Question about Monitor

I have a fairly new monitor which I am very pleased with. A couple of weeks ago, all of a sudden it started "closing" the screen if I did not do anything for a bit over 60 seconds (have timed it). What I mean by closes is that the screen goes dark, it does not shut down. This is very annoying, especially if I am reading a document or messages on this board. I am wondering if one of the updates caused this. I have checked the power display settings and everything else I can think of and none of them have changed. Any ideas?

Are you sure this is not the computer going into snooze mode? If you fail to move the mouse for a given (user definable) amount of time the computer snoozes to conserve energy.

Note the coloured LED on or around the power button on the monitor. Now does it change colour when the screen goes dark? This indicates snoozing but if there is no change then it might be something different.

Make and model? Windows version?

do you have your screen saver set to none and have it set on a short time period if so it will cause the monitor to go black, try changing your screen saver to a different one that shows something on it so you can tell if it is indeed going to sleep or if it is the screen saver becoming active.

OK, Zep. You've got the banana care nailed! A couple of ornamental (you don't want to eat the fruit, because it's full of seeds) varieties can survive in cold areas, like here in NY, with that kind of care. Edible varieies, around here, have to come inside for the winter. Now to the subject at hand: I got nowhere with the Creative link. I just got an error, HTTP 404 Not Found. When I clicked on, "Publisher: Creative", I got to a place where there were so many of these things that I didn't know which one was the right one. At the Gateway link, they asked for the serial number. (0016653113) When I gave them that, and clicked on a few other things that they told me to do, I got this instruction: "Insert System Restoration Kit Drivers CD in the System Restoration Kit Window." I found the System Restoration CD, and I guess there's really only one place I can insert it. On the disc itself, it says to reinstall some old Windows operating systems, start the PC with the disc inserted, and to install system software and drivers, insert the disc while the PC is on. So, I guess I start up the PC, and put the disc in. If I remember correctly, from the few times I have used any restorations, long ago, you restore to a certain date. A date, when I still had sound, was before I took the 'puter in for service. If I restore to a date like that, while restoring my sound, am I not also restoring the problems that prompted me to take the machine in for service, in the first place?

Ten years is a good age really for a monitor. Having to continually lighten then darked can get old very quickly. Might be the time to study your Black Friday flyers for a dazzling new flat screen monitor.

At my shop, there is one walk-in door and two big garage doors. One of the doors is 20 wide and 14 high. When the deadbolt is locked on the walk-in, the bolt pushes a switch that shuts off the "raise" buttons for the garage doors.

Question: Television vs. Monitor?

The main difference (originally) between "television" and "monitor" is a television has a built-in tuner to select broadcast and/or cable channels from a coaxial cable, and a monitor does not. A monitor simply accepts a video signal (composite, S-video, component) and displays it. Channel selection must be done via an external device such as a satellite tuner or a VCR. My 4-year-old Panasonic plasma panel would be considered a monitor. It does not have a coaxial input or a tuner. I selected channels (when I had cable) by using my VCR as a tuner. However, nowadays most all consumer-level display devices / televisions / monitors DO have a built-in tuner, so "television" vs. "monitor" may simply be a marketing term. Just make sure whatever units you are considering have a built-in tuner and can take whatever kind of wire or cable connection you have, and make your choice on which one fits your budget, has the features you want, best picture quality, etc.

I can set mine to do that. It's a power saving feature.
Start>>Control Panel>>Power Options.
You can set it for how long you want, or set it to never.
I put a shortcut on the desktop to make it shut off.

You would think I would have learned to include all of the vital info by now; I do apologize for not providing that. Raven was correct. The secreensaver is set to "blank." Director below that is "Wait" with a box with an up and down arrow to set the minutes; it was set at 1 minute. I changed that to 15 minutes, so the screen is not blanking out not.

As usual, you all are just great.

Excellent! I use Avast and so I set my screen saver to the Avast scan so that any time it is inactive it starts scanning, stops when you move the mouse, starts where it left off the next time.
