computer won't shut down

Help.. when I go to shut down my computer it gets to the screen that says "windows is shutting down" then doesn't do it. Does anyone have an idea what is happening and how I can correct it? Computer is a 200 Gig Compac presario desk top. Came with Norton security suite installed. If you need more info hopefully I can provide it. Thanks for any suggestions

It just started doing this the last three times I've tried to shut down or reboot.

this might not be your problem, but check it out. several times mine has done that and in my system, after I click shut down, another screen will appear to allow me to change my mind if I want to. Somehow or other, the automatic instruction of "shut down" has moved over to "reboot" and that's what it keeps doing...rebooting instead of shutting down.

You can use the System Restore tool to return your computer to a previous working state.

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
or
Start/Run/type> %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Doesn't this model have a bail on the handlebars that you must hold while mowing? It should. And releasing it should kill the engine. If it doesn't, you should have someone look at the kill switch or maybe a wire pulled off at the coil.

Please do the steps below that will enable you to read the EXACT blue screen error next time the pc blue screens, post the error here, a blue screen error can be related to many things this will only be the start of finding the exact cause. 1.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2.Click the Advanced tab. 3.Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box. 4.Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times. 5.Restart your computer for the settings to take effect. Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. then we can sort out what's causing the problem.

I have some of my towers under the desk on small pedestals and some on top of the desk, I have a ceiling fan in the room that usually is on except in the dead of winter and under the desk I have a small fan that runs circulating air around those towers at all times, it can get warm under that desk and the fan does help keep air moving. My husband uses his laptop all day long at work, he puts it in the docking station when he gets there in the morning and it stays there and on and running till he comes home at night unless he has a meeting to take it to, but it gets good air flow being on the desk and in the docking station. I think if a laptop caught fire like that it had a serious over heating problem, if it did not have it's vents blocked. I know a lot of bad batteries in laptops have caused fires. they do make laptop bases that have additional fans built in them to help keep them cool.

thanks, I know about the power button, but was trying to avoid that. I wanted to shut down some windows before hitting the power button. My husband was trying to back up some pics and plugged in a Maxtor One-Touch and it killed the mouse, (wireless). In an attempt to shut down Adobe Photoshop, he was using arrows and enter keys and had so many things open, and couldn't close them. By the time I got to the computer, he had IE, Firefox and AOL all running, Task Manager, My Computer, Adobe Photoshop, msconfig, etc,etc. I couldn't shut any of them down except to Power Off. I was hoping there was a way to shut down processes with the keyboard. I was worried about his pictures. But I had to hit the power button anyway. What a mess and now the mouse is dead. Sounds like something is getting corrupt. The 1st thing to do is to click start - then run, type in msconfig. Go to the tab that says startup. Usually the 1st few entries you shouldn't need to touch. Look for things like
realsched
qttask
itunes
WksSb
WkUFind
msmsgs
msnmsgr
Nero
jusched
adobe....
microsoft office
microsoft works
microsoft fast find
office startup

once you uncheck them click on apply, then ok. It will ask to restart, click ok.

See if it will shut down. You can try restarting one more time for the changes to take effect. Post back.

I had the same problem at one time. Got a bunch of knowledge base things that were no help. I then went through a long drawn-out troubleshooting proceedure by removing one item at a time from the start list and rechecking the shut down. As I recall, it was one of the NORTON programs in the systems works. Very frustrating.

In xp, I would look in the Computer Management window, at the Event Errors. Possibly it will show what program Hangs. And maybe offer a solution too, if you follow the link(s).
