@caps54 - Haha, oh god, I'm pregnant with my first and I was such a crazy child. Now I'm going to be worried about them launching themselves off the dresser and the like..

I just read a lot of cavalier comments, but the thought of actually losing a child or a major injury happening to a child is unthinkable. Little ones are clueless when it comes to their own safety and it is our responsibility to keep them safe. The school of thought that is ok for a kids to get a few bumps and bruises along the way is ridiculous because how does anyone know if falling down the stairs or bumping their heads on the corner of a table will result in a little boo-boo or a life-threatening injury. You don't. Every parent has their level of risk that they will tolerate. Is a broken bone acceptable? It wasn't for me. We paid for a consultation and did the work ourselves. And if you think that you looking at the world through the eyes of a child is equal to having a certified professional check out your home, you are fooling yourself. Chances are high that nothing really bad will happen in your home. Chances are also high that most people won't have a bad auto accident with their kids in the car. But you still need to buckle them in because even if the chance is one-tenth of one percent, it isn't worth any risk if the outcome could be catastrophic. Let the kids get their bumps amd bruises where things are out of your control, like on the playground or playing sports...not in their own homes. I have an adult friend who fell out of a second story window when she was 3. She was lucky she survived. So, yes, most of us survive. But our children's survival should be based on more than luck. Do the best you can do within your means.

I have a four year old with autism and 1year old twins I'm raising alone, I try to see everything that my four year old is doing but many times she is off in her own world while I am tending to her brother and sister. This has her left to her own defenses five to ten min sometimes, if I didn't know what to look for to keep her safe because she really isn't a child that will respond to my call or being told no sometimes. Her concept of danger and being hurt are not there. It is a wonderful
Thing to have a service out there to help teach us how to keep our children safe. It is humorous at first to think of the common sense involved in safety , but when you are a tired parent that is on auto pilot most of the time we won't look for the small cracks in the safety fortress we think we built, but kids will find them. Ten and twenty, thirty years ago and further back than that ,parents might have watched their children grow but they did not .child proofing could be the single best advantage ever given a child
