hooked up an external mouse to it. In some aspects this defeats the purpose of the lap top, but it's never in my lap anyway. I even use a external keyboard. Grady

You might try an Update for your mouse.

Start - control panel - open system icon - Hardware -
Device manager - (if you can) left click the Plus sign in front of mice and other pointing devices - right click the name of your mouse -
Click Update and follow directions.
You will need the CD that came with your computer.

Also try -

Start - Run - Type - chkdsk /r - OK
Don't forget the space between K /
After you click on Y for yes and
Type - exit - and press the Enter Key.
You can now Restart your computer to begin chkdsk /r
