Ashley's Baby shower Cake

OK, so I'm behind. Way, way behind. I finally got Photobucket beaten back into submission, and so we're back to my not all that well forcused pictures, I know you've all missed them, LOL.

Anyway, I got a silicone mold that you use with fondant and made a little fondant baby for the top of the cake. The pink petals were all done by hand and here they are, getting dry and waiting to be placed on the cake:

Here it is, the pumpkin cake posted here, and it was well worth making again, very moist and dense and covered with maple flavored buttercream and the fondant decorations:

I also struggled with some of those blasted rose cupcakes, I just can't seem to get the hang of them, but I prevailed, and made red velvet cupcakes with buttercream frosting:

We had ham and au gratin potatoes, homemade rolls, the usual stuff. Here's the happy Mom-To-Be:

the Princess, wearing her favorite fashion accessory, a tutu that Ashley made. And yes, that's Elery behind her with the mustache, which has been subsequently shaved off. Again.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, the baby is a girl and her name is going to be:

You did an AMAZING job on that cake and those cupcakes! WOW!!! Very professional! :) Still CANNOT believe Ashley is old enough to be married and expecting! So excited for her!

Here's a couple ideas for you... The link I'm sending you has your palm trees of many styles for centerpieces. You will love this website-it's full of ideas, etc. On the home page, click on 'theme decor'on the sidebar-when that comes up-click on Tropical/Luau. Don't know how many tables you have to decorate-but you know the bamboo roller blinds? You could get them in narrower sizes & cut them to fit as table runners-probably would get 2 per shade. Another centerpiece idea might be to get the sheets of green styrofoam & cut into 12' squares-1 per table..as the base. Then cut 1/8 or 1/4' wooden dowels as the 'posts' for a tiki hut that would secure into the 4 corners of the styrofoam. You could cover the foam w/silk palm leaves (as flooring) and then use more of the bamboo shade cut & glued on the top of the dowels as the roof of the tiki hut. Then place your sand/shells on the leaves & maybe 1 larger baby. I would surround the styrofoam's edges (either by poking them in or hot glue)..with tiny orchids. Well, these do have chocolate, but I love the combo of chocolate and raspberries. They're a bit time consuming and fresh raspberries are expensive, but strawberries could be used instead if that's what's available. I've also made chocolate truffles and stirred in raspberry jam for a raspberry chocolate truffle and I've wrapped maraschino cherries with the stems still on in chocolate truffle filling and dipped them into chocolate, a double chocolate hit with a cherry in the middle! Anyway, the raspberry truffle recipe, from an old Gourmet magazine, and it would be nice dipped in white chocolate too: Chocolate-Covered Raspberry Truffles Gourmet : December 2004 Be sure to use bittersweet chocolate with no more than 60 percent cacao for this recipe. Yield: Makes about 50 Active Time: 50 min Total Time: 2 hr (includes chilling) 1/4 cup heavy cream 7 oz fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not extra-bitter or unsweetened), finely chopped in a food processor 1 1/2 tablespoons framboise or brandy(I used raspberry vodka but extract would work too, added to taste) 6 oz fresh raspberries (1 cup) 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Line a tray with wax paper. Bring cream just to a simmer in a 1- to 2-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat. Remove from heat, then add chocolate and stir gently with a heatproof rubber spatula until ganache is smooth. Stir in framboise. Pat raspberries dry if necessary. Add 6 to 8 raspberries to ganache and gently fold in to coat using rubber spatula. Remove each chocolate-covered raspberry with 2 forks, shifting it from one fork to the other to let excess ganache drip off, then transfer to tray. Coat remaining raspberries in same manner, working in batches of 6 to 8. Chill truffles on tray until firm, at least 1 hour, then loosen from wax paper. Put cocoa in a sealable bag and add all of truffles. Seal bag, leaving some air in, and shake to coat. Empty bag into a shallow bowl. Transfer coated truffles to a platter with your fingers, shaking off excess cocoa. Keep chilled until ready to serve. Truffles can be chilled, covered after 1 hour, up to 2 days. Coat with cocoa powder up to 1 hour before serving. If you're having truffles, you probably don't want chocolate cake and if you're having lemon cake pops, you won't want lemon or other citrus. Carrot cake is good, but a little "heavy" and people either like it or they don't. How about a coconut cake, or maybe red velvet? I don't care much for red velvet, I think it's pretty much just a chocolate cake wannabe and I can't imagine eating that much red dye, but some others love it. If you're not opposed to using liquor, someone here posted this recipe, maybe Stacy? I copied it back in the olden days before I had enough good sense to note where I got it! Actually, almond extract would probably work fine in these if you don't have the Amaretto. Amaretto Dream Cupcakes with Amaretto Butter Frosting 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt- 3/4 cup butter or margarine 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup Amaretto 1/3 cup slivered almonds In a medium bowl; sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Alternately add 1/3 of flour and all of the buttermilk, then 1/3 of flour and the Amaretto, beating well after each addition. Add remaining flour; mix until smooth. Stir in almonds. Line regular or mini muffin cups with baking papers. Fill each 2/3 full. Bake at 375 degrees for 14-16 minutes or until muffins test done. Cool In pans for 5 minutes. Remove and cool completely before frosting. Yield: 24 regular or 48 mini cupcakes. Amaretto Butter Frosting 3 cups confectioners' sugar 1/4 cup butter or margarine; melted 3 to 4 tablespoons whipping cream 2 to 3 tablespoons Amaretto In a small mixing bowl, beat confectioners' sugar and butter. Add whipping cream and Amaretto; beat until smooth. Add remaining cream and Amaretto if needed to achieve spreading consistency. Will you also be serving other food apart from sweets ? I think the fruit is a good idea, although I wouldn't bother dipping it in chocolate (more sweets). I'd also have trays of little moist crustless white bread sandwiches, or those made from a slice of white together with a slice of brown soft bread, again crustless with fillings such as: egg salad & lettuce, pinwheel sandwiches made from cream cheese with an asparagus stick and cut crosswise, stacked and checkerboard sandwiches made from alternate crustless brown and white bread slices filled with patÃ©s and smooth fillings, then cut crossways to make little striped sandwiches, and small glass bowls of pickles and nuts rather than candies. I haven't been to a baby shower for a while (lol) but I'd include other light food besides cake if I were doing it. Here are some ideas from a family buffet we had while on holiday. The food is probably a little too substantial for serving at a baby shower but you might scale down something you see here: - served warm platter. This prepared by a chef friend. I've been pondering the idea of trying my hand at it professionally but I'm not sure. It's so highly competitive and I haven't perfected it to the point where it needs to be. Cakes that go for a premium are perfect and this one has little flaws. I'm pleased with it as a beginner but my technique definitely needs some polishing. :) Not to mention, I'm really slow so I would have to charge about $200 to make any money on it LOL. Maybe when I practice some more and I can be faster at it. But for now, it's a fun hobby!

Thank you, thank you, everyone. Actually, I kind of enjoyed making that cake, the fondant really is like working with Play Dough, if it doesn't come out right you just squish it up and do it again. I absolutely freakin' hate doing those cupcakes, though...

Nancy, Ashley sends hugs back and asked me to remind you and Kim that she loves you both. I still have to make it up your way, life's been so crazy busy...

Eileen, she's still off work, no more bed rest because she's due.....tomorrow! She's made three trips to the hospital where contractions stopped and she was sent home. She's "so over it", LOL. Yeah, I have a lot more pictures, I'll get to it, really, I will.

Deb, I can't believe she's that old either. Or that I am! hey, I used the Magic Mill to make the buttercream for the camo wedding cake for my nephew in September too, plus all the dinner rolls for both baby showers. since I can "make so many" with it, both girls are lobbying for me to make some for them to keep on hand in their freezers, LOL.

June, you noted that her due date is TOMORROW? (grin)

Annie, I'm glad you got Photobucket going again, because you will need it soon. Make sure you've got fresh batteries for your camera, too. I have a feeling there will be lots of photo ops in the coming days.

The cake decorations are fantastic! You certainly did an amazing job.

I've peeked at that fondant baby several times and just 'wow'! Now don't make me go look for other shapes.

Wishing Ashley an easy delivery and recovery. Tell her she will once again be able to sleep on her stomach and be able to tie her shoes!

That's a fabulous cake, Annie! I love the baby. You may not like to make them but the rose cupcakes look great.

frankly that fondant baby creeps me out just a little....

Annie, I absolutely love the little fondant baby! Precious. But, I also agree with Linda a bit...sorta creepy it's so life-like.

I've somehow got to try those cupcakes. They are just beautiful. Gosh, I wish somebody around here would eat them but my group doesn't like cake even for b-days. :(

LindaC, it would have been really creepy if someone wanted to eat it, LOL.

CC, I tinted white fondant so it was "flesh colored", and then I used powdered food coloring to paint the hair.

Jessica, they have those molds in everything from soccer balls to flowers to venetian lace for edging, I'm definitely getting more!

Pam, this baby will earn her nickname, just like the Princess and Bruvver did. We won't know it until we meet her, but it will happen.

Thank you, everyone, I've been here at elery's waiting for the phone to ring, I'm just sure she'll go into labor when I'm 3 hours away and scheduled for a birthday party and a holiday soup and dessert open house for Elery's family.

Annie, it is very easy to make your own molds.

If you see an object that you like, you can cast the mold easy.

Get food grade silicone rubber mold compound (eBay), it come in two parts, mix and cast. Sets in one day and it's done.

You can make candy, bake cakes, make jello (yes, I know you like jello LOL) with the mold.

Here's to you Wonder Woman, you really can do it ALL! That cake and the baby is right out of Anne Geddes and I'm not creeped out in the least!

I love your cake and cupcakes and can appreciate how much effort when into everything, especially the cupcakes.

I think the fondant baby is cute and never thought of it as creepy. It reminded me of the baby Jesus that goes into a ring of bread that is baked around Christmas time in Mexico. Whoever gets the baby Jesus when the bread is served has to host the next party. Anyway, I find nothing creepy about the baby, although I would probably take it off the cake before serving it, sort of like how the bride and groom are taken off the wedding cake. I have to say that you did an excellent job of getting the flesh color correct! I think that is difficult to do.

I'm excited to find out when the baby will actually arrive!

And just for you, Madison arrived by c-section tonight. I'll tell you all about it later, but after a very long day and night, she is fine, so are the parents, and so am I.
