Ashley's Baby shower Cake

OK, so I'm behind. Way, way behind. I finally got Photobucket beaten back into submission, and so we're back to my not all that well forcused pictures, I know you've all missed them, LOL.

Anyway, I got a silicone mold that you use with fondant and made a little fondant baby for the top of the cake. The pink petals were all done by hand and here they are, getting dry and waiting to be placed on the cake:

Here it is, the pumpkin cake posted here, and it was well worth making again, very moist and dense and covered with maple flavored buttercream and the fondant decorations:

I also struggled with some of those blasted rose cupcakes, I just can't seem to get the hang of them, but I prevailed, and made red velvet cupcakes with buttercream frosting:

We had ham and au gratin potatoes, homemade rolls, the usual stuff. Here's the happy Mom-To-Be:

the Princess, wearing her favorite fashion accessory, a tutu that Ashley made. And yes, that's Elery behind her with the mustache, which has been subsequently shaved off. Again.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, the baby is a girl and her name is going to be:

You did an AMAZING job on that cake and those cupcakes! WOW!!! Very professional! :) Still CANNOT believe Ashley is old enough to be married and expecting! So excited for her!

"I always thought you were not supposed to put where a person is registered on an invitation. And especially not ask for gifts. But oh well." The entire point of a baby or wedding shower is to "shower" the guest of honor with presents, so putting the registry information in with the invitation is typically considered appropriate. It's events that are NOT specifically oriented toward the gifts, such as the wedding itself or a graduation party, where open reference to gifts is inappropriate. Did anyone else think a shower invitation from the cousin's daughter-in-law, whom the OP has met maybe three times, is casting the "gimme" net just a tad far out? Maybe if OP and cousin were very close friends, sure, but good grief! My standard shower gift is onesies. Lots and lots of plain white onesies, because my baby brother (now changing his own kids' diapers, how time flies!) could easily go through a dozen in a day. Budget is pretty much always around $25 unless it's a really close friend, because that's what MY budget can afford. If you shop right you can get a lot of onesies for $25! (I think my record is 10 6-packs that had been put on clearance for $2.50 a bag, down from $10, because the packages were ripped up. So I took them out of the packages, folded them nicely into a pretty box, and went merrily off to the shower - where I got in a viciously polite whispered argument with the host because I refused to play the "baby food tasting" game *retch*). Kiddo often outgrows them well before they wear out anyway. No one I know has done the "clothesline" although I do think it would be pretty cool to do a clothesline specifically to donate to the local women's shelter, and put that right on the invitation; I do find it very ironic that my lower-middle-class family ("you might be a redneck if...") thinks wishing wells are tacky. Diapers can be tricky, unless a specific type is noted on the registry, because of that whole cloth-vs-disposable thing. There are some verrrrry strong feelings on that subject! I do appreciate registries, both for weddings and baby showers, if I'm not very close to the recipient because it tells me what the recipients are interested in - I don't necessarily need to purchase something off the list, but if I see 20 Winnie the Pooh items on a baby shower list, that tells me that Mum is diggin' Pooh and might appreciate some mint-condition vintage Pooh books to read to her child or decorate a shelf in the nursery. It also does indicate to me what's NOT really welcome. For instance, if I see on the registry that everything the parents chose is either khaki, sage, and/or cream (such as at the last shower I attended), it's a pretty good bet that the parents are unlikely to be overly enthusiastic over primary colors or the old pink/blue routine.

Made a trial run and it was so good that 8 WOMEN polished off a 3" high 10" cake in one sitting - no kidding. Used the marble rum scented cake on epicurious as the base cake, with a rum flavored simple syrup to keep it moist. I baked one cake in a 10 pan, then when cool, cut off the top to get a nice flat base and split the cake into two layers. I made a rum flavoured chocolate mouse as the filling between the layers then froze the cake for a couple of ours. I used my buttercream frosting recipe with vanilla and rum (double quantity) and did a crumb coat followed by 20 minutes in the fridge, then piped the roses. That was a bit of a challenge. The ones on the side kept falling off. Finally got them to stick by pushing in a little with the bag but then I lost the wrist movement so they didn't come out so well. The top was fine but as Tracey says, spacing was an issue. For the shower cake I am planning on doing the OUTSIDE ring of flowers first then filling in the center. After all that, I forgot to take a picture of the finished cake but my kids were yelling that it was better than Cake Boss LOL (and they love him so much my 11 yo DS called to order a birthday cake from them - thank Gd he didn't have my cc LOL and couldn't really place it but that's another story) Here's my frosting recipe: 10 oz. butter, room temperature 1/8 tsp. salt 20 oz. icing sugar 1 Tbsp sour cream 1-2 tbsp. flavoring, vanilla, lemon, rum etc beat butter on low for 1 minute then gradually increase speed to 10 and beat for 5 minutes. Dump in entire amount of sugar and stir to incorporate. Add sour cream and flavorings and beat on med-high for 2-3 minutes. Switch to whisk and whisk for 8-10 minutes on high. it pipes borders and stars etc like a dream, but to pipe rose petals etc, either chill down your piping equipment or fill your piping bag with the buttercream then place it in the fridge for 5 minutes, this just solidifies the butter enough to pipe stiffer roses or more detailed work - if possible place cake back in fridge - 20 mins is sufficient to set the shape - it's not necessary, sometimes there isn't time, but it certainly aids in the portability of the cakes

I wasn't there, so I didn't taste it. Well, I wouldn't have tasted it anyway, because I can't eat sweets. But I'm sure it was delicious! I don't know if she does this professionally or not. I'd say she should, except it's such a labor-intensive thing that it must be hard to receive any kind of decent money for all that time and work. So as you can see, I'm no help at all. :-)

Will you also be serving other food apart from sweets ? I think the fruit is a good idea, although I wouldn't bother dipping it in chocolate (more sweets). I'd also have trays of little moist crustless white bread sandwiches, or those made from a slice of white together with a slice of brown soft bread, again crustless with fillings such as: egg salad & lettuce, pinwheel sandwiches made from cream cheese with an asparagus stick and cut crosswise, stacked and checkerboard sandwiches made from alternate crustless brown and white bread slices filled with patÃ©s and smooth fillings, then cut crossways to make little striped sandwiches, and small glass bowls of pickles and nuts rather than candies. I haven't been to a baby shower for a while (lol) but I'd include other light food besides cake if I were doing it. Here are some ideas from a family buffet we had while on holiday. The food is probably a little too substantial for serving at a baby shower but you might scale down something you see here: - served warm platter. This prepared by a chef friend. Platter includes radishes and plums, decorated with grape leaves. . I'd made miniatures of these. Good Luck ! SharonCb

That was a lot of work but I hope it was fun for you to produce such food art. I know your family so appreciates all you do to go above and beyond the ordinary.

Thank you, thank you, everyone. Actually, I kind of enjoyed making that cake, the fondant really is like working with Play Dough, if it doesn't come out right you just squish it up and do it again. I absolutely freakin' hate doing those cupcakes, though...

Nancy, Ashley sends hugs back and asked me to remind you and Kim that she loves you both. I still have to make it up your way, life's been so crazy busy...

Eileen, she's still off work, no more bed rest because she's due.....tomorrow! She's made three trips to the hospital where contractions stopped and she was sent home. She's "so over it", LOL. Yeah, I have a lot more pictures, I'll get to it, really, I will.

Deb, I can't believe she's that old either. Or that I am! hey, I used the Magic Mill to make the buttercream for the camo wedding cake for my nephew in September too, plus all the dinner rolls for both baby showers. since I can "make so many" with it, both girls are lobbying for me to make some for them to keep on hand in their freezers, LOL.

June, you noted that her due date is TOMORROW? (grin)

Annie, I'm glad you got Photobucket going again, because you will need it soon. Make sure you've got fresh batteries for your camera, too. I have a feeling there will be lots of photo ops in the coming days.

The cake decorations are fantastic! You certainly did an amazing job.

I've peeked at that fondant baby several times and just 'wow'! Now don't make me go look for other shapes.

Wishing Ashley an easy delivery and recovery. Tell her she will once again be able to sleep on her stomach and be able to tie her shoes!

That's a fabulous cake, Annie! I love the baby. You may not like to make them but the rose cupcakes look great.

frankly that fondant baby creeps me out just a little....

Annie, I absolutely love the little fondant baby! Precious. But, I also agree with Linda a bit...sorta creepy it's so life-like.

I've somehow got to try those cupcakes. They are just beautiful. Gosh, I wish somebody around here would eat them but my group doesn't like cake even for b-days. :(

LindaC, it would have been really creepy if someone wanted to eat it, LOL.

CC, I tinted white fondant so it was "flesh colored", and then I used powdered food coloring to paint the hair.

Jessica, they have those molds in everything from soccer balls to flowers to venetian lace for edging, I'm definitely getting more!

Pam, this baby will earn her nickname, just like the Princess and Bruvver did. We won't know it until we meet her, but it will happen.

Thank you, everyone, I've been here at elery's waiting for the phone to ring, I'm just sure she'll go into labor when I'm 3 hours away and scheduled for a birthday party and a holiday soup and dessert open house for Elery's family.

Annie, it is very easy to make your own molds.

If you see an object that you like, you can cast the mold easy.

Get food grade silicone rubber mold compound (eBay), it come in two parts, mix and cast. Sets in one day and it's done.

You can make candy, bake cakes, make jello (yes, I know you like jello LOL) with the mold.

Here's to you Wonder Woman, you really can do it ALL! That cake and the baby is right out of Anne Geddes and I'm not creeped out in the least!

I love your cake and cupcakes and can appreciate how much effort when into everything, especially the cupcakes.

I think the fondant baby is cute and never thought of it as creepy. It reminded me of the baby Jesus that goes into a ring of bread that is baked around Christmas time in Mexico. Whoever gets the baby Jesus when the bread is served has to host the next party. Anyway, I find nothing creepy about the baby, although I would probably take it off the cake before serving it, sort of like how the bride and groom are taken off the wedding cake. I have to say that you did an excellent job of getting the flesh color correct! I think that is difficult to do.

I'm excited to find out when the baby will actually arrive!
