Does anyone here know if the free mailwasher works with a Gmail account?

My stupid server upgraded to a new Email powered by Google Gmail and now mailwasher won't work. (pop.gmail.com)

I am using Outlook Express which mailwasher opened to.

I can get at my mail using Outlook express after I did the required changing but not through Mailwasher now.

I kept getting a popup saying bad username or password.

I fiddled around with the settings in mailwasher to where it doesn't ask that anymore. Now a popup says "The pop server is not responding, ensure that you have specified the address of a pop server.

I came to a place where I have the option to fill in the blanks of user name, password, and check proxy server, and what is port???? What does all that mean? It is under the connection tab.

Do you think if I reinstall it, it will get what it should have and work?

The write up (DIALOG) was EXACTLY me too!

I got lost when it said to click on Gmail. Did they mean my Gmail account that is now my server?

Anyhow, I "pawed" my way through the boxes that showed up on Mailwasher to match what that sight showed and changed accordingly. Then I closed out and reopened Mailwasher and no popups but no mail so I will wait abit to see if my server's mail (OE) shows up for me to check. Those are the only mails that used to show up before.

I hope it works!!!!!!

Thanks. Raven, I always use Mailwasher and weed out bad emails before going to my mail program to read the emails, so there is no chance of opening a malicious email, they are already gone. Mikie, please walk me through this like a kid because I can't figure out where the settings for this are. Thanks!

john4291 You weren't alone as a dBase user, that was the first widely popular relational database for PCs. It was used by a lot of people in a lot of places. Once Microsoft got its database act together, not with the first but with later versions of Access, dBase got pushed aside. You might want to search for the free version of MailWasher. Or the mailwasher pro. It will allow you to just download headers.. who from/subject line, file size , etc. Then you can choose to delete the mails from the server. Or it allows you to preview a specific # of lines of the mail in plain text, should you want. Pretty simple program.. you will have to match your hughes net mail address & port numbers.. but hopefully know how to do that, not to difficult. Maybe they will have predefined the major isp's.

How you get SPAM... To begin with the bad guys send SPAM because that's how they make money, it's their job, it's how they make a living... We're talking millions of dollars here... A lot of spammers are very good at what they do and work extremely hard finding viably e-mail addresses. First off they have programs that search the internet, day and night, 24/7, checking every site and web page for anything that resembles an e-mail address... If you've posted your e-mail anywhere on the internet it's on a SPAM list somewhere... When I say anywhere I mean anywhere, on your own web page, in a Guestbook, on a forum post, MySpace, a blog, anywhere it can be seen it can be grabbed by a spammer. They also have programs that generate names for e-mail addresses, anything that can be found in a dictionary, telephone book, lists of baby names, lists of nick names and such... Anyone who has an internet connection can get a list of all the internet providers in the world... So all they have to do is tell the program to use those names with those providers... Instant SPAM list. Years ago my dial up provider gave their customers FREE web sites... To keep track of all the sites the provider used the customers e-mail addresses as the site names and then posted the list of the sites on the home page... Instant SPAM list.... ( Fortunately they've seen the error of their ways... lol ) Ever sign up for anything FREE on the internet or even registered purchased items and they asked if you wanted to be on their mailing list... Yep, instant SPAM list... Well not all the time but if you don't specify what kind of mail you want from them your address can end up on a SPAM list ( especially the FREE stuff ). Ever get a Forwarded e-mail from a friend with a zillion e-mail addresses in it that tells you to add your name to the list and send it to 10 of your friends... Yep, and if you Forward it, you just created another SPAM list. Ever get mail and you weren't quite sure who it was from or the Subject sounded interesting so you Opened it anyway.. Yep!!! You just added your address to an A #1 golden SPAM list because they know it's a good address and they can sell it to other spammers. Those are a just some of the ways they get your address... So what's the answer... Well, get a new address, pick something no one can guess with lots of letters with numbers mixed in, don't give it out to anyone, create a message rule that sends all your mail to the trash and you MAY stop the SPAM for a week or two... lol Seriously though, never, ever reply to SPAM or click on the links to be removed from their list unless you're absolutely positively sure who sent it... Sometimes reporting them to your internet provider works but after you report the first 100 or so your IP may get a little testy (lol)... Your best bet is to just delete them without opening... Sooner or later they'll slow down... Get a free e-mail account to use for registering for stuff, your internet friends and stuff like that... Only use the e-mail account from your internet provider for family and really close computer savvy friends... BTW, Rules to block e-mail addresses or IP's won't work because they use phony addresses... But, you could make a Rule like this.... Where the from line contains people not in my address book, Delete from Server... But the problem with that is if your friends change their e-mail address before telling you their mail won't get through, same goes for replies from any mail you send out to people not in your address book... I sent me emails and they don't show up on mail washer.

I found instructions at Firetrust.com for MailWasher Pro. Don't know if they will work with the free version or not. Here's what they say:

GMail:

Click Settings > Forwarding and POP > POP Download > Check Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.

Go to: "When messages are accessed with POP" and choose Delete Gmails copy.
Click Save changes.

MailWasher Pro:
1. Click Tools > Email Accounts > Add > select POP3 > click OK.
2. Enter a name reference for your account in the Account name.
3. Enter pop.gmail.com in the POP3 server address field.
4. Enter your full GMail email address in the User Name field.
5. Enter your GMail password in the Password field.
6. Click Advanced Account Options.
7. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Incoming Mail (POP3). The port will change to 995.
8. Click OK.
9. Click OK

Hi Terry,

I did something to cause trouble in receiving my mail in OE so out of desperation, deleted MW not knowing if my fiddeling around in there did it or sending too large a file which I have done B4 the new OE change over to webmail, and never had any problem!
When I settle down, I may install MW again and give it a fresh try.
I also am having trouble receiving OE in Windows Live Hotmail. Am not brave enough yet to do a change in those boxes for the new OE.

I deleted my old mailwasher from the start/all programs.
I downloaded a new one but haven't installed it yet because I read this:
3. Uninstall MailWasher.
Click Windows Start >All Programs > MailWasher Free >Uninstall MailWasher Free
then delete the MailWasher appdata directory C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\MailWasherFree
4. Next delete the MailWasher registry entries
Click > Windows Start >All Programs >Accessories> Command Prompt > and then type in Regedit and press enter on the keyboard.
Then find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FireTrust\MailWasher Free and
Right click on MailWasher Free and left click on Delete and answer Yes to delete

I don't know beans about that and wondered if it has to be done for sure before I install my latest one?????

I REinstalled Mailwasher and as I suspected as I Quoted above,"Do you think if I reinstall it, it will get what it should have and work?THAT did it!
It WORKS now just like it did before! YAY!

I have a question tho:
I seen the newest one that is out there and did NOT like the layout compared to my old one so I reinstalled my old one.
Is there any harm in using old versions from new ones?

most places list the changes in the new versions over the old if you do not see that the changes were done for security related reasons then you are probably ok but if it was done for security reasons then you would want to update so you have the most secure version. Often times the reason a program is updated is because a hole or vulnerability is found that needs patching.
