Think about actually putting more or better lighting in the room. That can make a huge difference. You know, a couple sconces, maybe a couple of recessed lights in the ceiling, or something more creative if you're up to it. I've seen a few cool lighting solutions in bathrooms - I especially like the ones where there a several (6-7) small lights hanging from the ceiling, very cute but definitely different. A lot of people like to use mirrors to make the space seem larger, but I personally don't like the "hall of mirrors" look. Maybe consider just a semi-large mirror over the vanity. I think in a small bathroom it's better to go with larger tile, and that seems to be the general consensus (although it always boils down to personal taste). I'm not sure the vanity color would make a difference, but I think the size and style of it would.

I always thought one was supposed to go with smaller tiles in smaller space so everything is more proportional (i.e. kind of like condo-size furniture in a, well, condo). Taken to an extreme, if you had particularly large tiles in a small room, you might only have one or two grout lines showing. Better for cleaning, but wouldn't it look a bid odd?

Thanks for the response. You are correct that new and more lights will help. For a floor of this size, how large a tile will work? I was thinking originally of a a chocolate brown tiel floor and white furniture style cabinet, but I wonder if the dark floor would make the bathroom seem even smaller.

I think tile that's too small and busy might make the space seem crowded?

We have extremely small bathrooms and I'm planning on using 6" tile on the floors. We used 6" slate on the sunroom floor and like it. My bath floor will be a dark gray, but the rest of the room will be mostly white, so I think just the floor darker is okay.

We put 12" porcelain in the entry downstairs and had it run into the powder room. It was a bit harder to cut and fit the larger tiles into that small space. But it looks nice and it worked in the end.

We are in the process of designing a similar sized bathroom (6'X7')with no natural light. We have chosen to go with a light beige bigger tile for the wall(10"X20") and are deciding between a medium tone or dark tone 12"X12" for the floor. We figured that the horizontal wall tile will make the room look more spacious and anything smaller than a 12X12 for the floor will not be proportionate with the big wall tile. FWIW, we are really novices here trying to learn as we go along...so take my words with a big pinch of salt!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Palimpsest--when you say low contrast, do you mean that there shouldn't be a strong contrast in colors of floor and wall tile? I am afraid of too monotone a space. Please see the link below for the kind of look I've been contemplating. I like the contrast between the dark floor and the light vanity.

Can you install a Solatube? We put one in our kitchen and it's really amazing how much natural light it lets in!

Our tiny, half bath has no windows, about 5 feet by 4.25 feet, 7.5 foot celing. It looks much bigger and lighter after my renovation.

I would definitely stay with light colors, and use colors from the natural world, soft blues, greens, taupes. Cool colors recede. There is a very light sky blue on the ceiling. Natural light wood for your cabinetry, if any. The cabinet you show is good, light wood, simple sleek lines, but I don't like the dark floor. A pedestal sink or a floating vanity or one on legs so you can see the floor, adds visual space.

Outdoor elements in your decor: plants, polished pebbles, shells, birds.

I like the idea of numerous tiny lights dangling from the ceiling. I've also seen strip lights behind crown molding, with a gap between that and the ceiling. The ceiling looks luminous and floating - you don't see where it meets the walls. But one wall sconce was enough in my bath, once I did it in light colors.

Some wallpapers also blur boundaries. I used Thibaut Augustine with hummingbirds and grasses and was astonished by the spacious effect it gave; I just got it because I like hummingbirds.

For some reason, stone, even light stone, always looks heavier and darker to me than tiles. Just one color on the floor, and a pattern that keeps the eye moving, diagonal, hexagonal, staggered.
