Bathroom Vanity Wall Sconces

For those of you who have wall sconces over your vanity...how high off the floor are they? What is considered a normal or optimum height?

Depends on the mirror you are placing.
Usually the mirror is 42" H. How tall are your cabinets? are you placing the mirror directly above the backsplash?

I like to place the wall sconces 6" above the mirror (to the bottom of the sconce not to the center)

I was thinking of a framed mirror above the sink (in the center of the vanity), with a sconce on each side of the mirror. Mirror about 24w x 36h. Top of mirror about 6ft high. Does that sound right?

I have seen this and it doesnt cause any more glare than a fixture mounted to the side or one that extends over the mirror from the top. Any part of the fixture that faces the mirror (excluding that part butted right against the glass) has to be decent looking because you will see its reflection in the mirror.

I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. If I had been willing to go with a painted finish, I think we might have stuck with the 72" Modero.

If you do 4 sconces, 2 for each mirror, it will make each mirror seem its own entity, IMHO. If you do a double sconce in the middle, it seems like.....an after thought? And the sconces will not be equidistant from each other and the mirror. My OCD kicking in, I suppose. If the space between is larger than the mirrors, I think you should go with 2 separate sconces. If the space is smaller than the mirrors, I think you could go with a double light. Just make sure the spaces are fairly equidistant.

We are fairly tall 5'10" looks like around 70" (which is middle of light fixture) seems to be a bit above eye level but not "in your face" or a hindrance. Unfortunately we don't have much room on either side of mirror at hubby's vanity they will only be about 1" to the side side of the mirror.

I think the recommended height is 5.5 feet. That's where we placed ours and they are just perfect for us.

Be sure you have sconces that take large-enough wattage. DH and I each have a pair at our mirrors; each takes max of 60W. They are sufficient, but in hindsight the ability to go to 100W would have been smarter. Ours are up-lights, frosted, on dimmers. YMMV!

chisue, if you want a crisper, brighter light you may want to try the GE Halogena 60w bulbs. They give off lots of bright, clean light. They are not as energy efficient as a CFL, but more efficient than a regular incandescent. I just picked some up from HD yesterday and I believe they were $5.49 for the package of 2.

Thanks, all - very helpful. I had just sort of measured for myself to see what was comfortable, and came up with 66", but builder was questioning it. (maybe 'cuz I'm just a girl...)

brutuses -- Can you dim these? I love the 'glow' when our sconces are on dim. I haven't gone to CFLs, waiting to see some that can be dimmed...also unhappy about the mercury problem they present. Yeah, I'm a hanger-backer about new and improved anything. (I really need to replace the Flex-Seal pressure cooker, though. LOL)

Yes, you can dim them and forgive me, they are Phillips, not GE.
