AVG address??

Hi, Does anyone know the correct address for AVG? I've been to several of the sites that pop up and can't figure out which is the real one. I need it desperately. I downloaded Avast, and it wouldn't let me send email, so I had to uninstall it. Now I am getting pop-ups after pop-ups after pop-ups. I can't even read the news, it keeps interfering, the screen won't scroll. Holy Cow, it's a mess!!!
Thank you..........

This is a trusty site for downloads:

Just watch the dialog boxes as they allow others to piggyback on their downloads. You can use this one as well.

ravencajun, I have uninstalled FF and rebooted, two times. It still happens. I found this in my advanced system information, under view the error log. ( The IP address lease then my IP numbers follow for the network card with network address then more numbers has been denied by the DHCP server then my IP address.)The DHCP server sent a DHCPNACK message) Also another one that said- (Your computer has lost the lease to it's IP address then my IP numbers on the network card with network address then more numbers.) Thanks for taking the time to read this.

the new AVG8 is causing lots of people to jump ship over to AVAST free. IT is finding a lot of false positives and as stated it is picking up parts of spybot S&D as infections as well as some other good programs such as spywareblaster. Over on dslreports there are numerous threads about how unhappy people are with AVG8. IT apparently is also on many pcs causing the cpu usage to go up to 100% almost all the time which is not good. Many of the people over there are going to AVAST free for now. Many that did not move to AVG8 yet are staying with the older version of AVG till it's end date. here are a few of the threads from dslreports if you want to see them. AVG8 thread within this one is a link to another one plus this one with a poll AVG8 thread It just looks like they let AVG8 out a bit too early yet for the general population, need to work some of the bugs out still. And they definitely should have made those extras turned off at default and only available if people chose them.

it is not related to firefox that task bar is part of your windows. The Start button then the quick launch buttons etc are not part of firefox. If you right click there near the start button for example and then go to toolbars there you will see the option for address, that one has to be checked for the address bar to appear on the task bar. But if you have installed SP3 on your xp computer then the address bar option is no longer listed, do you have SP3 on your pc? If so that is when you lost your address bar option. This is how most are going about getting it back "Enable any other toolbar on the Task Bar... (i.e. The Quick Launch Bar) then, drag it to the top of the screen (off the taskbar onto desktop). Once the top of the screen has a toolbar, right click it and viola... you now have the ability to choose Address Bar. If you want the Address Bar on the bottom task bar, simply drag its handle to the Taskbar and adjust (and lock toolbars)." another method 1. rightlcick desktop toolbar -> toolbars -> quick launch 2. unlock the toolbar 3. leftclick and hold the quicklanch section and slide it to the rightside of the desktop and allow it to dock there 4. rightclick that rightside docked toolbar -> toolbars -> address 5. Done or "Drag My Computer up to the top of your screen, it creates a bar and from there you can right click and add address bar. Now, right click again and remove My Computer from this bar, now you're left with just address." If you find that when you try to drag the address toolbar back onto the task bar it does not survive a reboot then you will need to leave it docked either at the top of the screen or right above the taskbar on the desktop. there is a freebie app that you can get which will do what you want I think and is much easier than doing hacks or all that dragging. Freeware - Address Bar for XP SP3, Open Last Closed Tab, and More : MuvEnum Software if any of those don't work let me know

Tom, To reassure you that a DUN connection is OK with AVG: I am a rural America resident on an antique DUN with a download speed of 5kb/sec. (Laughing is now allowed) I use AVG on this Vista system and Avast on a Win98 system out in the garage. Updating is not a concern with either application. They are rarely over perhaps 200kb unless I have been negligent as I do them manually. There is a time once in a while when application upgrades are released and the download takes a while; perhaps 15-20 minutes. As far as downloading the application itself, any time I have something of size I do it first thing on a Sunday morning. Even before shower and coffee. By the time the rest of the world is up I am finished. Patience is a virtue. :) DA All in all I have to say no problem.

MWM is correct. CNET appears to be not as well respected as it use to be due to the aforementioned piggybacking. There have even been "claims" of hidden efforts.

Can you give examples of the sort of piggybacking you're referring to?

I don't use cnet often and I don't remember having problems there. However, it comes time to update some of the software I use with Firefox, I do see sneaky attempts to install -- sorry: I don't remember the correct term -- default browser search thingies into Firefox.

I for one recommend to avoid it whenever possible, and instead use majorgeeks.com or filehippo.com.

I will add bleepingcomputer to DA's recommendations of filehippo and majorgeeks as perfectly safe sites from which to download programs.

Sure, there are others but so many agree to allow piggybacking these days it is hard to stay ahead.

I would suggest to everyone that they elect to use the custom install rather than express to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Closely scrutinise every window before clicking 'Next', adding or removing checks marks as needed.

Not an example of piggybacking but in my opinion, kinda tricky too.

{{gwi:1463150}}

That came from cnet but I'm sure it can be found many many other places.

A person looking to download the free version of AVG and having heard that it's called "AVG Free" might very well conclude that they had just found it. In reality the ad is for the trial version.

The download is free though. :)

Agreeing with some of the posts -- be careful downloading from cnet - you may get more than you need or bargained for.

With all downloads read and pay attention to add on's, take the check marks outs before you click NEXT. I always use CNET, have for yrs. and will continue.

A basic Google search using the keywords "cnet download malware" (sans quotes) may be informative.

Any user may of course do or not do whatever they wish.

I too used to trust CNET. However, I got a piggyback app that took over my browser. I forget the name of it, but it was difficult to get rid of. I ended up buying Revo Uninstaller Pro. Even then, it was difficult. CNET - never again.

From the Malwarebytes forum -- "t's also important to note that sometimes CNET will bundle software that they are hosting with other content or encourage you to use their download tool."

ruthann-
The problems you are describing don't sound like they were caused by Avast. I suspect that you may have downloaded what you thought was Avast from a bogus web site which could have infected your computer (or that you had some infection previously). I suggest you download the free version of Malwarebytes and run a scan immediately.

I dont have Avast on any computer here to check, but, I recently worked on one that did. If I remember correctly, it is set by default to scan both incoming and outgoing email. It is possible, that you only had to check the settings.

I used to recommend downloading from cnet all the time, now it is the place, I tell everyone to stay away from. What is good for a while, isnt always good later on. The download sites above, Majorgeeks etc are very good sites to download from right now and hopefully, they will stay that way.

I avoid download sites when I can easily go to the actual site of the software developer...

I too prefer getting whatever it is straight from the developer.

Sadly though, try to grab the "free" version of AVG directly from AVG and you end up sitting on the cnet domain two clicks later.

Am I doing something wrong?

Chuggerguy...I often have that same problem. The home page of many downloads send me to FileHippo, Cnet, Geeks etc. Dunno why...

chuggerguy-
Good point on this one. But at least you know you're starting at the right place if the software developer points you to it.
