AVG question

My tech installed it for me and uses it himself,as do a lot of people I know. I had Norton which made my puter run slow on start up.So it went bye bye. Now Im wondering how good a free product could be and if I should install something I buy and if so what are good ones besides Norton???THanks!

I said bye bye to Norton myself and DL'd AVG as I had been using that on my old windows 98 computer and seemed to suffice.
My only question is, is that it updates EVERY day and I was wondering if it does for other users like that and if I am going to run out of drive space? (smiles)

If you were to go to free.grisoft.com and look at the page that compares free versus the paid version you'll see mainly that the paid version offers additional protection for spyware, maybe popups, and rootkits.

There's other programs that offer spyware protection and rootkit searches available for free.

no they dont accumulate, they replace old with new files.

this may be of help How to disable the AVG add-on in my Internet Browser? AVG 8.0 Free Edition contains a plugin for scanning of search results in Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines. This plugin (AVG SafeSearch) is designed for MS Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox Internet browsers. If you would like to disable it kindly proceed as follows: 1. OK, I understand and it makes sense. Sometimes, on these forums its easy to forget that its not just forum members and GW that can read posts. I'll try the other ways suggested. Thanks for all your time and the explanations. I've done some googling and I'm not seeing what would be expected from Zlob. No popups, nor sites that pop up telling me I've been infected and click here to remove. and I haven't been to any porn sites, unless you'd call searching for California King bedding on legitimate sites porn. What I am seeing is cursor not responding properly, and sometimes getting a strange mssg. on AVG antispy saying "connect to server" when I'm already connected and trying to run a search. Still under warranty but Best Buy Geek said it would take 7-10 days to diagnose. Yikes! Think I'll buy a new mouse in hopes that will help. I'm a Bills fan, so used to hoping for miracles. I've also noticed there are a lot of updates recently at AVG antispyware. Took it to mean they're really keeping on top of things. Sandy

I have used AVG for years without issue. The updates aren't big enough to cause any type of space issues. I think I would prefer to use AVG than Norton and we won't even discuss that MacAffee fiasco.

If you wanted to treat yourself for a few bucks, upgrade to the Professional Version of AVG.
Like Mikie said, a few extras that can be found in other programs for free

I take it you mean the "pay" version?
If a person does pay, is it a one time only, or do you have to renew every year for $$ like those other *&^%---- $$ ones on the market?

Does the paid version run the scanner faster???
My free version takes 1 1/2 hrs for a scan.

Nope. Scan time seems the same free vs paid.
Maybe clear your internet cache. That sucker can take time to scan.

I try to remember to turn on virus scan when I know I'm going to be not here, or sometimes I'll just let it run in the background and forget about it as it takes its merry time. (thats the nice thing about dual processors)

Like Mikie, I schedule the scan for a time when I won't be using the computer...like midnight.

By default the AVG is set to scan at 8 a.m. To change the time open AVG, click the Test centre button, then click the Scheduler button. Remember to set the search for updates to happen before the scan starts so you are fully up to date before the scan happens.
