Adobe Reader 8.1.4 - should I update?

With this conficker worm/virus set to hit, I'm watching for updates. I ran secunia - which said I only needed to update thunderbird.

But I'm getting a pop-up on my taskbar which says I should update by adobe reader to 8.1.4 (I currently have 8). Should I make this update? I'm wary of following the links to the update site - in case this is bogus. Can someone give me the link if I should, in fact, update adobe.

I updated my desktop secunia 2 days ago - am I right in thinking that the secunia scan didn't turn up the adove 8.1.4. because the 8.1.4 was created after I updated secunia on Sunday?

Most people I know, and I do personally recommend it to users, abandon AR and install the free Fox It Reader. AR has beome very bloated and deeply configured into the O/S. AR is historically difficult to remove so I also recommend users download REVO Uninstaller for this task. I've done it on several systems without concern.

If you are not sure if you do ant to use FIR you can download and install while retaining AR. This allows you to compare the applications. They do not conflict. You will have to set one as the default application for pdf files.

it is a very new update and yes it is a security update so I would do the update, you should be able to just open your adobe and hit update.

You can definitely get foxit if you prefer it is a good program, it has had some security updates lately also because the same holes were found in both applications. However it has recently gone in the hall of shame for trying to get you to install un needed and un wanted toolbars and other things so be careful, if you search here I posted a thread about what to watch for, I think it had foxit in the title so search for that.

zep516, Thanks. I point out for those reading that I did update the subject Acrobat Reader, and my question was driven by the surprise that Acrobat is supporting both a 7.x and an 8.x version. Going to Acrobat's update site with 7.X installed resulted in an update to 7.X+, not an update to 8.X. Seems there must be some reason, maybe 7.X will run in Windows 2K and 8.X will not. I am running XP on both target machines. I also went to Acrobat's update site on a machine with 8.X installed, and it too got an update, to 8.X+ in this case.

As someone said earilier on this Forum. To Exit a Website hold down on the CTRL Key and press F4 To Exit the Internet hold down on the Alt Key and press F4 That doesn't really fix your problem.

Thanks Mikie, again! It is the same one I tried to install. It has their toolbar. Its almost impossible to get rid of it once installed. They have made it mandatory to take their seach toolbar with the free ZA. Probably even throw it in with the paid version. Last year you could install by clicking 'skip all offers' but even clicking it installs the search toolbar. I'm running Win XP and need a firewall. Jane

Thanks for the responses and help. I am not using antivirus and removed the the antivirus before my Adobe problems. I checked/installed updates to Windows and IE. I went to Adobe.com and installed/reinstalled. This morning the issues seem partly fixed. When I am on a web page, such as Yahoo, whether in IE or FF, some of the boxes display and some don't. If I go to a web page page, like Yahoo's tech page, that has mostly boxes that have videos in them, I see the text in the boxes but they are otherwise blank. If I click on the box a video then starts playing. I know this isn't how it's supposed to work, but it's better than it was yesterday. Maybe if I wait till the next Adobe or Windows update it will sort itself out? Thanks for the suggestions. If you think of anything please let me know. I think I will put this laptop away for a week or two and use my Win7 laptop instead. I'll check on updates the next time I get it out and hope for the best.

The FIR security concerns were addressed earlier this month (March).

The inclusion of "add-ons" and toolbars are not my favorite thing but it is becoming more and more prevalent. When applications are free the bills have to be paid somehow. The true concern is if and how easily they can be ignored, cancelled, removed and what application features may be lost if they are aborted.

Thanks, everyone. I did go ahead and update my Adobe Reader for now. I may want to look into foxit reader at some point, but for right now, I just want to protect myself against any April 1 worms.

From what I am reading at noon EDT here in the USA the worm has so far been more bluster than anything else. Credit is being given to users for their awareness, and proactive approach using the established resources provided to them ahead of time. Hopefully this will continue now and in the future.
