suggestions for kid bath floor etc etc?HELP!!

I would like to re-do the upstairs hall bathroom (aka kids bathroom). I would like to do it nicely, but recognize that it is a kids bathroom (the house has a very nice master suite with a very nice master bath that I also want to update).

I would like it to look nice and updated and gender neutral. I have been browsing about, looking for nice and very inexpensive tiles and the like. In that regard, subway tiles ( I am talking the 22 cent variety or thereabouts at HD and Lowes ) seem to be a good candidate for the tub/shower walls etc.

I thought about the octagon and dot for the floor( which I do like a lot, but I think it would show dirt/hair too much? and the many grout lines?)... so I am asking for suggestions for flooring.

I'd like to have the tub/toilet etc be white.

And of course, resale is very much on the horizon in the next 2-to 5 years).

The house is about 20 years old; we are the original owners, and it's served us well. I think after 20 years, most things need refreshing/redoing so I am fine with that but will be doing it differently than if I thought we would be here another 10 years.

I am doing the octagon and dot tile with gray grout for my kids bathroom. I think by making the grout darker it will be excellent for kids.

Wow - I remember when I was getting started researching what I needed to buy for my bathroom and being completely confused and overwhelmed! But by the end, I showed up at the plumbing supply store with a list that was surprisingly complete. :-) My situation was slightly different from yours in that I have a combined shower/tub. But I do have two showerheads - a fixed (not rain head) and a handheld on a slidebar. The shower controls can get complicated - you need to control temperature, volume of water, and which showerhead the water comes out of. Depending on the brand, these might be separate controls or one integrated control. I went with Hansgrohe which gave me a single integrated control - fewer knobs on the wall, and I think lower plumbing costs. This is what my list looked like: Toilet (includes flush lever, but might not include seat!) Tub Wall-mount sink (for me - for you, you'll need a vanity, a sink, and possibly a countertop for the vanity if it doesn't include one) P-trap (the pipe under the sink - mine was exposed so I bought a pretty one - if yours is hidden inside the vanity, your contractor will probably supply it, but check) Sink faucet (usually includes drain & thingy to operate drain) Thermostatic valve rough-in (this is the part that goes in the wall - I got a thermostatic one which lets me set the water temperature once and then always keeps the water at that temperature - it's my favorite part of the new bathroom!) Thermostatic valve trim (this is the pretty control that you see - it has to match the rough-in) Fixed showerhead Shower arm (for fixed showerhead) Hand shower Slide bar Hose for hand shower (might be included with slide bar) Wall union (this connects the hose to the wall) Tub spout Tub drain Since you have a separate tub and shower, your list will be a little different (for example, you'll also need temperature and volume control for the tub), but I hope this helps get you started.

Sorry here is the vanity and top. - hard to see, but the top is one solid piece, and it has white and cream colors blended together. my wall color is going to be a soft grey, and the floor will be a grey/ tan / cream combo. we are un decided yet if we are going to use a tub surround, or if we will have it tiled - which looks best? Which is easier to keep clean? have not yet decided on faucets, the tub needs to have it own special faucet ( exclusive to the tub). so that is taken care off already. thank you if you can provide any help. Ya, here is the dilleo. We met and talked for probably 3hrs. He has budgetted amounts for each item of the house build. i.e. excavation, cement, framing, kitchen fixtures, and basement (to my suprise) was an extra price. All good though. He is a great guy , i get the feeling. Won't know of course til were all done. I have gone and talked to people he built for and they all say what a great guy he is. I am leaving most if not all decisions about kitchen and bath fixtures to my sig other. She already has it in mind that she wants a walk in shouwer for our master bath. Said "were getting older ." She is , im not. But, ya, lots of decisions. He said as far as counter tops go , you could do 5 laminate tops for the price of a quartz or anything else. So, i guess , the laminate is the better choice. Yes, we are on a very tight budget. Home is only 1200 sq ft. Im bringing est. to the bank and letting loan officier there look at the prices. She deals with this all the time. Hopefully. We'll have composit flooring in kitchen and hallway. Carpet in bedrooms and sometype of waterproof flooring in bathrooms. Here's a question for the group : Country setting so, lp gas. Question: Woodstove down the basement, or heatmore outside ?? Love the idea of a woodstove downstairs in the den for those cold winter nights. Heats the whole house. And just a cozy feeling. Buddy has a heatmore. He loads that up and it brings hot water through a radiator in his furnace and heats his house and......... hot water What say ye all ???

This is a lot of information without seeing a floorplan or photos. The Kohler Underscore tub is a good one; I just put in a tub/shower in a client's guest bath using that model with a glass slider door. If there's room for a separate shower, you could do a configuration in which the undermount tub deck extends into the adjacent shower to form a bench. Like this: Or this: As for the heating, check with your contractor to find out how difficult it would be to move the ducting to the floor or the adjacent wall near the floor. I'm betting it's not that difficult or expensive. As for 72" vanities, those are going to be pretty expensive no matter how you slice it. Take a look at Pottery Barn and/or Waterworks.

I also wanted the octogon and dot pattern for my son's bath. But in the end decided against it. To me it looks dirty no matter what. It's just a matter fo personal preference. I will most likely use the AO coleseum white tile-haven't priced it out yet, but Ithink it's reasonale. I've had a porcelin tile that mimics slate in a bath and that thing never showed dirt.

I'd go with a larger tile on the floor. Choose a porcelain that has a stone-like look to it. That will be neutral enough to decorate around and look good for resale.

We recently installed $2.99/sq. ft. natural walnut travertine tiles from Home Depot in several areas of our home, including a jack-and-jill bath for our girls.

It is a large scale tile (I think 16x16 or 18x18) and we laid it in a simple brick, or running bond, pattern.

So far, we couldn't be happier. Almost nothing shows on it, it has cleaned up great, the natural color variation is beautiful and it looks very rich.

We used a fairly dark grout and 1/8th inch spacing. For paint, we used Duron's Tobacco Road formula mixed at Sherwin Williams and I bought pre-fab granite countertops at an auction for $75 each (we have one 48" vanity and one 42"). Creamy white trim mouldings and cabinets, fluffy white towels and chrome fixtures for a little sparkle...it's really nice!

We just did ours with 12 x 12 gray colorbody porcelain with gray grout (Daltile). Dirt doesn't show, scratches won't show, it goes with everything. We laid it on a diagonal, but in the end I don't think that matters too much. We paired it with white penny round in the tub area, but I'm sure it would look great with subway as well. Gray and white - you can match any color with that to make it more genderiffic if you like - pink, red, blue, etc.
