Candy Cakes

One of my friends, Rhoda of Southern Hospitality Blog gave instructions on how to make these on her blog. I tried it today.......was so much fun! Thought I would share with everyone. Easy & make great Christmas decor! I am doing more tomorrow. :) Bonnie

Bonnie, aren't you just a clever little lady tonight. I love your candy cakes. So happy Rhonda shared with you so you could make some and share with us.

Are these made out of cake? I thought they were strofoam trees with icing and candy added.

Tell us all the details. I can tell by your post you loved creating these and will be ready to start more early tomorrow. Punk

I'm sorry Punk. I am calling them whatever name pops in my mind. LOL! Rhoda calls them Christmas Candy Trees, I think. They are on the November 21st post on Southern Hospitality Blog. You are very correct....just strofoam & icing made with powdered eggs whites & confection sugar plus Christmas candy. Glad you like them.....thanks so much for the your sweet compliments on them. Yes, they sooooooo fun to make. I printed out Rhoda's instructions before I started & unwrapped all the candies. She said gumdrops did great but couldn't find gumdrops in our town in Christmas colors. I did candy canes, life savers in Christmas color, stars in the same colors, some of the candies even on a cardboard piece like you buy to put on a birthday cake but they were Christmas pieces. She used some choc. scottie dogs also which were darling.....Have fun with it & let me know if you have any more questions. Bonnie

I had a lifelong addiction to sweets. I knew it often did wicked things to my blood sugar levels (and my weight), but I wasn't motivated to deal with the issue until it was pointed out to me that my dangerously high triglycerides were caused by excess carbohydrate consumption. Apparently "excess" is a relative term, depending on the person in question. I was taking in more carbs than my body could handle. I didn't wean myself off sugar. I couldn't stop smoking that way, and I couldn't give up sugar that way. I was highly addicted to both, and the only way I could stop either was cold turkey. I can relate to your feelings of depression...I was in a bad mood for weeks (maybe longer), but when I reached the point where I was no longer craving sweets it felt sooo good! In the beginning I couldn't even think about life without ice cream or chocolate, so I had to concentrate on "one day at a time." Now, almost nine years later, I'm not even tempted. I keep ice cream in the house for other people, and when I dish it up I don't even lick the spoon. I've had to be really strict about this, though. While I occasionally indulge in other kinds of carbs--bread, etc.--candy, cakes, etc., are absolutely no allowed. Not even a bite. It's the only way I can be free of cravings, and it's well worth it. Incidentally, I haven't substituted artificial sweeteners. I can't tolerate Nutra-Sweet, I don't trust Splenda (it tastes way too sweet to me anyway), and I like to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. When you don't eat "sweets," it's amazing how many foods taste somewhat sweet on their own. Best of luck! Susan

Sue: After reading your latest post about your husband never doing things for you on Vday or your birthday, I just had to post about what my then husband did one year. All the guys he worked with were talking about what they were getting their wives for Vday, and when he said "nothing", they started in on him. They embarrassed him so much that on Vday, he brought me a box of chocolate covered cherries. He went to work and very proudly told the guys. He should have just shut his mouth but he had to 'brag' that the candy did double-duty as it was also for my birthday on the 15th. They razzed him for a long time over his cheapness. It was the ONLY time though that he ever got me anything for either day. Ahem, do you think that might be part of the reason he's my ex? lol Shirley

Alexa- I did the same thing. The first time, I followed the box/can recipe. The second time I made them, I tried to glam them up, I guess, by making scratch cake/homemade frosting. Same crowd of eaters, basically. Honest-to-goodness, I think the box/can was a bigger hit!! LOL! Oh well! Given how labor intensive these are, relatively speaking, I guess the box/can saves some time! I love the fact that I can make hundreds of them when I make them and freeze what I don't use. I do love these things, though!!

So cute Bonnie..They look so real, it would be hard to convince the Gkids they're only to 'look at'...
They have a hard time with the faux fruit...lol

Reminds me of when I was a Scout Leader, and we made the Gingerbread Houses using Milk Cartons..the same icing and lots of candy!... one for the house...one for me..lol

Thanks Jane & Luvs! After I unwrapped all that candy, it was easy to keep my mouth shut as Rhoda pointed out you had to work fast as the icing dried a bit so I was concentrating on icing & placing candy quickly so didn't have time to think about eating any. ha! I did have some chocolate candy that was in the candy jar in the FR though....us girls have to keep up our strength,huh?

Very pretty, I have also made them using the wafer ice cream cones turned upside down. Mine were setting on top of a cake I made once. I really like the way you have them displayed ")

How cute! You did a great job, and it looks like it would be a great project to do with kids. It reminds me, I have a gum drop tree somewhere in my kitchen. Thanks for sharing.
