IE 7 shutting down when clicking on a link

I searched this forum but didn't find this problem listed. I can click on regular links such as the other forums listed at the top but when I click on a link in a post, the computer closes the window & sends an error report & I have to start all over.

I've run virus scans, cleared the cookies/history & rebooted but it's still doing it. This is a PC, not a laptop if that matters. Thanks for any advice.

If not you might right click and copy and paste it into the browser url/address field.

Its a microsoft support page for xp/ie7 that covers some basic fix it steps for most problems in ie7 . Which are clear cookies, forms, history, cache, etc. Plus how to start it without plug-ins and reset settings to default.

Thanks. I could copy & paste your link but at that site, I can't open any of their links because my computer closes down & goes back to the desktop when I do.

Alright, I checked out "Application" first & found: a whole bunch of "Information", many "Warning" which had "Symantec AntiVirus" a few times, in large batches during a single day, "Ms Installer" a couple/few times, in batches of probably two, & "Userenv" everyday, in batches of two, right around the time I usually shut down the computer. When I clicked on such, I got the following: Event Type: Warning Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1517 Date: 1/18/2007 Time: 7:35:42 AM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: E58AEB3F9A6342E Description: Windows saved user E58AEB3F9A6342E\Owner registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. So I went there & was validated. Then I downloaded & installed, & I'm positive I ran, the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. Then I tried shutting down & the computer still hung at "Saving Settings" & needed turned off manually! The other thing I got under "Application" was a few "Error" & each one was "Application Error". I checked out "Security" but there was only "Success audit". I checked out "Internet Explorer" and there was nothing. I checked out "System" and there was a whole bunch of "Information", several "Error" & each of those were "Service Control Manager", & several "Warning" & most of those were "tcpip", plus a few "W32Time". I haven't checked out any of the other "Warning" & "Error". I don't know what to do b/c I'm computer-illiterate. I think I'll just print all this out after submitting my reply & take such to Best Buy during the computer's annual checkup under our performance service plan/extended warranty, which is in May & let the Geek Squad deal with it.

Mikie, I doubled click the eye and got a Private Report dialog box that read To view a sites privacy summary, select in the list and then click summary. www://webkinz.com/style.css was listed and to the right it said blocked. I highlighted and clicked summary and got Privacy Policy dialog box that read...Could not find a privte policy for www://webkinz.com/style.css To view this sites privacy policy contact the website directly. Also in that dialog box at the bottom it reads..How should cookies from "webkinz . com be handled"? --Compare cookies privacy policy to my settings --Always allow this site to use cookies --Never allow this site to use cookies The first one was checked. How much RAM (memory) do you have? Click Start/Control Panel/System and check at the bottom of the small window if you do not know. Are you on dial up or high speed internet? When you say you open more windows, is this tabs or more instances of IE7? Tabbed browsing is a new feature of IE7 that allows more screens within the single instance of IE7 Are you deliberately running other programs in the background like cancer research or other distributed computing programs? You might try checking you are up to date with Norton then running the full suite of scans to be sure you have no unneeded company using your computer without your knowledge.

Basically he has built you a new computer and I think that is great that he can do that. Does he know about the problem and is unsure of a fix or would you prefer to find the answer without his knowledge and not embarrass him? Either way from the little we have I suspect that perhaps the power supply is not big enough or the cooling fan over the heatsink on the CPU is not up to the job. Was this originally a factory built computer? If so provide the make and model please so we can see what parts are left from the original computer. If you are comfortable it would help if you removed the left side panel (likely held on by 2 screws needing a screwdriver) we need the make and model of the power supply and the output watts listed, that is the big metal box at the top rear of the cabinet with all the wires sticking out of it. While the side is off do you have a small fan that you could place on the desk blowing inwards while the computer runs? This will be temporary to see if this is heat related, if it is cutting out frequently it should not take too long to check the heat issue if it is there. Any chance you know the make and model of the new motherboard? It will be stamped on the board if you do take the side off.

I might in you shoes try starting up in safe mode with networking & then go back to that page and seeing if clicking links works to get you through their IE self help pages.

Safe mode is accessed when immediately first starting your computer by holding down or tapping on the F8 key - which will bring your to a window with the option to start in safe mode,,,, you'll need with networking for a dsl or cable or satellite. Dial up modem I think would work in normal Safe mode, with no networking needed.

did this just recently start happening? did it work fine say a week ago? If you answer yes then probably the easiest thing for you to do is simply go back in time to a date that it was working fine for you. This is very easy and simple to do.
Click start>all programs>accessories>system tools> system restore. Open system restore and choose to go back to a previous date, it will open a calendar that has some dates and times showing when you have restore points saved, select one of those dates and restore points when your IE was working fine and tell it to restore the pc to that restore point, it will tell you to reboot do that and it will then set your pc back to the settings from that time.

The other option is download and use firefox browser.

It just started happening a couple of days ago however, I recently got DSL with a local company & had email issues with my old dial-up provider which I kept because I wanted to keep my old email & toolbar so I'm hesitant to go back in time if that will change any of the settings I did to correct those problems.

I don't want to spend more hours with India, if you know what I mean. Will that change those new settings?

Oh, and if I download Firefox, will I lose my favorites?

firefox will ask you during the install if you would like to copy your IE favorites to firefox you just say yes and it will copy them over so you will have them on both. If you happen to miss that step you can import them at any time.

As to the other question if you move back in time to a date that was after your dsl change over no you would not loose any of that; if you used a date prior to those dsl set ups you might lose some. If your IE started acting up after the dsl change then you could just try to guesstimate a date when you think the IE was doing fine. However each go back in time can be easily reversed after the fact if it does not help or messes something else up. in that link it also tells you how to revert back too I believe.
