I have read all 50 plus of the previous hood height mounting threads but people do not always mention the depth of their hood.

I posted this in the Kitchens forum but got only one response.

I am considering using a thermador PHH36DS (in my possesion, bought on clearance a while back) which is a standard under cabinet type hood with a 600 cfm blower above a 36 inch Gaggenau induction oven. The hood is 24 inches deep, 12 inches high, and 36 inches wide. The front edge is 3.5 inches tall. I was considering 30 inches above the cooktop which would be 66 inches from the ground. Fine for me but my husband is 5'8" (68 inches tall) and it seems like this might be a perfect head banger for him at the 24 inch depth and 66 inches off the ground. Didn't really realize this until I got the 3Ds from the kitchen designer and it sticks out almost to the edge of the counters. I am planning inset cabinets so that the counter edge will only be .75 inches past the edge of this hood.
Also, I read this thread which raised my anxiety about these deep hoods (also linked below) and head-banging at the 30 inch height.

So my specific question for you appliance gurus is this- can I raise this hood to 32 inches over the cooktop? The thermador installation manual says "Typical hood height above the cooktop is 24 to 30 inches". There is no mention of "recommended" or "required.", How much am I compromising the air intake with this slight increase in height? The main gaggenau induction burner that we will be using is in the dead center of the cooktop. The top and lower cabinets will each be pulled out about 2.5 inches along that run so there will be increased depth in the back that will be covered by a stainless plate.

Here's my Rangecraft mounted 29" from my rangetop grates (about 30.25" from counter). It's 24" deep and 42" wide.

It's hard to get a photo in my space that shows how it covered the front burners. The outside edge of the vent just barely covers front burner. I'm 5' 7.5" tall. DH is 6'. The only time I've hit the hood is when I'm wearing my extra tall cooking shoes, which I don't do often, and have my hair piled on my head in a big banana clip. Under these circumstances when I approach the rangetop from the corner of the hood, I sometimes hit my clip on the hood. My clip, not my head. If I approach straight on even in my tallest cooking shoes with big hair clip, I've never hit the hood. I don't recall DH ever hitting his head, nor do I recall anyone else in my kitchen hitting theirs.

I wish the front interior of the hood covered the front burners. As it is now, I cook my smelliest, greasiest, smokiest stuff on the back center burner for better capture. If I try to do that on the front burners, some of the effluent still escapes the front of the hood because the capture part of the hood doesn't completely cover the burner.

I remember reading that thread you linked when I was researching hoods. That was one of very few I read where people complained of hitting their head. From what I've read here over four years, most people don't have an issue with head banging.

thanks Breezy! Your kitchen is one of my favorite on GW!

If 30.25"works for you at 5'7.5 inches then 31" (67 inches from floor) should work for me with my men all being slightly taller than you.

After reading these gazillion threads I have decided that the worst height for a head banger hood is right above eye level, (2-3 inches below height of person) since the forehead juts out. Just an inch below head height and probably the person's hair will touch the hood first , and even that small bit of proprioception should prevent head banging. If the hood is eye level or below (tall people). that also seems to prevent the head banging.

Do you or anyone else know if there could be a problem with passing inspection if I place the hood 31 inches high and the Thermador literature says , "Typical installations are 24-30 inches from the countertop."? The gaggenau cooktop asks for at least 30 inches to the hood surface if it is combustible (this one is not).

Just an opinion - I would not do it bc the counter depth is also greater. While I am not short (5'6"), I have found that the higher/deeper countertops are inconvenient in a bathroom. [Have tried the neighbors'] I would also not do it bc of resale value, which could be a problem. A nice home in our area (willow glen area of San Jose, CA), at the height of the RE boom several years ago, had 36" high sinks and countertops in their baths and it looked wierd and took forever to sell. It also sold for well below asking price. Of course this is anectdotal and not necessarily related to the coutertop height in the baths! That said, the kitchen countertops were higher than 36" - since both spouses were well over 6' tall. So that home was really a white elephant. While we have no intention of ever selling our home, we have been conservative in all remodeling work - true to the architecture; neutral tones; and no cutsey stuff anywhere. At least that way, the syle is universal and if we needed to sell for some unforseen reason, things would not need done over to make it sale-able. Thanks for your input, everyone. The upper cabinet doors open fine. But the upper cabinet at the corner directly beside the hood opens into the blind corner, so I think the deeper hood will probably make it even more difficult to make use of the shelf space in that corner. (Sorry, I know its hard to visualize and I apologize for not having a picture to post.) Anyways, I think I've decided to keep the existing 27" hood. I'm not convinced that the 24" is going to look significantly different and we will have given up some level of functionality. Plus, we avoid the headache of dealing with an unwanted rangehood. (edlakin -- I know that I might have been able to get the appliance dealer to take back the 27" hood but, unfortunately, they removed and took away the packing on delivery. So, if he took it back, it would have been difficult to convince the distributor to take it back and he would likely have had to put the brand new hood in the store's "clearance" area. His first comment to me was, "it HAD to be the rangehood...anything BUT the rangehood". I got a fantastic price on our suite of appliances and it certainly was not the retailer's fault that we were thinking about going to a different size. Actually, I don't fault anyone for not identifying the issue earlier, since we certainly did talk about rangehoods earlier -- I just chalk it up to one of those situations where, on paper, everything looked okay but you can only appreciate the real impact when you see the actual kitchen put together. I thought the retailer offered a very reasonable solution and, for me, the financial hit we would be asked to take -- which he estimated would be maybe $300 at the end of the day -- would be the price for making sure that our kitchen was the way we wanted it, if that's the route we wanted to go.)

Wolf recommends the 27" if you are doing grilling or other smoky operations. With a 60" grange I would assume you will be getting both a griddle and a grill, so I think I would go with a 27" hood. The design of the Wolf hoods is such that the front does not have any sharp edges, it's just a nice rounded look. We are installing the Wolf Pro Island hood, which is 34" deep. It will be centered over 26" deep cabinets with a 36" Wolf rangetop mounted with a 2" space at the rear. This means the front of the hood will be 4" out from the front face of the cabinets and pretty much in line with the actual front of the rangetop knobs, which stick out past the cabinet fronts quite a bit. It's going to be 32" above the counter, which is way over my wife's head... but not mine :-) I think this will work fine as the bottom of the hood will be in my line of sight. Our local dealer had a rangetop mounted with a 27" wall hood and it seemed fine... I could stand in front and not think I was going to bump my head. That hood was only about 31" above the counter. With a 66" wall hood I hope you are going with a large blower, ideally the 1500 cfm remote would work best. That's what we are using with our island hood. Regarding Wolf hoods being manufactured by Independent... that is true for some hoods. I asked Independent about this and they confirmed. My local salesman did say that Wolf now manufactures their Pro line of hoods though. Don't know if that's true, but they look quite good and the attention to detail is very high, with all welded seams and a very uniform finish. I like the infinite speed adjustment also compared to just 3-speed for Independent. For the island hood the Indpendent and the Wolf were within $100 of each other in price. I went with the Wolf for its ease of mounting in an island configuration and also the much better warranty, local vendor, and much quicker delivery.

The range hood aperture should overlap the rising and expanding cooking plume for good capture. The air flow rate should be sufficient to ensure containment of the plume captured in the aperture such that it doesn't "reflect" out into the room, but is instead ejected into the outside environment. The range hood should also be affordable and aesthetically pleasing, fit into the available space, provide a fire block, be reasonably quiet, and support cooktop illumination. Most of the time for most of the people looking for a hood, not all of these "shoulds" are simultaneously able to be met. I can only advise on performance "should's"; the affordability and aesthetics "shoulds" have to be weighted by the buyer within his own trade-space versus grease and odor removal. Ideally, then, for the hood aperture to overlap the pans on the front burners by at least ten degrees at the height chosen for the base of the hood, the depth has to be roughly 27 inches front-to-back, although 24 inches may be satisfactory for most, and in a wide range of candidate hood styles, the largest depth available. Arguably, 24 inches as a wall mount is likely as effective as 27 inches in a peninsula/island mount. It is important to keep in mind that good containment air flow is nominally 90 CFM per square foot of aperture, so larger hoods need more air flow, and what goes out has to be replaced, so higher make-up air capacity is also required. So size is a cost driver. As to why many hoods do not meet the ideals of sufficient depth for good performance -- this is determined by market forces. Even if everyone who wanted a hood came to this forum and studied all the commentary, treating it as canonical truth, many would have to choose a lower performance hood design for cost reasons, or due to other factors.
