Take a Seat at the Vanity
Get Ready for Your Day at One of These Dressing Tables
Vanity is a broad term: It could mean anything from the cabinet that holds your sink to (yikes) being vain in character. Here, let's refer to it as a dressing table, which I hope you will agree is closer to the former rather than the latter. While to some a designated area made especially for grooming oneself might seem trite, to me it recalls an era when people took a little extra pride and time in the care with which they presented themselves — not to be vain, but rather to show a certain amount of respect for themselves and those around them. If that's not a good enough case for reintroducing vanities into the home, perhaps these beautiful arrangements will sway you.
There's something so glamorous about mirrored furniture — it calls to mind a time where getting ready truly was an art form.
Natural light is extremely helpful for makeup application. A gold-tinged throne positioned front and center takes full advantage of all the sun pouring into this airy bathroom.
Maybe there's a spot in the bedroom that's better positioned by a window. Squeeze in a desk, hang a mirror above it, and voila! Instant vanity.
Warm-toned walls are flattering for your complexion, while a mix of recessed bulbs, sconces, and desktop lamps provide plenty ways to ensure you get the lighting just right.
On the opposite end of the style spectrum, this vanity area, located in the home's walk-in closet, is sleek and modern.
The space in between a double vanity is a smart spot for your chair. Here all toiletries are close at hand, and for mornings when you're particularly tired, you can take a seat while you brush your teeth!
The chrome base of this stool ties in with the hardware and fixtures throughout the bathroom.
The sink area can work as a vanity station too, as long as there is plenty of room on either side for your accouterments and space underneath to house a seat when not in use.
You could also float a chair out in your bathroom to hold clothes and towels, then pull it up to the sink, as shown here, when you're getting ready.
Factor in plenty of storage space to keep the vanity from instantly becoming cluttered. A magnifying mirror mounted on the wall takes up less counter space as well.
A skirted vanity stool is a staple of the makeup table. Covered in gray toile and accented with coral-y orange, it's classic and sweet without looking saccharine.
For a more minimal approach, skip the skirted stool and opt for a low–back streamlined chair instead.
