It was AOL. It was my first mail program. Don't use it anymore so I don't know if it still talks.

If you install yahoo messenger, it will Ding and put a icon on your task bar.. indicating you have new mail. Turn your volume up .. or associate a different sound with it fairly easy.

There are some programs like MailWasher that do that too but painful to configure and test.. takes a while usually.

Yahoo uninstalls simple enough without tons or much left over.

40+ years was the first ever sent Oct. 1971 in fact.

I bought my first computer in 1993. It was an IBM PS/1 with a 486 DX2 66 mhz processor, a 250 MB hard drive and either 1 or 2 MB of memory...I forget. It had Win 3.1 and I went online with AOL at either 2400 or 9600 baud, depending on the phone number I used. It actually did what it was designed to do pretty well.

since we are throwing out trivia here we owned 2 of the, I believe, first "portable" computers, by Osborne the Osborne 1, which came out in 1981! The thing was a suitcase with a tiny screen and bright neon yellow text!
The computer ran on the then-popular CP/M 2.2 operating system. It had a 500 page users guide.

Ah, CP/M and Gary Kildall. Depending on what story you believe, when IBM reps came to talk about using CP/M in their new product (to be called a PC), it was either that he was late, or wouldn't sign an NDA, or didn't like the pricing. So they went north to talk with some young punks in Washington who had a competing solution, called DOS. Not sure what ever became of those kids.

We had some Compaq models along with PCs at work in the early 80s, with I think 286 processors. Screaming fast they were, especially when decked out with RAM drives.

My 1st was in 1993, an Aries B20, looked like a small TV set...great for playing Ping-Pong!

Sometime between 1978 and 1982 I responsible for a hospital laboratory information system and had a kid working for me who had a Commodore PET. He was quite esteemed among peers because he "kept a PET in the bedroom".

Did you know the voice of you've got mail is Elwood Edwards? Yest it still does say that but I don't use the program to hear that anymore. I use incredimail and a buttler comes across the screen and say's you've got mail madam. Makes me feel regal. Mary

I was given an IBM PC in the late 1980's and used a program called DBase 3 plus to develop a prescription drug program which I used for several years while working at a local Mental Health program. I still have it on my old winxp and toy around with it at times. Did anyone use this or other DBase programs?

I still use the You have mail. I like it. I can hear it all over the house when I get mail, since my mail program is open and minimized to the bottom all the time.

I used to have a .wav file of Bugs Bunny announcing that there was mail "for me!" Unfortunately, I think over the years I have lost that file. I suppose if I searched hard enough I could find it and install it in OE again. However, I just go with the little "ding" sound (if I don't have sound turned off).

I found it! The .wav file of Bugs Bunny exclaiming, "What's this? A letter! For ME!" Now to pull out my notes and try to remember how to embed it in my OE to play when new mail comes in.

I think I have the bugs bunny one saved from ages ago, that is a cute one. I don't use the AOL program any more even though it's free. Just didn't want to give up my AOL address I have had for years so use it with a mail program and surf with IE and my high speed connection. Mary

I've used the .wav of Tom Hank's "You've Got Mail" since the movie came out to notify of me of incoming mail for my ISP mail.

You weren't alone as a dBase user, that was the first widely popular relational database for PCs. It was used by a lot of people in a lot of places.

Once Microsoft got its database act together, not with the first but with later versions of Access, dBase got pushed aside. There was no reason to pay for dBase when Access was equivalent and included for in the standard MS Office. Also, Access and Excel files play together well so that's a big plus.

These days SQL seems to be very popular and there are many free community-maintained versions. SQLite is one of several.

I bought my first PC in 1996 I wanted one before, but couldn't justify the cost for just typing, $2,000 back then. I couldn't find word processors anymore. I didn't even go on line for over a year, really, really dumb. I used free Juno for email, later I went on line with it. A couple of weeks ago I found a loud telephone ring, down loaded it because I could hear it all over the house. If I am sitting at my PC and it sounds, I just about jump out of my chair. LOL

My first computer was a Timex Sinclair ZX81.
After that I got a Commodore 64 to use at home
and at school I used an Apple II.

I still have a commodore 64 and peripherals sitting on a closet shelf. Early 80s I think.
I'm getting old, my younger brother while he was a teen taught me the basic's of programming before that commodore came along, there was some other computer I had before that.

I was deprived, never had a 64 but used to drool over it at the store but we didn't have money for stuff like that. Got our first computer the year before we got married. Fancy one, windows 3.1, big old floppy drive, hard disk and dot matrix printer but no internet modem. $3,000 and every one that wasn't as wealthy to get one used to bug us to come over and play monopoly on it. It was really for hubby's work since he is a teacher and he was using pro-write and lotus 123 back then for grades and to type up tests. Before that he was using an electric type write for tests. Mary
